also wants to start a discussion aboutclimate refugees. Greens want themincluded as an official refugee category. They too want to get rid of the SafeThird Country agreement.JobsLiberal

Liberals are heading into theelection feeling pretty happy about jobgains — Canada’s unemployment ratedropped to 5.4 per cent in May thisyear, its lowest number sincecomparable data was first collected in1976. It’s since edged up slightly to 5.7per cent. The party also has beenmulling a guaranteed minimum income, but has not detailed further plans.Conservative

The party has railed againstmany Liberal policies, claiming theythreaten jobs. Leader Andrew Scheerhas been a fierce advocate forstruggling oil workers. Conservativeshave promised to end foreign oilimports and get pipelines built, including the Trans Mountain, whichthey claim will create “tens ofthousands” of jobs. It also wants toimprove “credential recognition” tomake it easier for immigrants to getjobs, if they have equivalent skills.New Democrat

New Democrats proposeraising the federal minimum wage to$15 an hour. Their platform pledges tocreate 300,000 new jobs in the NDP’sfirst term. The party also wants to ban

unpaid internships if they don’t countfor school credit. It would requireemployers spend one per cent of theirpayroll on annual employee training.Green

The party wants to raise thefederal minimum wage to $15 an hourand ban unpaid internships, excludingthose for school credits. At the federallevel, it would like to study raising theminimum amounts for vacation andlook at implementing a shorter workweek. It also wants to cancel theTemporary Foreign Worker programand implement a guaranteed liveableincome.

There are still more than threeweeks to October 21. We encourageeveryone to continue reading thediscussions about the issues that aregoing to affect their decision inselecting the right people to lead thegovernment but according to mostexperts, it boils down to a question - willyou let the Liberals continue what theyhave began for another four years, ordo you want to change to try a newleader whose vision of Canada has notyet been tested? Is change reallynecessary at this point?

The poll shows that the Liberalsand the Conservatives are neck andneck. In spite of the scandals whichwere in the news lately, the Liberals arestarting to have an edge over theConservatives. Will this trend continueuntil election day?

The current Federal electionsmay be one of the most important in ourCanadian history as there are manyimportant issues at stake. Voters mustnot be easily swayed by scandalswithout reflecting further on theirimplications or how they have impacteda leader’s record in serving the country. The recent “Black Face” and “BrownFace” photos that came to light justserved to remind voters that they aredistractions and should not destroy aperson’s record of service. We need toweigh all the reasons why we have topostpone judgement and give JustinTrudeau another chance to show hishonesty and sincerity in doing what isgood for the country. One writer notesthat he has fulfilled 92% of the promiseshe made and perhaps, he will also fullfillthe ones he is making during theseelections. For the good of the country,we hope and hold him to account at theend of another term if he wins thiselection.

Party platforms should be wellexplained to enable voters to selectwhich one will be more beneficial, relevant to one’s goals of living a betterlife, and provide an economic stabilityand continuous progress. Some of theplatforms are too vague and do notdetail how they would be realized orimplemented. A diligent voter mustthen resort to reading the numerousopinions and analyses by journalists, pollsters, before they can select whichones offer the best platforms supportedby facts and figures..

For most immigrantcommunities, what seem to be the mostimportant issues are immigration, andthe economy, but the recent newsabout the climate crises have alsoinfluenced many voters to look at thedifferent platforms which demonstrate aparty’s willingness to do somethingserious in combatting disastrousclimate changes.Climate ChangeLiberal

The Liberals have committed tophasing out coal power by 2030 to helpmeet the carbon emission reductiontargets set out in the Paris agreement. They’ve pledged to hit net-zeroemissions by 2050. The party says it willend “inefficient” fossil fuel subsidies by2025 and ban some single-use plasticsas early as 2021.Conservative

Conservatives say they arecommitted to meeting the Parisagreement target but would axe thecarbon tax. They propose replacing apolicy taxing heavy emitters withrequirements they invest in cleantechnology or research. The party

wants to sign agreements allowingCanada to get credit for helpingachieve emissions reductionsinternationally and launch a green-techpatent tax credit for businesses.New Democrat

The NDP says it wants toreduce emissions by 38 per cent below2005 levels by 2030. To get there, itwould spend $15 billion retrofittingbuildings and create a “climate bank”to invest in renewable energy and cleantechnology. It wants to introduce asingle-use plastics ban by 2022 and toboost the support fund for communitieshit by natural disasters.Green

The Greens aim to reduceemissions to 60 per cent below 2005levels by 2030 — doubling Canada’scurrent Paris agreement targets — andhit net-zero emissions by 2050. Theparty would ban fracking, end importsof foreign oil and oppose fossil fuelprojects. It says it would end fossil fuelsubsidies within a year.ImmigrationLiberal

Immigration has increasedunder the Liberals; 321,045 immigrantscame in 2018 — the largest numbersince the First World War. The partyhopes to bump that number to 350,000by 2021. Liberal Immigration MinisterAhmed Hussen said he wants to acceptmore refugees, while the Liberalgovernment has imposed measures tocrack down on “asylum-shopping” andregulate immigration consultants.Conservative

Conservatives haven’t saidhow many immigrants they wouldaccept each year. But leader AndrewScheer has stressed the importance of“economic immigration” and prioritizingthose facing “true persecution.”Conservatives also want to crack downon illegal border crossings. They wouldinstead promote the privatesponsorship of refugees and increaserefugee screening.New Democrat

The NDP don’t cite a specificnumber when asked how manyimmigrants they would accept. Theparty has stressed the need to tackleapplicant backlogs and prioritize familyreunification. It promises to regulate theimmigration consultant industry and getrid of the Safe Third Countryagreement, which prevents migrantswho made claims in the U.S. frommaking claims in Canada.Green

Greens want to increaseimmigration to places that can’t fill jobvacancies, but don’t cite targets for thenumber they would accept. The party

Tax credits or cash? Parties spar overwhat is best for parental benefits

Conservative Party of Canada Leader Andrew Scheer, Liberal Party Leader Justin Trudeau, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh, Green Party LeaderElizabeth May, Bloc Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet and People's Party of Canada Leader Maxime Bernier are pictured in this compositeimage. (Images via The Canadian Press)Stephanie Levitz The Canadian PressTuesday, September 17, 2019OTTAWA -- Is it better to be paid incredit or with cash?

