FRIDAY 17TH APRIL

Tresco/Bryher – The Channel Crossing – Scilly Style*

On extreme low tides, the channel

between Tresco and Bryher dries out

to such an extent that it is possible to

walk between the two. Indeed many

local residents use this opportunity to

travel between the two islands – either

to ‘pop’ to the shop or to move items

of equipment between the two. This

walk gives you the opportunity to do

something that most walking festivals

can never offer – to walk on the

seabed between two islands. Take the

opportunity to search for Razor Fish,

to marvel at myriad seabirds making

the most of this low tide feast or simply

enjoy the (slightly surreal) experience.

A short break and a hot chocolate will

await you on Bryher before you race

the tide back across the channel!

St. Agnes – Scilly Through the Eyes of a Scillonian

The name Hicks is synonymous with

St. Agnes. Generations of the Hicks

family have farmed, fished and made

a living on St. Agnes, the most remote

of all of the inhabited islands that make

up Scilly. Join father and son duo Tim

and Sam as they show you around

their island home, and seek out points

of interest known only to those who

were born and raised on these shores.

Have a look at their island farm and

sample their renowned ice cream

made from the milk of their small dairy

herd. If you really want to get under

the skin of Scilly then this walk is for

you. This walk will stop for lunch at

Coastguards Café. Please wear sturdy

footwear. Dogs welcome on leads.

Grade: 3

Max people: 25

Price: £7.50

Start: The boat leaves St. Mary’s at

8.30am for a 9.45am start on Tresco

Finish 11.30am(ish) on Tresco

Guide: Alasdair Moore & Amanda Pender

Meet: The Flying Boat Club, Tresco

Note: Please wear suitable clothing and be

prepared to roll up your trousers! By the very

nature of this walk you will get wet feet. You will

be accompanied on this walk by two guides.

Please note this walk is weather permitting.

St. Agnes – Land, Sea & Air

Learn about the Isles of Scilly Seabird

Recovery Project, and the remarkable

work being done to preserve declining

numbers of native seabirds that have

traditionally made their home in Scilly

– including the sirens of the sea, Manx

Shearwaters. See where they nest

whilst looking out for all manner of

wildlife along the way! After stopping

for lunch, your adventure will continue

on the water on board the ‘Spirit of

St. Agnes’ as you venture out along

with your guide to the Western Rocks

to look out for more seabirds, marine

life and to generally soak up some

of the most remote yet spectacular

scenery that Scilly has to offer.

SUPPORTERS

Walk Scilly 2015 has been organised

by the Islands’ Tourism & Business

Partnership and supported by The

Council of the Isles of Scilly and the

Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, Tanglewood

Kitchen, St. Mary’s Boatmans’

Association and Hell Bay Hotel.

THE ISLES OF SCILLY WILDLIFE TRUST WELCOMES WALK SCILLY

There is a wealth of wildlife just

waiting to be discovered on Isles of

Scilly Wildlife Trust land and a network

of footpaths and tracks to explore.

But before you go... Did you know

• The Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust

cares for 60% of Scilly – that is one

big nature reserve.

• We have some very rare inhabitants

such as Scilly shrews, the Scilly Bee,

nesting Storm Petrels, the Dwarf

Pansy, Orange Birdsfoot and a

marine species known as the Orange

Peel Bryozoan.

• Not only can you find a variety of

wildlife; you can discover remains

left by Scilly’s prehistoric inhabitants

with ancient settlements, field

boundary walls and burial chambers

and more recent remains like kelp

pits and gig sheds. Scilly’s military

history also has a strong presence in

the landscape.

• Please support our work by

volunteering, becoming a member

and giving a donation.

Boating

Please check the times of walks when

booking. Return boat times will be

given out on the boat – if in doubt

ask your guide. Please note the listed

walks do not include the cost of any

boat fares that may be required.

Discounted boat tickets can be

purchased during Walk Scilly week at

the Tourist Information Centre (TIC)

at Porthcressa, St. Mary’s.

Horse Riding

Anyone taking part in Walk Scilly will

receive a £5 discount off the price of

any of the ride offered by St. Mary’s

Riding Centre between Monday and

Friday of Walk Scilly Week.

Other stuff

Some walks are jam packed with

information so a little notebook may

make sense as will a sketchbook on

some. And of course water or coffee

or tea or a beer, gin and tonic or crème

de menthe frappe – whatever takes

your fancy as you tick off the yards.

Dogs

Many walks are suitable for

accompaniment by our four legged

friends but on others that could

prove tricky; those where we would

have no problem having them along

indicate this specifically. If you are not

sure just ask.
