CHICKEN OR EGG
T he second reading of Paul to the Ephesians talks about forgiving one another. It reminds me of the line in the Lord's Prayer, "Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us." (Matthew 6:12) You could read that line as a warning that God only forgives those who forgive
others. Paul reverses that conditional meaning to say that we forgive because God has already forgiven us. So which came first, the chicken or the egg?
In a sense, both are needed: Jesus died on the cross to show that God forgives sins you haven't even committed yet. But God does not force his forgiveness on us. It is a gift, given freely. We have to want to be forgiven and accept that gift from God. And we also have to be willing to forgive those who have hurt us. There are many ways to do that.
One is to forgive in your heart. That's usually easy to do for someone you love. You know they didn't mean to hurt you and so you don't get angry at them. And if you truly forgive, you won't be thinking of how that person owes you for the hurt and what you can get from them. If you don't love the one who hurt you, you still need to forgive, so you can let go of the hurt. (And be forgiven for not loving your neighbor!)
Paul also tells us to let go of bitterness, anger, and shouting. Instead of getting even, we are told to be kind and compassionate (Ephesians 4:32.) We can go to the next step after forgiving in our hearts: We show our forgiveness in our actions. A friend or relative might get a hug; others might get a handshake or words of forgiveness. If the one who hurt you insists on making up for it, accept their gift graciously and remind them that they are forgiven; they may need to make reparation so they can forgive themselves.
Jesus showed how much God wants to forgive us by his death on the cross. Because we are forgiven, we are then able to forgive others. So while God's love and forgiveness are always first, we must be able to forgive others so that we can accept it from God.

CIVIL DISCOURSE “Do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God.” These words bring us up short! What could we be doing to
grieve the Holy Spirit? Alas, the same things that the Ephesians were doing in the time of Paul, that is, fighting, shouting, reviling each other with fury, anger, and malice. Just tune in to talk radio some day or observe some “road rage” on the expressway. If we who are partakers of the Body of Christ can treat one another this way, what does that mean about our belief in Christ’s message of peace and reconciliation? The Eucharist is the sacrament of unity. It is communion with God and with each other. A good first step would be to speak civilly to each other, even in disagreement!
TODAY’S READINGS: FIRST READING — After resting and taking nourishment twice, Elijah is strengthened to walk to the
mountain of God, Horeb (1 Kings 19:4-8). RESPONSORIAL PSALM — Taste and see the goodness of the Lord (Psalm 34). SECOND READING — Be sealed by the Holy Spirit of God so as to be imitators of God and live in love
(Ephesians 4:30 — 5:2). GOSPEL — Jesus professes that he is the living bread and whoever eats this bread will live forever
(John 6:41-51).

POLLO O HUEVO
L a segunda lectura de Pablo a los Efesios habla de perdonarse unos a otros. Me recuerda la línea del Padrenuestro: "Perdónanos nuestras ofensas como nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden". (Mateo 6, 12.) Podría leer esa línea como una advertencia de que Dios solo perdona a los que perdonan a los
demás. Pablo invierte ese significado condicional para decir que perdonamos porque Dios ya nos ha perdonado. Entonces, ¿qué fue primero, el huevo o la gallina?
En cierto sentido, ambos son necesarios: Jesús murió en la cruz para mostrar que Dios perdona los pecados que aún no has cometido. Pero Dios no nos obliga a perdonarnos. Es un regalo que se da gratuitamente. Tenemos que querer ser perdonados y aceptar ese regalo de Dios. Y también tenemos que estar dispuestos a perdonar a quienes nos han hecho daño. Hay muchas formas de hacerlo.
Uno es perdonar en tu corazón. Por lo general, eso es fácil de hacer para alguien que amas. Sabes que no pretendían hacerte daño y, por lo tanto, no te enojas con ellos. Y si realmente perdonas, no pensarás en cómo esa persona te debe el dolor y lo que puedes obtener de ellos. Si no amas a la persona que te lastimó, aún necesitas perdonar, para que puedas dejar ir el dolor. (¡Y ser perdonado por no amar a tu prójimo!)
Pablo también nos dice que dejemos de lado la amargura, la ira y los gritos. En lugar de vengarnos, se nos dice que seamos amables y compasivos (Efesios 4, 32). Podemos ir al siguiente paso después de perdonar en nuestro corazón: mostramos nuestro perdón en nuestras acciones. Un amigo o familiar puede recibir un abrazo; otros pueden recibir un apretón de manos o palabras de perdón. Si el que te lastimó insiste en compensarlo, acepta su regalo con gentileza y recuérdale que está perdonado; es posible que necesiten hacer una reparación para poder perdonarse a sí mismos.
Jesús mostró cuánto quiere Dios perdonarnos con su muerte en la cruz. Debido a que somos perdonados, podemos perdonar a los demás. Entonces, si bien el amor y el perdón de Dios siempre son lo primero, debemos poder perdonar a los demás para que podamos aceptarlo de parte de Dios.

DISCURSO CIVIL “No le causen tristeza al Espíritu Santo”. ¡Estas palabras nos hacen prestar atención! ¿Qué podríamos estar
haciendo para entristecer al Espíritu Santo? Por desgracia, las mismas cosas de las que los efesios eran culpables, en tiempos de Pablo, es decir, pleitos, asperezas, ira, insultos, enojos y maldad. Solo tienes que sintonizar la radio u observar la “violencia vehicular” en las autopistas. Si nosotros, que somos partícipes del Cuerpo de Cristo, podemos tratarnos unos a otros de esta manera, ¿qué significa eso acerca de nuestra fe en el mensaje de Cristo sobre la paz y la reconciliación? La Eucaristía es el sacramento de la unidad. Es la comunión con Dios y de unos con otros. Un buen primer paso sería hablar cortésmente unos con otros, ¡hasta en los desacuerdos!