That's a question Liberals andConservatives tusseled over Tuesdayin the ongoing federal electioncompetition for the votes of middle-class families.

The Liberals promised anexpansion to existing child and parentbenefit programs, including a pledgeto make maternity and parentalbenefits tax-free, effectively one-

upping their Conservative rivals who'dmade a similar pitch last week.

For the Liberals, the promisecame in the form of a commitment toremoving the taxes from the benefits.

"You'll get every dollar rightwhen you need it, since no taxes willbe taken off the EI cheque when newparents receive it," Trudeau said at anevent in St. John's, N.L.

The Conservatives, who havealso claimed to be making the benefitstax-free, are promising a tax credit. Soparents would still see their benefits

taxed by the government, but they'dget a tax credit in return.

The duelling pitchesunderscore the differing ideologicalapproaches taken by the parties onhow best to woo voters.

Since the campaign beganlast Wednesday, the Conservativeshave focused nearly exclusively onpromising a wide array of tax cuts.

By contrast, the Liberals havefocused on increased programspending and, in the case of benefitsfor families, straight cash -- both in

taking the taxes off the benefits, andvia the promise Tuesday to expand theexisting Canada Child Benefit to givemore money to parents with childrenunder the age of one.

Conservative Leader AndrewScheer argued the Liberals were in factadopting a Tory tone by expanding theCCB.

People's Party of CanadaLeader Maxime Bernier has taken hiscampaign to New Brunswick for themiddle part of the week.

Former ProgressiveConservative Prime Minister BrianMulroney says any politician whochooses to ignore climate change intheir campaigning will "pay the price."

In an interview with Don Martinon CTV's Power Play, which airedTuesday, Mulroney pointed out thatwhen it comes to climate change, "thebroad middle class in Canada will notaccept indifference on this issue."

"[Canadians] want more thananything else, I think Don, to passon…to their children andgrandchildren, a pristine environment, and anybody that doesn't understandthat or campaigns against it is going topay the price," Mulroney said.Pollsters have been echoing

Mulroney's warning. A Sept. 9 pollconducted by Nanos Research foundthat just over 27 per cent of Canadianssaid the environment is the most likelyissue to influence their vote – topping

the list of their key concerns. It's not an overly surprising

stance for Mulroney, who in 2006 wascrowned the "greenest prime minister"in Canadian history following a survey

of environmental experts. His passageof the Environmental Protection Actand his fight against acid rain were keymoves that saw the former primeminister land that prize.

In his interview with Martin,Mulroney went on to emphasize theachievements of another key greenfigure: Green Party Leader ElizabethMay.

"Elizabeth May worked for mein 1985 and 86, and she wasresponsible for a lot of goodwork…and I'm delighted thatElizabeth, who's an outstandingperson, that she is bringing to publicattention the calamitous effects of non-action in this area," he said, referring toclimate change.

NEW YORK — Young peopleafraid for their futures protested aroundthe globe Friday to implore leaders totackle climate change, turning out bythe hundreds of thousands to insistthat the warming world can't wait foraction.

Marches, rallies anddemonstrations were held fromCanberra to Kabul and Cape Town toNew York, and German police reportedthat more than 100,000 turned out inBerlin.

Days before a U.N. climatesummit of world leaders, the "GlobalClimate Strike" events ranged fromabout two dozen activists in Seoulusing LED flashlights to send Morsecode messages calling for action torescue the earth to Australiademonstrations that organizersestimated were the country's largestprotests since the Iraq War began in2003.

"Basically, our earth is dying, and if we don't do something about it,we die," said A.J. Conermann, a 15-year old high school sophomoreamong several thousand who marchedto the Capitol building in Washington.

"I want to grow up. I want tohave a future," Conermann added.

In New York, where publicschools excused students withparental permission, tens of thousandsof mostly young people marchedthrough lower Manhattan, brieflyshutting down some streets.

"Sorry I can't clean my room,I'm busy saving the world," oneprotester's sign declared.

And in Paris, teenagers andkids as young as 10 traded classroomsfor the streets. Marie-Lou Sahai, 15,skipped school because "the only wayto make people listen is to protest."

The demonstrations werepartly inspired by the activism ofSwedish teenager Greta Thunberg, who has staged weekly "Fridays forFuture" demonstrations for a year, urging world leaders to step up effortsagainst climate change.

"It's such a victory," Thunbergtold The Associated Press in an

interview in New York. "I would neverhave predicted or believed that thiswas going to happen, and so fast —and only in 15 months."

Thunberg spoke at a rally laterFriday and is expected to participate ina U.N. Youth Climate Summit onSaturday and speak at the U.N.Climate Action Summit with globalleaders on Monday.

"They have this opportunity todo something, and they should takethat," she said. "And otherwise, theyshould feel ashamed."

The world has warmed about 1degree Celsius (1.8 Fahrenheit) sincebefore the Industrial Revolution, andscientists have attributed more than 90percent of the increase to emissions ofheat-trapping gases from fuel-burningand other human activity.

Scientists have warned thatglobal warming will subject Earth torising seas and more heat waves, droughts, powerful storms, floodingand other problems, and that somehave already started manifestingthemselves.

Climate change has maderecord-breaking heat temperaturerecords twice as likely as record-setting cold temperatures over the pasttwo decades in the contiguous U.S.,according to National Oceanic andAtmospheric Administration data.

Nations around the worldrecommitted at a 2015 summit in Paristo hold warming to less than 2 degreesCelsius (3.6 Fahrenheit) more than pre-industrial-era levels by the end of thiscentury, and they added a moreambitious goal of limiting the increaseto 1.5 C (2.7F).

But U.S. President DonaldTrump subsequently announced thathe was withdrawing the U.S. from theagreement, which he said benefitedother nations at the expense ofAmerican businesses and taxpayers.

Trump called global warmingas a "hoax" before becoming president. He has since said he's "not denyingclimate change" but is not convincedit's manmade or permanent.

