CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT

May I present the Chairperson’s report for 2015/16: What an eventful year it has been for TADSA during 2015/16. Change seems inevitable. The Management Committee worked diligently during the year to understand the changes in the funding models of the State and Federal Governments. The challenge to the organisation was to understand how it would manage change, address risk and how to secure the financial stability of TADSA into the future. At the start of the financial year the issues TADSA would need to address appeared daunting, especially in regards to the potential impact of the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS). Through the strategic planning process and with the engagement of our volunteers (members), it was identified the current constitution required revision to bring in a more contemporary document with a Board governance structure in place. The recruitment of experienced Board members with the necessary skills to guide the organisation, and the development of a comprehensive marketing strategy was seen as pivotal to the future sustainability of the organisation, particularly in relation to the continuation of the provision of our innovative services to our clients for the next 40 years. Our members were also consulted and they well received the proposal to change the name of the organisation from “Technical Aid to the Disabled SA Inc.” to “Technology for Ageing and Disability SA Inc.”, which is more in line with what we actually do, whilst still retaining the same acronym; “TADSA”. Operationally the number of projects completed was similar to the previous year with the engagement of a number of new skilled volunteers to assist our clients. Freedom Wheels has been very steady this year, our thanks to our volunteers Peter and Des for all their efforts with Freedom Wheels, including innovations in the steering and out riggers that have taken place enabling us to offer a better product to our clients. Last but not least thank you to the members of the Management Committee, staff and volunteers for their time and effort over the past year.

MANAGER’S REPORT

“I needed to write this in an email, could you please pass it on to the volunteer who looked after John. ‘He was fantastic! Such a great guy, a really nice person and he helped me by fitting a bigger drink bottle for the back of my wheelchair. Now I never run out of water, and this is very important because if I became dehydrated it would cause me huge problems. Thank you so much. I think it’s a great organisation’ John The above is one the many accolades TADSA received during the year. The passion and skills that our volunteers have, has had a significant impact on improving the quality of the lives of people with disabilities and the aged. TADSA continues to engage and provide equipment to National Disability Insurance Service (NDIS) participants (mainly through our Freedom Wheels program to enable children with disabilities to ride a modified bike that has been prepared by our Freedom Wheels volunteers.). TADSA staff and volunteers have put in an enormous effort to engage and understand the administrative processes of the NDIS. This is part of the framework of engaging with the NDIS on building strong and enduring relationships so that TADSA can embrace with confidence the changing funding environment into the NDIS future. The TADSA’s Management Committee and staff worked diligently through the year to amend the current TADSA Constitution to bring in a more contemporary document with a Board structure in place in the new financial year. A recruitment process has also been undertaken to identify persons with the appropriate skills to nominate as Board members who will to lead TADSA with the governance, policy and networking strategies to ensure the sustainability of the organisation in the long-term. TADSA has also worked on a Marketing Strategy that will see the development of a new interactive website, the development of sponsorship and funding opportunities and the development of mutual relationships with our clients, Disability and Aged Care Sectors and our volunteer base. This is an evolving and continuing process to put in place strategies, resources and linkages to ensure the sustainability of TADSA into the future in a rapidly changing external environment. The financial results for the year reflect a challenging operating environment for accessing funding through sponsorships and donations. Finally I would thank our volunteers and staff for their tremendous contribution and commitment over the past year and I look forward to the opportunities and challenges of 2017. Thank you also to our funders, sponsors, donors, stakeholders and other organisations for their tremendous and continuing support.

