When we analyze about the uniqueness of this convention, the major points are the maximum number of participants in our general bodies, blending of technologies like Videowall (idea put forwarded by Dr. S. Pramod) which avoided intermittent time lag between programme and gave a high professional touch to the stage &programme and timely arrival of all dignitaries , Artists and other invitees. Wide media coverage was an outstanding achievement. Delicious food and superb Event management by arranging programme one by one without any confusions were striking. Package of colourful Art Exhibition and marvellous

entertainment programme hiked the score. All these could be materialized by the proper guidance and support from State level leaders and seniors, team work of the organizing committee members – Vets of Kannur – and may be the blessings of the soul of Dr. K. Bootsy, a 9-y old female spayed Domestic short hair cat was presented with the complaint of losing body

weight over the past 3 m. She was showing restlessness, polydipsia and polyuria as well. Owner informed that she was on a good quality commercial cat food (both dry and wet). The appetite was very good. There was occasional vomiting and diarrhoea. No significant finding on a detailed physical examination other than thin body condition and tachycardia. A general panel blood work including hematology and serum biochemistry came back normal. Fecal examination was negative for ova and parasites. From among the following conditions, what is the most likely diagnosis.

1. Diabetes mellitus (DM)2. Chronic kidney disease (CKD) 3. Hyperthyroidism

4. Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)Answer is 3. In DM, there will be hyperglycemia. In CKD, blood urea

nitrogen and serum creatinine levels will be high. In IBD in cats, hyperglobulinemia is usually noted.

Hyperthyroidism is most common in middle aged to older cats. The diagnosis is based on the clinical symptoms and confirmation by finding increased serum total T4 concentration. If serum total T4 concentration is in the grey zone (high normal), estimation of serum free T4 level is recommended for confirmation. The symptoms of hyperthyroidism are slowly progressing and often include weight loss, PU/PD, polyphagia, restlessness, vomiting and diarrhoea. On PE, the affected cats usually appear thin, may have thyroid enlargement, tachycardia, cardiac murmur or gallop rhythm. Methimazole (Felimazole) is the main medical treatment for hypothyroidism. The medication has to be administered for the remainder of the cat’s life with periodic blood work to monitor the possible side effects. Thyroidectomy and radioisotope treatment can also be undertaken. Prognosis is usually good with medical treatment in uncomplicated cases. Many cats with hyperthyroidism may also have concurrent kidney disease and heart problems.