New York protester Pearl

Seidman, 13, hoped the demonstrationwould tell the Trump administration"that if they can't be adults, we're goingto be adults. Because someone needsto do it." At least one Trump supporterwaved a large "Trump 2020" flag as thedemonstrators marched in Manhattan.

In Florida, high schoolstudents shouted "Miami is underattack" in Miami Beach, where someworried about losing their homes torising water. On the West Coast,student-led protests drew in someGoogle and Amazon employees.

Amazon, which ships morethan 10 billion items a year, vowedThursday to cut its use of fossil fuels, and Google CEO Sundar Pichai toldthe Financial Times in a storypublished Friday that eliminating thecompany's carbon emissions by 2030didn't seem "unreasonable."

Friday's demonstrationsstarted in Australia, where organizersestimated 300,000 protesters marchedin 110 towns and cities, includingSydney and the national capital,Canberra. Demonstrators called fortheir country, the world's largestexporter of coal and liquid natural gas,to take more drastic action to reducegreenhouse gas emissions.

Acting Prime Minister MichaelMcCormack — filling in while PrimeMinister Scott Morrison was on a statevisit to the United States — saidAustralia was already taking action tocut emissions. McCormack called theclimate rallies " a disruption" thatshould have been held on a weekendto avoid inconveniences.

Many middle schools in largelycoal-reliant Poland gave students theday off so they could participate in therallies in Warsaw and other cities, andPresident Andrzej Duda joined schoolstudents picking up trash in a forest.German police said more than 100,000people gathered in front of Berlin'slandmark Brandenburg Gate, nearwhere Chancellor Angela Merkel'sCabinet thrashed out the final details ofa 54 billion euro ($60 billion) plan tocurb Germany's greenhouse gasemissions .

Thousands of schoolchildren

and their adult supportersdemonstrated in London outside theBritish Parliament. The Britishgovernment said it endorsed theprotesters' message but didn'tcondone skipping school — a stancethat didn't sit well with some of theyoung protesters.

"If politicians were taking theappropriate action we need and hadbeen taking this action a long time agowhen it was recognized the world waschanging in a negative way, then Iwould not have to be skipping school,"said Jessica Ahmed, a 16-year-oldLondon student.

In Helsinki, the Finnish capital,a man dressed as Santa Claus stoodoutside parliament holding a sign: "Myhouse is on fire, my reindeer can'tswim."

Smaller protests took place inAsia, including in Japan, South Korea, the Philippines, Hong Kong and India. In the Afghan capital, Kabul, anarmored personnel carrier wasdeployed to protect about 100 youngpeople as they marched, led by agroup of several young womencarrying a banner emblazoned with"Fridays for Future."

"We know war can kill a groupof people," said Fardeen Barakzai, oneof the organizers. "The problem inAfghanistan is our leaders are fightingfor power, but the real power is innature."

In South America, scores ofdemonstrators gathered outside theRio de Janeiro state legislature inBrazil, where a recent increase in firesin the Amazon region stirred aninternational outcry.

In Africa, demonstrators ralliedin Johannesburg and the South Africancapital, Pretoria, while some youngprotesters in Nairobi, Kenya, wore hatsand outfits made from plastic bottles toemphasize the dangers of plasticwaste, a major threat to cities andoceans.ByJENNIFER PELTZ AND FRANKJORDANS, ASSOCIATED PRESSNEWYORK — Sep 20, 2019, 7:51 PM ET

He said one doesn’t have toaccept all May's ideas – or "those of theGreen Party" – to see that Canadians willnot settle for indifference on the issue.

Mulroney said People's PartyLeader Maxime Bernier's stance onclimate issues, which includes the beliefthat Canada is only liveable thanks to"natural climate change," will be a toughsell.

"I like Maxime, but he may – he'sgoing to find it difficult to sell that ideaanywhere in Canada," Mulroney said.

Voters will give their verdict onparties' environmental platforms – andother key issues – when they head to thepolls in the federal election on Oct. 21.

Parties should stay the courseon Quebec secularism bill: Mulroney

Mulroney also weighed in onanother hot button issue: thecontroversial Quebec secularism bill, which bans religious symbols forteachers, police officers and other publicservants in positions of authority.

He said the government shouldallow the ongoing court challenge of thebill to proceed – and could considerintervening at a later date.

"It'll eventually wind up in theSupreme Court of Canada. Thegovernment may wish to intervene at theCourt of Appeal or at the Supreme Courtlevel if they wish at the time, but for themoment I think they're following anacceptable path by allowing the courts todeal with it in an objective and fairmanner," Mulroney said.

The case is moving on to theQuebec Court of Appeal after the Courtagreed on Aug. 1 to revisit the issue. They have yet to announce when thatchallenge will take place.

Kristine Sabillo, ABS-CBN NewsPosted at Sep 18 2019 01:23 AMMANILA—The United NationsEnvironment Programme (UNEP) onWednesday announced its winners forthe prestigious Young Champions ofthe Earth Prize.

Of the 7 young entrepreneurs,20-year-old Filipino chef LouiseMabulo was recognized as the winnerfor the Asia and the Pacific region.

UNEP cited Mabulo for takingaction to address climate changethrough her “Cacao Project.”

“Mabulo’s solution, the CacaoProject, has trained over 200 farmers inagroforestry techniques, planting morethan 70,000 trees across 70 hectares ofland,” UNEP said in a statement.

Mabulo will receive the prize inNew York, days after the global climatestrike and the UN climate summits.

Mabulo, who first gainedpopularity as a young chef when shebecame a finalist of ABS-CBN’s JuniorMasterChef cooking competition, saidshe started the project after TyphoonNina (international name Nock Ten)devastated her home province of Bicol

in 2016.“It started out as a typhoon

relief project,” she said, adding thatshe bought cacao seedlings from herown savings and some donations.

While she was focused on hercareer as a chef, she started going intofarming and agriculture as part of herinterest in sustainable food valuechains.

It was then that she realizedhow unsustainable it was for farmers inBicol to continue planting crops thatwere not climate-resilient.

