“Together We Aim Higher”

Principal Message

Aloha Waikele Ohana,

It has been an exciting and busy January with a number of wonderful new activities planned for the month of

February. Our teachers are continuing to apply their instructional knowledge and skills in the classroom to

provide students with teaching and learning which is rigorous and relevant. Additionally, students will have the

opportunity to participate in a number of engaging activities outside of the classroom, helping to foster their

overall growth.

Meadow Gold Hawaii will help to kickoff our Jump Rope for Heart Campaign with an exciting assembly full of

dance and song for our students on February 4th. Jump Rope for Heart is an American Heart Association

sponsored fundraising campaign that promotes healthy eating and regular physical activity. This fundraising

campaign will run for two weeks from February 5th to February 19th. Our NSSC naval partners are helping to

organize field days during recess on February 10th and 17th to coincide with this event.

Beginning Wednesday February 3rd, our PCNC will begin hosting a once every other week “1 Cup Wednesday”

in front of Hale Hanai @ 7:30AM. This informal get together will provide an opportunity for our Waikele

families, community members, teachers, and administrators to meet and talk story while enjoying some hot

coffee and simple snacks.

Finally, in anticipation of our upcoming First Annual Cha Cha Challenge Obstacle Fun Run in April, we are

holding a T-Shirt Design Contest celebrating this event. Our goal is to provide every single student a FREE

shirt, so please make sure to have your child turn in their order forms to their teacher ASAP.

I would like to wish our students, parents, staff, and community a great month as we continue our journey this

semester.

Sincerely,

Nathan Maeda

Vice Principal

Enrichment Explorers Explore

The 6th grade Enrichment Explorers, along with

their Enrichment teacher took on the challenge and

embarked on a new journey with the SeaPerch

underwater robotics program.

“Building a SeaPerch ROV teaches basic skills in

ship and submarine design and encourages students

to explore naval architecture and marine and ocean

engineering principles. It also teaches basic science

and engineering concepts and tool safety and

technical procedures. Students learn important

engineering and design skills and are exposed to all

the exciting careers that are possible in naval

architecture and naval, ocean, and marine

engineering” (SeaPerch, 2013).

The class had wonderful support from our NSSC

(Naval Submarine Support Center) military

partner, and welcomed Petty Officer DiBlasi. He

has been a huge help during the process, and he will

be missed as his last class will be on February 1st.

We thank him for his service and wish him the best

in all of his future endeavors.
