Good afternoon ladies and gentlemen, and welcome to Cricklefields for this FA Cup Second Qualifying Round match with Hampton and Richmond Borough. We hope their supporters, players and officials have a pleasant stay with us, and a safe journey home. We also extend a warm welcome to our team of match officials today. Suffice to say that our match Tuesday evening did not quite go to plan. We started brilliantly, and took a deserved lead, but as with the match with Cheshunt, our second half performance was someway short of what we have begun to expect since the start of the season. Maldon & Tiptree will no doubt be challengers for a play-off place this season - if not more, but the way in which we crumbled away was disappointing. In truth, Maldon should have won the game about 8-7,
such was the number of chances being spurred by both sides. Going back a good few years, I can't remember a match which was played at such a frantic pace. It really was relentless. When we played Eastbourne Borough at this stage of the Cup last year, we went into the match having just enjoyed a 3-1 victory over Chatham Town. This time around, we will be playing on the back of a defeat, but I am sure the players will be looking to bounce back. This week I stumbled across the FA's Player of The Round award for the First Qualifying Round of the FA Cup. When I say stumbled, it was just by chance that I saw it on Twitter. I checked the FA Cup mini-site a few days after the round had been completed and there was no mention of the award. There were only five players to choose from, and the winner, Scott Murray was nominated for scoring a hat trick for Clevedon Town against Sherborne Town. Sherborne Town of the First Division of the Western League! We beat a team top of the division above us 5-2, and we don't even get a nomination. The FA Cup mini-site itself pointed out that our result was one of the results of the round, and yet

none of our players - even Corey Whitely who scored twice - even gets a mention. I know most of us here have long since given up on getting any recognition from people outside of our division (and that’s hard enough), but we go on in the hope that one day someone might take notice. Just the one plug this week - and for once, it’s not for something that I have a part in. Stand Against Modern Football is a new fanzine, and as the name suggests, its aim is to make the supporters' voices heard in a world where they are being drowned out more and more. Despite the name and concept, it isn't just a bunch of blokes moaning about the 'good old days' (though there is a far bit of moaning, I must admit). It goes to show that for all the hype around the modern game, there are still a lot of people who want to stand up for what they believe for should be. It is only two quid an issue, and available from standamf.tumblr.com. Give it a go, you won't regret it. Good luck today lads.

mIdweeK round-upThree goals in the last nine minutes propelled Maldon to the top of Ryman North with a 5-2 home win over Waltham Forest on Tuesday. The visitors took the lead through Cory Whitely in the 19th minute and, after Jamie Guy levelled for the hosts on the stroke of half-time, Joel Palmer restored Forest’s advantage immediately after the restart.James Robinson squared it again on the hour and a final flourish from Guy, Dave Wareham and Ollie Berquez lifted Maldon into first place.Grays moved up to second after a comfortable 3-0 home win over Heybridge. All the damage was done by halftime, with Joe Sweeney’s 15th-minute opener being followed up by James Bunn (27 minutes) and Jake Hall (41). Unbeaten Potters Bar climbed to fifth with a 2-0 victory at Redbridge. It was a much-improved performance by the Motormen, who had conceded
16 goals in their three previous home games. James Gershfield’s penalty on the half-hour was all that separated the sides until Daniel Ailey finished off a fine move in the 87th minute. He became only the second Scholar to score a league goal this season: Gershfield had netted six of their previous seven, the other being an own goal.Sudbury’s disappointing start to the season continued on Wednesday when they were unable to hold on to a lead and had to settle for a 1-1 draw at Ilford.Bradley Thomas headed home a corner to put the visitors in front in the 25th minute, and they had the pick of the chances after that only to find Ilford keeper Marc Rose was in top form.Rose was rewarded on 69 minutes when Jan Skoniezki forced home the equaliser, also from a corner, and that was enough to earn the Foxes a point from a spirited display.