After the 2016 typhoon, manyrice fields in her hometown of SanFernando were left flooded. A largenumber of coconut trees weredestroyed because of the strongwinds.

“We realized we can’t justweather through the yearly typhoon,”Mabulo told ABS-CBN News in aphone interview. “Coconut trees wouldtake another 5 years (to mature). Wehad to think of something moreresilient and something more profitablefor the farmers and with demand forthe market.”

Pinay chef bags UN award forhelping Bicol farmers

UN Environment ProgrammeMabulo discovered that the

cacao tree was just the right height towithstand strong winds. “Our soil isalso perfect for growing cacao trees. It’s sustainable,” she said.

Since it takes a cacao treearound 3 years to mature, the projectalso provides short-term crops for thefarmers so they can earn a living whilewaiting to harvest cacao.

By winning the YoungChampions of the Earth Prize, Mabulowill be receiving $15,000 (P783,900)for her “Cacao Project.” She plans touse the money to set up a training andprocessing center. She will also bereceiving mentoring andcommunications support.

She is hoping that onceharvested, the farmers can learn how

to process the cacao to makechocolates.

UNEP executive director IngerAndersen said "building resilience in aclimate changing world is critical tohelping communities weather thechallenges of extreme weather events. And in doing so, we can create jobs, build more livable cities, and improvethe well-being of the world’s mostvulnerable, making sure no one is left

behind.”Mabulo said she has been

receiving a lot of inquiries fromcompanies interested in purchasingtheir upcoming harvest.

“It’s a way to make sure thatcompanies are sourcing theirchocolate sustainably,” she said, adding that they will make sure that thepricing is fair to the farmers.

Mabulo said her dream is tomake cacao farming an “art form” thatwill be as attractive as wine andvineyards.

As for the winning the UNprize, she said, “Getting this kind ofaward and attention for a project isabsolutely amazing. It’s not just for mebut for the farmers and for bringing thePhilippine industry in the spotlight.”

Mabulo and the 6 other

winners bested over 1,000 applicantsunder the age of 30. They were chosenfor their creative, innovative andimpactful initiatives addressing climatechange.

Before receiving her award,Mabulo will be attending and givingtalks at the UN Youth Climate Summitand other climate-related events inNew York.

MANILA - President RodrigoDuterte has signed into law a measuremeant to improve the globalcompetitiveness of local education byallowing the presence of foreign schoolsin the country.

Republic Act No. 11448, or theTransnational Higher Education Act,which was signed on Aug. 28 and madepublic Wednesday, expands access toeducation by encouraging partnershipsbetween foreign and local universities.

It is meant to modernize thehigher-education sector, “with a view of .. . attracting a flow of talented students, faculty and staff and improving thecountry’s human resource base,” thelaw stated.

Under the new measure, theCommission on Higher Education(CHEd) is tasked to formulate a nationalstrategy for the formation oftransnational higher educationprograms and institutions forundergraduate, graduate andpostgraduate degrees in the Philippines.

Foreign universities, through alocal partner, could put up branch

campuses, as long as Filipino studentscomprise at least two-thirds ofenrollment. Foreigners could fill up morethan 80 percent of faculty and up to 40percent of the administrative personneland staff in the local branches.

Foreign universities are alsoallowed to promote “twinning”arrangements or joint degrees with localuniversities under the law.

Local universities withprograms recognized by CHEd,meanwhile, are allowed to offer theirservices abroad, as long as theseschools abide by the rules andregulations of the host country.

MANILA- Malacañang onWednesday called international rightswatchdog Global Witness a source oflies after the group published a reporton the sharp increase of murders ofenvironmental activists and landdefenders in the Philippines under theadministration of President RodrigoDuterte.

The group has “falsely andunfairly” pinned on the President theblame for the death of 113 landdefenders since Duterte becamepresident in mid-2016, hisspokesperson Salvador Panelo said.

“The Palace considers the UK-based group Global Witness as apurveyor of falsity and a subservientmachinery for political propaganda,”Panelo said.

“There is nothing new to itssham assertion which mimics therecurring chants of the usualderogators of PRRD (PresidentRodrigo Roa Duterte).”

Global Witness, in its latestreport, alleged that President Duterte’s

speeches and policies have"emboldened" killers.

In July, the group said 30killings in the Philippines last yearmade it the deadliest country in theworld for land defenders -- a first sincethe group began reporting suchdeaths in 2012.

Murders of land activists spikeunder Philippines' Duterte: watchdog“Global Witness has once again madeit appear that it is the DuterteAdministration which is the raisond'etre (most important reason) for thesituation befalling these land andenvironmental defenders,” Panelosaid.

The Duterte spokesmanclaimed that the group’s recent reportis a “mere rehash” of a previousstatement and instead blamedcommunist insurgents over deaths ofland defenders, saying the rebelswanted to “control” such areas.

Canada’s 10 most in demand jobsof 2019 – and their pay: Randstad

In order to give you an ideawhat to consider in looking for a career,we quote an excerpt below which isself-explanatory:

"When considering educationand career choices, think about thethings you'll be doing on a daily basis. It's important that you do something youcan be passionate about, some-thingthat fits your personality and interests.Something you like and are good at.Also, develop a skill set that isadaptable, one that can be applied todifferent aspects of your chosen field."--Michael Kelleher

After two years of keeping thepedal to the metal, there are signs thatthe Canadian economy is going to easeoff the gas a bit in 2019. But there is nosign yet of that expected slowdown inthe labour market. Unemployment is stillat 5.6 per cent, a 40-year low.

It turns out there are two kindsof hot jobs. The first are the ones thatregister the highest number of vacanciesacross the country. Those are the jobsthe economy is creating right now.

Then there are what Randstadcalls “emerging jobs.” These are newroles, almost exclusively in tech, thatdidn’t exist until a few years — or a fewmonths — ago. The volume of openpositions for these roles is often smaller, but fewer Canadians have the chops tofill those positions, and competitionamong employers to recruit top talent isfierce. This is where the economy islikely headed.