FREEDOM WHEELS’ REPORT This year we have expanded our connections with other charities, schools, manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers. With shared support we now have assistance with the supply of components, bicycles and component parts for our bikes. Support has come from charities such as Lions, Kiwanis, Rotary, Bikes for Refugees (Adelaide Community Bike Workshop), Glenunga High and Prescott College. A big thank you also goes out to individuals and businesses that have donated money and goods, or returned unused equipment for us to recycle. We would also like to thank employees of Novita, Disability SA and several private Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists, for their continued support during the complexities of the NDIS and mid-year adjustments to their system. The year has brought a wider range of modifications to better meet the needs of the specific and broader ranges of disabilities. With minor design adjustments we have begun delivering professional, reproducible, retrofitted options to complement the standard TAD outriggers and accessories. The offer of a greater variety of options has made the task for volunteers more challenging and complex. We will continue to refine these options to enable easier attachment by all TAD volunteers. Thanks to the continuing support from TADSA Volunteers and staff we have been able to bring the valuable rewards of social inclusion to individuals with a disability, their families, friends and carers. TADSA ACTIVITY

There were 20 project assessments and 137 completed TADSA projects. Our information referral statistics remain an important service where TADSA was able to supply information or reference for clients seeking assistance.

Two volunteers were recruited during the year.

The Freedom Wheels’ program continues to grow with 36 bikes supplied for the year. This program involves attending workshops or clinics, individual prescriptions, ordering, modifying each bike and finally delivering the bike to happy children and their families. Sincere thanks to the very dedicated team of Tony Scully (Freedom Wheels Co-ordinator), Peter Rohde (Freedom Wheels Administrator), Des Chabrel and Wally Wynne.

A SELECTION OF TADSA PROJECTS Castor Cart Over the years TADSA has been asked to build a number of Castor Carts. What's a Castor Cart? It's the first step toward a wheelchair. Lower and smaller than a wheelchair it is easy for small children to get in and out of by themselves, giving them mobility they would not otherwise have. The Carts can also be pushed from behind by parents. TADSA volunteer Dennis McGovern built a Cart for Novita Children’s Services’ short term loan program. Parents can borrow the Cart and if their child likes it, one can be made for them. Dennis is pictured delivering the Cart to Novita's Amy Martin. Metered Drinking Aid What would you do if you couldn't swallow properly and you needed a way to drink? You'd get TADSA to make a drinking aid. Our client could not swallow as normal and so an aid was needed to enable moisture to be given in small doses. TADSA Volunteer Tom Brauer built the device (pictured) which is activated by a Jelly Bean switch and is gravity fed. It can deliver an amount ranging from a teaspoon to a table spoon and can be reactivated by the client every five seconds or more, so as to prevent ‘flooding’.

Parallel Bars What do parents do when their child, who has a disability, needs to use parallel bars as part of their therapy and there are only adult sized bars on the market? They get TADSA to design and build some smaller, child sized bars. An Occupational Therapist from Novita Children’s Services contacted TADSA asking if we could do just that. Not only did the bars need to be smaller but they also had to be able to fold up against a wall to save space. What started out as one project for volunteer Eric Siggurs ended up being three projects for three different clients. Pictured are Stefania using her bars and the bars in folded mode.

Freedom Wheels R&D Sometimes the prefabricated accessories we have available to modify bikes in our Freedom Wheels modified bike program aren’t adequate to enable some children to ride. The outriggers wheels we have available are only suitable for 16”, 20” and 24” bikes. A couple of our Freedom Wheels team, Des Chabrel and Peter Rohde decided to take on the challenge of modifying smaller bikes. We now have outriggers available for 12” bikes. Another challenge for some children is that they are unable to pedal or steer a bike, so again our Freedom Wheels team developed a rear steering device enabling parents/carers to push and steer a bike from behind.

Public Relations’ Officer’s Report

We instinctively know (and sometimes we’re told) that the devices made by TADSA volunteers change people’s lives. In April I was interviewed on ABC Radio's Ashley Walsh program. During the interview a TADSA client rang to talk about a device TADSA built for him 20 years ago. The client, John B., has a degenerative vision impairment which will ultimately cause blindness. In 1995 John decided to train for a career in remedial massage - work which is not sight dependent, so he could continue it as he lost his sight. He contacted TADSA to ask if we could design and build a postural alignment system that would enable him to check hip and shoulder regularity on both sides of a client’s body. The requirement was to set pointers at the hips and shoulders and be able to check the height of each side of the body from floor level.

