Purpose of Information Session

• Provide information pertaining to the admissions process for the Dental Assisting and Dental Hygiene programs.

• Both programs are competitive and have a limited number of enrollment each year.

Student Services

Dental Assisting Dental Hygiene

Diploma - 3 semesters

- Starts in Fall, full-time day program

- Graduate as a DA II

- Can sit for DANB certification - CDA

Various clinical settings in Spring & Summer

- Chapel Hill 2 days/week for 10 weeks

- Over 300 hours hands-on training

Duties include :

taking x-rays, taking impressions, controlling supplies, making temporary crowns

Associate degree (A.A.S) - 5 semesters

- Starts in Fall, full-time day program

- Eligible for state licensure – R.D.H.

- National and state exam

On-site 25 chair clinic

Start seeing patients in the first semester

Duties include:

Cleaning teeth, perform oral health assessments, provide oral health instructions

FYI - Finding Patients• Dental Assistants need patients for x-rays; Hygienists

need patients for x-rays and cleanings.

• It is the students’ responsibility to ensure that enough patients are scheduled to meet minimum requirements for clinic. Quotas are assigned for each semester and are included in the syllabus for each clinical course.

The Dental Clinic maintains a list of perspective patients to assist the students in finding acceptable patients.

– Be prepared for cancellations

– Try to schedule reliable, responsible patients

FYI – Background Check

• The North Carolina Board of Dental Examiners may request information regarding conviction of a felony and/or misdemeanor and/or current charges on the application for licensure and may decide not to license an individual based on the results of an investigation.– Only talks with graduates of dental hygiene programs but feel free to

check ahead of time.

FYI from the Department Heads

– These are health service jobs. So, hopefully you have a desire to help people.

– Expect stress, both physically & mentally. (Technical Standards form)

• Physically demanding - Back, shoulders, and wrists.

• Stress with patient interactions, evaluations

– You will see blood.

– It is difficult to work while attending the program. Students who work

usually have flexible job schedules or work only during the weekends.

– Balancing school and family is difficult!

– If you are accepted or an alternate to the clinical program, attendance at

the orientation is MANDATORY – no exceptions.

• DH – usually in April; DA – usually in June or early July

– please do not plan vacations during these times

Admission is a 2 Step Process

• First step - apply to Wake Tech– This allows you to take Gen Ed classes

– You can take Gen ED classes any semester

• Second step - apply to the Dental Clinical classes– If accepted, this is when you can take

the DEN classes

– DEN classes only begin in Fall

Applying to Wake Techas a Pre-Dental Student

1. Fill out a Wake Tech Application

2. Attend an Information Session

- If not enrolled for over a year, will need to attend a new one

3. Submit all official transcripts

4. Take placement test, if needed

Official Transcripts

• If you list the school on your application, you must provide Wake Tech with an official transcript – high school and college.– Official means they come from the actual school in a sealed envelope.

– If sent to you, do NOT open them

• Transcripts will be unofficially evaluated by a Health Sciences advisor.

Verify Reading, Writing, and Math levels-To meet minimum admissions requirements, everything must be within the past 5 years.

The only item that can be MORE than 5 years old is the College English class.

Placement Testing

• An application must be on file prior to testing

• Prepare and register for test through WTCC’s testing website: testingcenter.waketech.edu

• Our placement test is called the ACCUPLACER

• Tested on Reading, Writing, and Math

• It is not pass/fail.

• Test scores have a 5 year time limit

• There is no fee to take the test the first time.

• You may retest once within a year.

• Retest fee is $10.

• Must wait 7 days to retest.

First Time in College?

• If this is your first time attending college, there is a mandatory new student orientation which will prepare you for your first semester at Wake Tech.

• Receive info on student email, ID’s, parking, class registration, financial aid, etc.

• The orientation is available online or seated.

• Sign up at orientation.waketech.edu

Step 1 is Now Complete!You are a Pre-Dental Student

• Once you have completed the Step 1 requirements, you can be accepted to Wake Tech as a pre-dental student.

• Once accepted, you can register for classes.

• What classes can you register for?