Here are the top five jobs ineach category:

Most in-demand jobs:Sales associate

Forget the doom and gloomabout the demise of brick and mortar

stores. Sales associate is the most in-demand role in Canada right now, according to Randstad.

One possible explanation: retailtrade is the country’s largest employer, providing jobs for some two millionCanadians, or over 10 per cent of theworkforce. With the economy doing well, the sector is adding lots of warm bodies, which is perhaps temporarily masking alonger-term trend of decline.

Carolyn Levy at RandstadCanada, though, offers a differentnarrative. “People still want the bricksand mortar retail experience,” she toldGlobal News.

Rather than edging out in-storeshopping, e-commerce is increasinglycomplementing it. Often people do theirresearch online but then head to thestore to check out products and getadvice in person. Retailers need salesassociates to deliver the extra servicethat will make it worthwhile for you tomake it to the store, Levy said.

For example, someone headingto Best Buy to purchase a Google Homesmart speaker may already know allabout its features and capability. Thesales associate, though, can tell them allabout how to set up their new gadget,Levy said.

For permanent positions, jobpays between $52,000 and $62,000 onaverage, according to Randstad data.Administrative assistant

This is another job that wassupposed to be a prime target for robottakeover. But the position is evolvingalong with the new technology, Levysaid.

In addition to the usual clericaltasks, administrative assistants who cantake on functions such as accountingand bookkeeping are most in demand,

according to Randstad.Something that employers

need to focus is offering [opportunitiesfor workers to upgrade their skills], sothat they can make the most of thoseroles,” Levy said.

Pay is between $44,000 andjust under $52,000.Driver

If you have a commercialvehicle licence or a certificate tooperate a forklift, there’s a job for you. With the economy humming, moregoods are being shipped across thecountry and stacked into warehouses— hence the demand for people whocan help move the merchandise.

Forklift operator, in particular,is an opportunity for new immigrants toCanada, Levy said. While truck driverscoming from warmer climates mightneed some adjusting to winterconditions, working a forklift looks thesame no matter where you come from.

“It’s a skill that translates,”Levy said.

Pay is between $42,000 and$51,000 according to the Randstaddataset. That, though, doesn’t reflectgigs like long-haul trucking, whereCanadians might make over $100,000a year, according to Global Newsreporting.

DeveloperMuch of the economy runs on

code — and on the people who canwrite it, whether it’s building apps orbusiness software.

Though all sorts of developersare in high demand in Canada, so-called full-stack developers are themost wanted, according to Randstad. They are the ones who can handleboth front-end programming — theconsumer interface — and the back-end, the part that users never see andwhere data is stored or processed.

Average wages in theRandstad dataset are between justunder $85,000 and over $101,000.

ReceptionistMuch of what can be said

about administrative assistants holdsfor receptionists, too. The role is fairlyeasy to automate, but it turns out thatbeing greeted by an iPad doesn’t makefor great customer experience.

The job now generally requiresknowledge of telephone systems andcomputer programs that recordcustomer information. At smaller firms, receptionists might also take on someaccounting and bookkeeping, as wellas manage the company’s socialmedia accounts, Levy said.

Receptionists make between$35,000 and almost $41,000 onaverage, according to Randstad.

Emerging jobsRandstad couldn’t provide

complete pay data for its emergingjobs category, but previous reportingby Global News found thatcompensation for developers andresearchers working on blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI) and datascience easily reaches $100,000 ormore even for those fresh out of school(although, especially with AI, thoseworking in the field often havegraduate degrees or PhDs)Blockchain developer

You may associate the word“blockchain” with cryptocurrency, butthe technology that made it possible tocreate digital money has countlessother potential applications.Blockchain provides a permanentrecord of who owns what and whenownership is transferred in the digitalworld, creating a decentralizednetwork for moving data and value thatdoesn’t need to rely on a centralauthority or intermediaries. That can beused for anything from executingfinancial transactions based onconventional currency to storing andtransferring patient data securely. Andthat’s why old-economy employers likebanks and healthcare providers, toname just two, are rushing to developand experiment with their ownblockchains.

“We think we’re going to seemore blockchain developers present inenterprises versus just startups,” Levysaid. “Anywhere you have huge datasets, you’re going to see thisopportunity.”Automation engineer

Automation in supply chains isnothing new. Robots have longsupplanted humans when it comes tothings like stamping pastries orfastening bolts.

Now, though, robots are takingon more “human-like skills,” Levy said.Robots are now helping doctorsperform surgery, for example.

Needless to say, those whocan develop these kinds of machinesare in high demand.

Automation engineers canexpect to make between $65,000 and$79,000 in base salary, Randstad datashows.AI researcher

AI is software capable oflearning on its own, and artificial brainsfeed on enormous amounts of data. AIresearchers typically have abackground in software engineeringand data science and are tasked withbuilding AI that can perform specifictasks like spotting financial fraud, predicting customers’ needs or pickingup relevant information.

The boom in AI-related jobshas come as faster and cheapercomputers allow companies to siftthrough enormous volumes of data tospot useful patterns and makepredictions. And coders are using bigdata to train so-called artificiallyintelligent machines, software that iscapable of autonomous learning. Theapplications are seemingly endless:from the ability to recognize and tacklefraud in real time, through predictingcustomers’ needs to teaching a car todrive itself.

Artificial intelligence engineersare making between $77,000 and$92,000 on average in base salary, according to Randstad data.

Your health matters

Fatty liver disease is usuallyassociated with alcohol abuse. However obesity, metabolicsyndrome, hyperlipidemia and type 2diabetes are now well established riskfactors. In such cases it is calledNonAlcoholic Fatty Liver Disease(NAFLD) because the liver disease ispresent despite there being no historyof excess alcohol use in the affectedindividuals. When inflammation ispresent, it is a more severe form of thedisease and it is called Non-AlcoholicSteatohepatitis (NASH).

According to research, metabolic syndrome (insulinresistance) appears to be theunderlying issue in non alcoholic fattyliver disease. This is why it iscommonly observed in people withtype 2 diabetes. It is also beingincreasingly observed amongindividuals who have experiencedrapid loss. There are reports of peoplewho have lost between 18kg – 91kgdeveloping fatty liver disease withinflammation.