whIte departSCourtney White has this week left Forest and returned to Billericay Town, his parent club. This loan spell was White's second with us, scoring twice in the five appearances he made. His starts were limited - especially throughout the month of October - as Billericay asked that he would not play in any FA competitions to ensure he would not be cup-tied. Given the recent relationship between Forest and 'Ricay, it is likely that we have not yet seen the last of White.
thomaS SIgneS upDuring the week, Wale Ojelabi completed the signing of Hayes Thomas, an exciting forward prospect who has most recently been with the
Sailsbury City youth team. He was an unused substitute against Maldon & Tiptree in the week, and should be in the squad for today's fixture with Hampton & Richmond.
oSeI maKeS leISton moveEmmanuel Osei has left Ryman League Division One North club Waltham Abbey to join Ryman Premier Division side Leiston. Osei began his career in 2001 with Ghanaian regional club Echomog and moved to Suhum Maxbees of the Poly Tank Division One League a year later. He played for his third team in as many years in 2003, after transferring to Accra Hearts of Oak SC, before moving to Turkey to play for Akçaabat Sebatspor also in that year. In 2004/05, Osei joined AS Livorno Calcio of Italy`s Serie A, going much unnoticed for the majority of the season. He was eventually released by Livorno, and, after a brief spell in Germany with amateurs ASV Cham, returned to his country to play in the top level, representing in quick succession Wa All Stars and Liberty Professionals. On March 2009, Osei signed with Major League Soccer's New England Revolution before leaving in January 2011 to come to England.

Waltham Forest left Maldon wondering how they ended up losing a match 5-2, after leading twice. It was a pulsating encounter, where both sides forgot about their defensive responsibilities in search of goals. Forest started the match the brighter of the two sides, and dominated the opening proceedings with Adrian Clifton going closet, but not quite getting enough on a Manu Dagher cross. At the other end, Chris Bryan went close for Maldon, forcing shooting wide after bringing the ball down in the box. With just under half an hour played, Forest took the lead with a good counter-attacking move. Luke Stanley was allowed to run through midfield, and he laid the ball out wide for Dagher. Dagher’s cross was low and deep to Corey Whitely who fired into the back of the net from just inside the box. Soon after, it appeared that James Robinson kicked out at Stanley while he was on the ground. Robinson was given a talking to by the referee, but nothing else. Aaron Omand was called into action more and more towards the end of the half, keeping Maldon out twice from close-range and then repeating the same feat minutes later. On the stroke of half time, the home side levelled. A deep cross was knocked back into the centre of the goal at the back post and Jamie Guy made no mistake with the header. Just like in Forest’s match with Hemel Hempstead, Forest took the lead within seconds of the re-start. Manu Dagher’s cross was met by Joel
Palmer whose shot eventually found the back of the net after taking a deflection. Maldon then enjoyed a long spell of possession, but without really creating anything. That was, until they levelled the scores again, James Robinson knocking the ball in from close range. It was an end-to-end match, and Jamie Guy was guilty of missing two clear-cut chances for the home side, both with the goal at his mercy from about a yard out. Forest did manage to counter attack, and Joel Palmer could have scored but his header was aimed straight at Joe Wright in the Maldon goal. The came the turning point of the match. Jamie Guy thought he had scored, only for the linesman to rule out his goal for off-side. However, after discussion with the linesman, the referee overturned his original decision and awarded the goal. From then on, the flood-gates opened, and Maldon scored twice in the dying embers of the match through Dave Wareham and Ollie Berquez.
Cheshunt 1-3 waltham Forest,Saturday 15th SeptemberWaltham Forest made it into the First Qualifying Round of the FA Trophy with a solid team performance against Cheshunt, in an encounter which had a strange ‘end-of-season’ air about it. Forest named an unchaged side, and forced seven corners within the first half an hour, all of which came to nothing. Dimitri Larin went
Match actionclose, flicking on a free-kick from Inaki Ordono, while Adrian Clifton should have done better after Corey Whitely squared the ball back to him. Forest broke the deadlock on 34. Luke Stanley’s corner was not dealt with by the home defence, and after some bouncing around the box, Clifton bundled the ball into the goal. Minutes later and Forest doubled their advantage. Whitely looked to have overhit his cross from the right wing, but it dropped to Luke Stanley at the back post whose looping header found the top corner of the goal. Just before the break, Ordono went close, having his effort tipped over the post by Obey Morfeu in the Cheshunt goal. Forest continued to dominate at the start of the second half, but they switched off at the back, allowing veteran striker Leon Archer to score from close range. Adrian Clifton restored Forest’s advantage with his second of the game. He was put in by Whitely and while his first effort was parried by Morfeu, he was able to put the rebound away from a tight angle. Arian Retkoceri went close from long range for Forest, having his shot blocked on its way to goal, just before the 90. And in the dying moments of the game, Ivni Islami had a golden opportunity to score Forest’s goal. He was fed through on goal, before he rounded the ‘keeper, beat a defender and then contrived to miss the target - by some considerable distance - from all of six yards.

