“Together We Aim Higher”
Principal Message
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! The Holiday season is upon us and I am sure that it is a busy and
festive time for you all. With the arrival of the season, our music teacher has been engaging all of the children
through integrated music and dance lessons. The students are learning and having fun, and our second quarter
“Winter Musical” courtyard celebration will reflect that.
The Family Focus is a monthly bulletin to highlight the many accomplishments, reminders, sharing of our
attitude of gratitude, and the exciting up-coming events. All of this is crafted and coordinated by our
outstanding PCNC Facilitator, Mrs. Kiana Moore.
As we close 2015 together, I want to say thank you for working with us to develop and maintain a strong home-
school partnership! We remain committed to provide a relevant and rigorous education assuring all students are
college, career, and citizenship ready through the effective use of standards-based instruction promoting 21st
century learning skills.
Finally, I would like to wish our students, our parents, our staff and the community Seasons Greetings filled
with joy and family. May you have a happy and healthy 2016.
Sincerely,
Sheldon Oshio
Principal

Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System
(Also known as MS4)
When it rains, pollution such as litter, pesticides and
household chemicals eventually end up in the
ocean. This affects all of us because water is
essential for life here in Hawai'i and we spend a lot
of time playing in the ocean or eating seafood. As a
community, we can work together to make sure that
our water resources are protected. We have
provided some information about water pollution
and things we can do to prevent water
pollution. Please visit Waikele Elementary School's
website for more information under
theNPDES (National Pollutant Discharge
Elimination
System) Notice: http://www.waikelees.org/
Health and Wellbeing
Research shows that school success and student
health are interrelated. We believe that healthy
students are better able to learn and that a healthy
lifestyle should be encouraged in schools. Teachers
provide physical education lessons and students
have to opportunity to play during recess. Teachers
also provide learning opportunities for students in
other health related areas both in and out of the
classroom.
Parents can support students by making sure that
students eat a good breakfast and lunch every day.
Our cafeteria provides warm meals that meet the
USDA requirements for a healthy serving. Students
should also be encouraged to bring healthy snacks.
Eat Healthy!
Here is a list of suggested healthy snacks or
birthday treats (no peanuts): • Fruit or veggie sticks
• Pretzels • Mix together dry cereal • Plain popcorn
• Trail mix or granola bars • Low-fat cheese •
Veggie chips/straws • Yogurt/ Gogurt • Baked
chips/ crackers • Dried fruit • Arare/ Rice crackers

Waikele Broadcasting Warriors (WBW)
Highlight
Members of the Waikele Broadcasting Warriors
got an opportunity of a lifetime to visit the Hawaii
News Now News Station. They were taken on a
personal tour of the entire station, including the
control room, the audio control room, and the
studio. The students learned about what goes into
producing a live news show, and how much team
work is needed for it to be successful.
Along with talking to the producers of the show, the
students even got to meet a few of the faces of the
HNN team and were star struck when they met
Grace Lee, Steve Uyehara and Lacy Deniz.
Everyone at the news station were encouraging, and
they gave great advice about working hard in school
and to follow their dreams. WBW would like to
thank the entire HNN team for their time and
amazing hospitality.

The 5th graders participated with the Honolulu
Police Department D.A.R.E. (Drug Abuse
Resistance Education) program. Officer Marlo
Romualdo taught the students the Decision Making
Model (Define, Assess, Respond, Evaluate) to help
them learn how to make safe and responsible
choices. After 10 interesting, intensive sessions, all
the 5th graders received a certificate of achievement
for successfully completing the Dare Abuse
Resistance Education core curriculum and making a
personal commitment to avoid the pressures of
using drugs.