The incidence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease isincreasing globally and especially inthe USA. Approximately 30% of thepopulation of the United States (90million persons) are estimated to beaffected by NAFLD. The majority oftype 2 diabetics are said to beaffected. Non-alcoholic fatty livertypically progresses slowly and maynot be clinically apparent becausethere are often no symptoms in theearly stages. In addition, it requires abiopsy for definitive diagnosis. Despitethis, it is emerging as the mostcommon cause of liver cirrhosis andthe most common indication for a livertransplant. Up to 20% of patients withNon Alcoholic Fatty Liver Diseaseprogress to liver cirrhosis slowly over aperiod of about 15-years.

There are however cases ofnon alcoholic steatohepatitis thatprogress over months as opposed toyears. A 2017 report in the journal ofModern Pathology describes 5individuals who lost weight rapidly dueto fasting, intestinal resection orbariatric surgery. These individualsdeveloped advanced fatty liverdisease within a relatively short periodof time. Four out of the five patientseither died or underwent livertransplants to save their lives.

The mechanism of NAFLD isnot well understood, the same appliesto aggressive and rapidly deteriorating

NAFLD. What is known is that NAFLDalters the liver's ability to metabolizedrugs. Important components of theliver's detoxification system have beenobserved to be down regulated in thepresence of non-alcoholic fatty liverdisease. It it therefore hypothesizedthat some drugs may become moretoxic to individuals with this condition. The increased susceptibility of the liverto toxicity in addition to rapid weightloss is thought to trigger hepaticinflammation and/or exacerbatesteatohepatitis with progression toliver failure within a relatively shorttimeframe.

The economic cost of thiscondition for Canadians is not yetclear. However, the economic burdenof NAFLD in the United States isestimated to be anywhere between 32to 103 billion dollars annually. There iscurrently no standard therapy or drugsfor this disease. Proper nutrition andexercise are the recommendedtreatment. Weight loss at a safe andsteady rate of 1 to 2lbs per week isrecommended for those who areoverweight in order to reduce theamount of fat in the liver. Faster ratesof weight loss could exacerbate thecondition and lead to advanced liverdisease. Non-alcoholic fatty liverdisease is usually reversible in theearly stages. The liver can return toadequate function after weightstabilizes and proper nutrition habitsare adopted.

PBSSQ President JosefaNicholas was up and about as she wasdirecting everything that washappening. Nobody can mistakeEpang! She went around the place inher bright blue gown . Also not to bemissed were David Lam and JeannettePerignon (in an all-white ensemble)who both emceed the party.

The centerpiece of theevening was started after the guestspeaker, Marilou Esguerra, gave heradvice to the upcoming slew of aspiringstudents. The 2019 Benevolent Awardwas given to Mila Osdon, commendedfor her numerous voluntary activitieswith children and involvements inmany church ministries. I bet nobodycan replicate her dedication to St. KevinParish and to the Secular FranciscanOrder, among others. Anotherbenevolent awardee was MarvinRotrand, whose service to the Filipinocommunity is so voluminous (if all ismentioned) that it will fill up the wholeStar newspaper! Suffice it to say thatthe Filipino community is richer andbetter served with Marvin in our corner.Another awardee was AnthonyHousefather whose office is alwaysopen to anyone needing help! Lastbut not least is Mellie de Guzman, anextraordinary person. Judging fromher involvement in benevolent activities

Ex Officio PBSSQ PresidentNilo Valenzuela was everywhereoverseeing the progress of the party. Ican’t resist printing Natalie Pelausa’spart of Reflections which she alwaysfills up every year at the time of PBSSQAwards Night. Here is the wisdom thatwe can glean from her: “A mindthrough which Christ thinks, a heartthrough which Christ loves, eyesthrough which Christ sees, a facethrough which Christ smiles, handsthrough which Christ touches, andvoice through which Christ offershope.”

The 6th Canada RegionalAssembly held a 3-day gathering onSeptember 13-15, hosted by MontrealChapter, Eastern Canada Region;Mackenzie Chapter, Eastern CanadaRegion; and Gatineau Chapter. On thefirst day, September 13th, delegatesarrived and registered at the CrownPlaza Hotel (Montreal Airport) wherethey were billeted. Supper was servedat 6767 Cote-des- Neiges. Everybodyhad fun as they seemed to have letloose their inhibitions. The night wasmostly spent singing, karaoke style. The second day, September 14, wasGala Night and Knights of Rizal (KOR)Commander’s Ball held at the HellenicCommunity Center, on Wilderton,Montreal. The program started with the

processional which included thefollowing KORs: Sir Hector Racuya, SirAlexander Famularcano, Sir RolandoEsperon, Sir Ernesto Galcon, Sir DarioBoco, and Sir Rey Balansi. After theentrance, Grace Balansi sang OCanada and Pambansang Awit andPanday Tinig brought us back home bytheir rendition of Lupang Hinirang andStar Spangled Banner. Father GregNunez gave the Invocation, the AreaCommander welcomed the guests, andthe program began in earnest. Themusical drama “Mi Ultimo Adios”presented by members of theMackenzie Central Chapter wasdirected by Sir Rowel Pangilinan.ANCOP, led by Renato Kabigting, serenaded the crowd. And the solovocalists – Lady Grace Balansi,Michelle Vargas Lao, Astrid Torrico, SirFreddie Espinosa, and Sir James de laPaz - certainly mesmerized theaudience! And as usual, the Pamanang Luzviminda Dance Company ofMontreal left us in awe as theygracefully interpreted their numbers. Not to be outdone was CaringTabunar’s Seniors in Motion dancers, whose lively moves belied their age. After the musical portion of theprogram, Sir James de la Pazintroduced the speakers who spokekindly of Dr. Jose Rizal’s virtues. Eachof the speakers expressed their wish forthe youth to emulate his intellect, heroism, and his vision for the Filipinopeople. The messages came from: SirNoel Fernandez (consul from thePhilippine Embassy), Hon. AnthonyHousefather, MP.; Hon. RachelBendayan, MP; Hon. Sir Gerry Danzil was quick toacknowledge their enthusiasm in evenknowing Dr. Rizal’s greatness. FreddyEspinosa was at his best as the Masterof Ceremonies.