Pre-Curriculum Classes

• Not on your curriculum (example: DRE 097)

• Based on placement test scores(May or may not have to take)

• Offered day and evening

• Taught at most of our campuses• Not at Perry Health Science Campus

• Five year time limit for admissions

General Education Classes

• Dental Assisting:– ENG 111, COM 120, PSY 118 (or PSY 150)

• Dental Hygiene:– COM 120, ENG 111, HUM elective, PSY 150, SOC 210

• HUM elective: Includes 3 credits of ART (art), MUS (music), DRA (drama), PHI (philosophy), REL (religion), or HUM(humanities)

• NOT SPA, FRE, HIS, etc.

• No time limit for transferability

Registering for Classes

eLearning Intro: Want to take a course online?

Students will be able to register for online courses at Wake Tech after completing the eLearning Intro through Blackboard.

– eLearning is an online assessment to determine a student’s readiness for taking an online course

– It is made up of three modules; Basic Computer Skills, Expectation Management, and Blackboard Boot Camp.

– You may take the eLearning Intro at any time in your Blackboard account prior to registering for an online course.

Classes at Other Colleges• Equivalent classes

– All NC Community Colleges are the same (Common course library)

– Other Colleges / Universities:

• BIOs MUST have labs

• Courses must be the same number of credit hours and have a comparable course syllabus

• Check with a WTCC advisor first before signing up

What CAN’T you Register for?

• The Clinical classes – the DEN classes

– This is Step 2 of the Admissions Process

– Can NOT take – Competitive admissions

– Taught at the Perry Health Science campus only

– Must maintain a “C” in all classes to progress

Minimum Admissions Requirements

A student will be ineligible to apply to the clinical program if any of these requirements are missing.

• Complete Wake Tech application

• Submit all official transcripts

• Proficiencies must be met:

• Reading/English

• Math• DMA 010, 020, 030 for DA

• DMA 010, 020, 030, 040 for DH

• Chemistry (Dental Hygiene only)

• 40 Hours of Job Shadowing (DH only)

Chemistry Proficiency for Dental Hygiene

• The chemistry proficiency does NOT have an age limit.

• High school chemistry must be one full unit of chemistry with a “C” or better. High school chemistry does NOTmeet CHM 130 requirements and cannot be used for points

• CHM 130 MUST be a college-level chemistry class taken within the past 5 years. • Example: if you had CHM 111 at NC State:

– in 2014 – it meets BOTH admissions and CHM 130 requirements

– In 2009 – it only meets proficiency and cannot be included in the competitive point total

Job Shadowing:Dental Hygiene Only

– Need 40 hrs of Job Shadowing prior to applying to clinical program

– Dress professionally

• May have to wear scrubs

• 40 hours of job shadowing verification

• Health Care exp. or Dental Assisting exp. in the past 5 years – (only if it pertains to you)

• Technical standards form with student’s signature – (A physician’s signature is not required)

Competitive Clinical Entry

• Only those students who turn in the Dental application will be

considered for the DEN classes

• Applications must be resubmitted on a yearly basis.

• Competitive entry based on points (not a waitlist)

Dental Assisting – 28-30 students per year

Dental Hygiene – 24 students per year

• Points are calculated at the time the clinical applications are

due (as of January 31 for Dental Hygiene and as of May 15

for Dental Assisting). Courses completed after these dates

will not be included in the total points calculation.

Competitive Entry – Point Values

• Acceptance is based on points. Students with the MOST points

are accepted into the DEN classes.

• Grades are given the following points:

– “A” = 4, “B” = 3, “C” = 2

• The point value of the grade is multiplied by the credit hours of

the class, and this equals the point total. Technical Core

(Science) courses are doubled.

Ways to Lose Points“D” or “F” grade policy

Dental Hygiene only

• Five points will be subtracted from the quality points for grades of “D” and ten points for grades of “F” received in any of the non-clinical courses within 5 years of the application date.

• For Technical core courses, the point reductions will be doubled (10 points for a “D”, and 20 points for an “F”).

• Negative points stay on your ranking sheet until the class is more than 5 years old.

• Negative points are also given for “WF”.

– A letter of explanation from the program director

• Up to 20 points may be deducted from the total quality points

Extra Points: Dental Assisting Only

If you take BIO 163 AND BIO 175 in place of BIO 106,

you will receive an extra 10 points in addition to the points

for the grade (Class points are awarded based on BIO 106 and not 163/175)

If you take DEN 100 and/or DEN 111 prior to the

application deadline, you can receive points for the grade:

A=5, B=4, C=3