A tactile system was designed to detect height from the floor in five millimetre increments. This enabled John to detect if there was any misalignment of his client’s body to an accuracy of plus or minus two millimetres- without visually reading the scales. John still uses the system today and has used it every day of his working life for over 20 years. It’s probably fair to say that without this device John wouldn’t have been able to pursue his career in remedial massage. John is pictured left with the device in 1995 and at right in 2016.

This year we began work on a new website, which will be completed in the second part of the new financial year. The new site will have an emphasis on the three areas TADSA needs to continue its service – funding (donations, sponsorship and government), volunteers (recruitment and a volunteers’ only area) and client promotion (with specific sections for children, adults and the aged), as well as Freedom Wheels and the NDIS. We appreciate the assistance of the website developer Kidis Creative. The donation of $5,000 by the Rotary Club of Campbelltown toward the new website is also very much appreciated. The proposed change of our name from Technical Aid to the Disabled SA Inc. to Technology for Ageing and Disability SA Inc. will not only assist us with the marketing of TADSA but also give us a more contemporaneous name. The adding of Ageing to our name reflects the 30% of projects TADSA undertakes for older South Australians, and this figure will only increase as our population ages. The change from Disabled to Disability reflects the decreasing use of the word disabled in the community. We will still have the acronym of TADSA if the change is approved by the membership. As the number of projects TADSA completes for older South Australians does increase and become more critical to the continuation of the TADSA service, it is vital that we promote ourselves to both individuals and aged care facilities. To that end we have started making connections within the aged care sector providing presentations and printed material about the TADSA service. This will ramp up in the New Year. As part of our community engagement this year we approached those Members of Parliament who have electoral offices (i.e. outside of Parliament House) to ask if they would help promote TADSA by displaying our brochures. Twenty seven electoral offices now have brochures available for constituents.

Our connection to local universities also increased this year. Apart from the regular presentation about TADSA services given to Occupational Therapy students at UniSA, we have developed a relationship with Flinders University. Presentations to two groups of Disability & Community Inclusion students were given, as was a presentation to 25 people from Timor-Leste who were in Adelaide on a short course funded by the Australia Awards Fellowships under the auspices of Flinders’ Faculty of Medicine, Nursing and Health Sciences. Another presentation was given to the staff of Flinders Therapy House which is a purpose-designed facility for children living with autism and their families, who have direct access to one of South Australia’s few evidence-based early intervention programs developed by world leading researchers at Flinders University. Many thanks to Alison Fort our pro bono graphic designer since 2008 and Amanda Seacombe our award winning photographer who volunteered for a third year.

Special Events Mini Maker Faire TADSA had a display at the 2015 Mini Maker Faire which was held on November 1st 2015 at Tonsley Park (the old Mitsubishi plant). Over 5,000 people attended the event. The Faire showcases people and organisations that make things - usually handmade. At the end of the event, awards were given out. TADSA was awarded the 'Good Stuff Award' (presumably because we do good stuff). TADSA’s longest serving volunteer Ken Lawson (over 30 years of service) accepted the award on TADSA’s behalf.

Federal Minister Visits

The Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science,

Christopher Pyne (who is also TADSA’s local

Federal member), paid a visit to the TADSA office

in May 2016 to present a 'cheque'. TADSA was

successful with a grant application in the latest

round of Federal Government Volunteer Grants.

The grant for $4,200 is a contribution to the

reimbursement of fuel costs.

TECHNICAL AID TO THE DISABLED (SA) INCORPORATED STATEMENT BY MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The Management Committee of Technical Aid to the Disabled (SA) Incorporated (TADSA) has determined that the Organisation is not a reporting entity and that this special purpose report is prepared in order to satisfy the financial reporting requirements of the Associations Incorporation Act 1985 and the requirements of the constitution of TADSA and its members. In the opinion of the Management Committee, the financial report: 1. (a) Presents fairly the financial position of TADSA for the year ended 30

th June 2016.

(b) At the date of this statement there are reasonable grounds to believe that TADSA will be able to pay its debts as and when they fall due. 2. Since the end of the previous financial year no officer of TADSA, no firm of which an officer is a member, and no body corporate in which

an officer has a substantial financial interest, has received or become entitled to receive any benefit as a result of a contract between the officer, firm or body corporate and TADSA.