I can vouch that everybody inthe dancing hall was in gorgeousFilipiniana attire in different styles, shapes, and colors. I’m sure that eachlady who gave one last look at themirror before going to the Gala musthave said, “ I look beautiful!” Andevery guest and KORs looked youngand handsome in their barongs!

Standouts in the gowndepartment were Lady Rose de la Paz(in her flowered and fitted half-dress,half-gown, certainly passing for a verymodern Filipiniana), Lady Marilyn deLuna, Jackie Rotrand, Doris Tabo-oy,Flor Dumandan, Trans Liganor, CionyNueva, Cesa Gladysz, Zeny Kharroubi,Evi Magahes, Elvie Maximo, ValentLloyd Hughes, Norma Vohra, CaringTabunar, and Minda Mazzone, amongothers. And I have compassion for theladies at the registration table: LadyChery Palmos, Lady Claire Boco, LadyLinda Danzil, and Lady Julie Tabamoand many others (I’m sorry if I misssome of you, ladies!). They were therewhen I arrived and were still there whenI left. You deserve my admiration! Ihope you had the chance to show yourattractive gowns! And if there was anOscar nomination for Best Performancethat night, it would go to Luz Domingo(who acted as Dr. Rizal’s mother), regalin her red Filipiniana outfit.

Congratulations to the success

According to the wise wordsof our national hero, “Ang kabataanang pag-asa ng bayan.”

For some of us, these arenothing but empty words. But forsomeone with a heart as pure asDingdong Dantes’, these words havebecome the premise in establishinghis chaired foundation centered on

youth empowerment and nation-building programs, the YesPinoyFoundation, Inc. (YPF).

Yet, apart from the countlesscharacters that Dingdong hasbreathed life into in the course of hiscolorful two-decade career as aKapuso, some people may not beaware that he wears different hats

Dingdong Dantes: more than just an actor

Under Project 888, Dingdong and YPF visit schools andcommunities to conduct leadership symposium such as this onein Saranggani Province.

besides that of an actor. He was a former

commissioner of the National YouthCommission; an entrepreneur owningmultiple business ventures; an armyreservist; an active supporter of youthand environmental advocacies; andnot to mention an amazing dad to Ziaand Ziggy and a loving husband tohis wife Marian Rivera.

They say a simple act ofkindness can ignite a movement thatcan one day change the world. This, perhaps, is what fired the enthusiasmof Dingdong when he established thefoundation on that fateful day of Aug.21, 2009. Initially formed to bridgeresource gaps in education and helpout-of-school youth and children offallen soldiers, YesPinoy has evolvedand focuses on a now larger scalecause — YES or Youth,Empowerment and Service to thecountry.

“This is the issue we want toaddress; we want to make the youthas heroes kahit na bata pa sila. Paanonila mapagtatanggol ‘yung kapatid okaibigan nila kung ‘yung sarili nilahindi nila kayang ipagtanggol,”expresses Dantes.

Coming from a family ofsoldiers, Dingdong has beeninfluenced by his relatives to alwaysput his life in the service of othersleading to his decision to enlist in2006 and be a part of the PhilippineMarine Reserve corps.

In spite of being a marine

reservist, Dingdong still feels the needto serve his country in a moreconcrete and sustainable way hence, the birth of YPF, which he effectivelychampions with the help ofpassionate benefactors andvolunteers from various institutionssuch as the GMA Kapuso Foundation.

As part of its initiatives oneducation, YPF provides scholarshipopportunities and participates in theannual Brigada Eskwela of theDepartment of Education (DepEd). Inaddition, it has turned over classroombuildings and donated school chairsthrough The One Chair, One ChildProject in Iloilo.

As a champion ofenvironmental causes, YPF hastrained young people and leaders onclimate action, disaster preparednessand responsible citizenship;distributed go bags and emergencykits; led post-disaster programs; andestablished partnerships with schoolsand communities.

YPF also launched I amSuper, a disaster preparednesscampaign that organizes trainings inpublic schools and distributes YPF’semergency go bags.

Recently, the foundation alsopartnered with the Stunt Associationof the Philippines and the SeoulAction School-Korea to convenetogether all stunt actors and directorsin the country for a series of extensivetrainings and seminars titled Project#BeScene.

Will Catriona’s reign as MissUniverse be extended?

A little more than threemonths and Catriona Gray will berelinquishing her Miss Universecrown to the new queen. But the bigquestion is: when and where will the2019 Miss U pageant be held? Unlikein the past when the next venue was

announced almost as soon as thecurrent pageant ended, the MissUniverse Organization (MUO) is sofar mum on the date and place of thisyear’s pageant.

There were (unconfirmed)reports that it would be held in Seoulwhere in 1980 the Philippine bet, thelate Chat Silayan, finished thirdrunner-up to USA’s Shawn Weatherly.MUO neither denied nor confirmed it.

Will it be held in thePhilippines for the fourth time (after1974 won by the late Amparo Muñozof Spain; 1994 by India’s SushmitaSen; and 2016 by France’s IrisMittenaere)?

Funfare’s source at the DOTsaid no.

“No such negotiation is goingon between the Philippines and theMUO,” the source said.

In that case, if ever MUOcouldn’t find a venue, does that meanCatriona’s reign will be extended?

Incidentally, at the moment,2019 Miss Universe PhilippinesGazini Ganados is being rankedamong the top bets. Is a back-to-back win possible for the Philippines,so far a feat pulled only by Venezuela(Dayana Mendoza in 2008 and 2009Stefania Fernandez)?

Maja Salvador once said thatshe does not give her past lovesanother shot. So, how come she“broke” her self-imposed rule andrekindled her romance with non-showbiz guy, Rambo Nuñez, lastFebruary? He is the same guy withwhom Maja had a short-lived love affairnine years ago.

On Tonight with Boy Abunda afew nights back, Maja revealed thather relationship with Rambo onlylasted for three months in 2010.

“Bagets pa kasi e,” shereasoned out. “I was only 21 years oldthen and he just graduated. S’yempre,‘pag bagets, there are things that needto be prioritized. In my case, I neededto sacrifice love. (Then) after nineyears, nung nag-post ako saInstagram (ay) nung nagpadala ngas’ya ng flowers na may card sayingthank you that I’m his Valentine afternine years.”

Her mom, she continued, called her right away asking if the guywho sent flowers was Rambo andcounted back the years that she lasttalked to him “because when weparted ways, Rambo would go toMama asking if he could talk to me butshe didn’t tell that to me, until lately.Instead, Mama told Rambo, ‘Si Maja,‘pag nagdesisyon, nakapagdesisyonna talaga ‘yan.’ She also explainedthat I’m the breadwinner and all. AndMama also said to him, ‘Anak, kungkayo talaga, kayo talaga.’”

Rambo and Maja accidentallymet each other last year when thelatter was looking for a basketballcourt in BGC for her nephews whovisited from New York. It just sohappened that the gym she enrolledfor membership was also whereRambo was working out. Heapproached her and asked if she stillhad the same number. “So, I told my

Kris Bernal has finallyrecovered her Instagram profile, daysafter it was seized by hackers, alongwith her other social media accountsand personal email.

“Good day all, [it’s] finally me,Kris B, talking to you in my ownpersonal account,” the actress said inher Instagram post yesterday, Sept.25.

“The past few days had beenso chaotic for me,” she added.“Especially how my personal life hasbeen risked in danger because ofcyberhackers.”

She stated that it took herthree “tedious” attempts, before shemanaged to finally regain control ofher Instagram page.

“The first time GMA [thenetwork’s social media team] helpedme to retrieve it, the hacker still kept oncoming back, sending me messagesand calling me on whatsapp, until Isecured it.”

Bernal said the hackers“attack” between 2 to 5 a.m., when theactress is supposedly asleep.

The actress added that hernon-showbiz boyfriend, Perry Choi, advised her to create her vlog post lastSunday, Sept. 22, where she firstspoke about her social media andpersonal email being compromised.Bernal stressed that she made thevideo to immediately warn herfollowers, in case the hackers

attempted to use her account to getmoney from them.

“The vlog I posted was as realand raw as it is,” she stated. “As Ibecame so emotional thinking aboutthe consequences of the situation.”

Bernal revealed that her socialmedia and email were compromisedafter she accessed a link in amessage, which she thought camefrom Instagram, as per her exclusiveinterview with GMA News yesterday,Sept. 25.

According to the actress, themessage claimed she had committedcopyright infringement, and she had toreport to Instagram. Bernal was led tobelieve that she had to access acertain link to be able to report to thesocial media platform. She thenentered her account details, includingher password and email, in the saidlink.

Bernal added in the interviewthat she has only regained access toher Instagram account; her Twitterpage and email are still under thehackers’ control. Learning from theexperience, the actress advised thepublic to make use of the two-factorauthentication method to protect theiraccounts, since it was what helped herkeep the hackers from seizing herInstagram page again.

Maja recalled Rambo’s firsttext message was in August last year. She knew that Rambo felt her replywas not engaging “kasi nga may ruleako na walang balikan.”

It was in December when theystarted to exchange text messagesoften, and went out on dates, whichaccording to Maja, “presumably asfriends” the following month. “But youcan feel that there’s this attraction;ramdam mo na mayroon na parangwhat if we didn’t break up before,” shesaid.

Thus, she had a change ofheart and broke her rule, “probablybecause three months were not

enough. That must have been also thereason why my past relationshipsdidn’t last because I felt different inthose three months. He really loves meand the whole family as well. Iba ‘yun.”

The Killer Bride lead star alsoshared that Rambo also tried actingbefore but he was not used to the longhours of work during tapings.“Mahiyain din because whenever I tellhim to go to ABS, he would ask mewhy (laughs).”

While Maja is game aboutsharing her love story, she feels it’s notthe right time to reveal her answer ifand when Rambo proposes marriage.

“Hindi naman ako madamotabout my lovelife but that kind ofquestion, sana masagot ko ng sakanya na lang. Besides if I answernow, he will already know so there’s nothrill anymore; baka pag nag-planos’ya, hindi s’ya maiyak, hahahaha!”he said of their new collaboration.

Showbiz newcomers shouldget a tip or two from Vina Morales onmanaging to remain popular andtransition to much meatier, well-regarded roles. You see, Vina startedher singing career at only nine yearsold, and then later on, branched outto acting which led her to become ahousehold name.

Fast-forward to the present.Vina has been in showbiz for over 30years now and yet she remains on thelist of the “lucky few” artists whosetalent cannot easily be relegated tothe sidelines.

“I love my work that’s why Iam still here (show business). So, Ithink it’s really love for your work, foryour craft to stay long in the business.Oh my God, I’ve been here for morethan 30 years already and I’m sothankful and blessed that until nowthere are really good projects beingoffered to me,” said Vina.

In fact, Vina is starring in notjust one but two acting projects set toroll on screens in the coming days.Televiewers will see her in a dramaticrole in the ABS-CBN soap Sandugowhile her big screen outing is forDamaso: The Musical where thecharacter requires her to sing and actat the same time.

“I didn’t have secondthoughts about accepting the rolewhen director Joven (Tan) called mymanager telling her that I would beportraying as Sisa,” shared theactress. “Para sa akin, no actor orsinger will ever say no to play acharacter from Noli Me Tangere(book); historical movie ito at alamnatin kung sino si Sisa.”

Parts of the scenes were shotin Batangas and she, too, has justfinished recording the song meant for

Sisa.“I think not all the characters

are required to sing that’s why I’m soproud that I’m one of them. Feeling konasa teatro ako so when this wasoffered to me, okay agad because it’sa different experience to be in amusical within a film.”

Arnell Ignacio, the actressadded, will play the title role as PadreDamaso with Riva Quenery as MariaClara. Also playing important rolesare Ariel Rivera, Arlene Muhlach, LouVeloso, Leo Martinez and PinkyAmador, among others.

In Sandugo, Vina said hercharacter is far different from her pastroles.