Forest v Hampton & Richmond Borough - Page 12
“ “Today we are back on the glory trail, as we entertain Hampton & Richmond Borough in the FA Cup and look to cause another cup “shock” after our disposal of Hemel Hempstead in the last round, away from home. Hampton are now back in the Ryman Premier, after relegation last season from the Conference South, but, have made a statement of intent in their excellent start to the season, where, up until last Saturday, they had not conceded a goal. But, a one all draw robbed them of that record and also lost them top spot, but, only on goal difference to Margate. If Hampton suffered a slight hiccup on Saturday, that was nothing to what we experienced on Tuesday at Maldon & Tiptree, when we came back down to earth with a resounding bump and lost by five goals to two.
It was incredibly disappointing, given that we took the lead for a second time, just after the restart and although, the third Maldon goal, which gave them the lead for the first time in the match, was probably the turning point (all hinging on the referee changing his mind and the decision, after firstly disallowing it for offside), they had also contrived to miss two other excellent chances before then. That defeat stopped our five game unbeaten run going any further and dropped us down the table, to a place just above the relegation zone. I know it is early days yet to be worrying about the league table, but, I would hate to see us, literally, take our eye off the ball and find that when we are finally out of the FA Cup & FA Trophy (which hopefully, won’t be for a while yet), we are involved in issues at the wrong end of the table. I doubt if wale will be carrying out a major overhaul of the side today, despite the setback on Tuesday, as I think everyone is agreed, that Maldon will certainly be in the mix for the play off places at the end of the season. Even if he wanted to, there is only a limited number of

changes he could make, due to our very small squad, but, that may not necessarily be a bad thing, in the long run. Even though we got caught out at Maldon, the spirit and enthusiasm of the side prior to that, not to mention the attractive attacking football we have been playing, was a joy to behold and I think the lads should be given the chance to redeem themselves today. Looking at the make-up of the team, we have a very large proportion of young players in the side. We do of course; have the vast experience of Matt Waldron, who I look upon as the Godfather of the team. I mean that in the parental, arm around the shoulder, giving good advice and guidance, type of Godfather, not, the Marlon Brando, “I’ll make you an offer you can’t refuse” & “Tonight you sleep with the fishes” type of Godfather. Mind you, after last Tuesday’s effort, perhaps he should take the latter approach, rather than the former. We have brought very young players in to the squad that season, in players like Corey/Tom/Dave/Ben & Dmitri – none of whom, have any experience of playing in the Ryman League
Forest v Hampton & Richmond Borough - Page 13
on a regular basis To that number, we can now add Hayes Thomas, who was at Salisbury City, playing in their youth and reserve sides. He was on the bench on Tuesday and we welcome him to the club. If he can make the sort of impact that both Corey and Tom have made when given their chances, then he should be worth keeping an eye on. When you have a small squad of players, like us and the backup are mainly young, in experienced players, there is always going to be some sort of inconsistency and that has to
be expected and from time to time, we will probably see us let ourselves down and fall to defeats that, perhaps we were not expecting. But, I believe, overall, this squad is good enough to hold a mid-table position and not have to worry about being at the wrong end of the table. However, today, we can forget all about league issues and concentrate on getting past Hampton to collect some more, much needed, revenue from the FA (we seem to have been giving them enough in fines over the years, about time we got some back).
I hope that we can settle down quickly today, play our free flowing game (despite the well-known problems with our pitch) and give our opponents, something to think about. Whether the final score today, I just want us to go out and be competitive and show our higher ranked opponents that we are not going to give up our FA Cup run without a fight.

Forest v Hampton & Richmond Borough - Page 16
Forest v Hampton & Richmond Borough - Page 17
“ “On the 22nd of April this year the match between Genoa and Siena was famously held up after a group of the home club’s Ultra supporters, irate at their teams abject performance, began to throw objects onto the pitch. With Genoa trailing 4-0 the fans imprisoned the team on the field by blocking their entrance to the tunnel and, once the referee had suspended play, demanded the Genoa players remove their shirts and hand them over as they felt them not fit to wear them. Most players complied and it took the negotiating skills of midfielder Giuseppe Sculli to get the shirts returned so play could continue. On the 2nd of July this year on the message-board of an unofficial Macclesfield Town website a few of the clubs Ultra supporters debated, in the language of excitable children, whether or not they would be sneaking a flare into the Stockport County ground during the Silkmens away fixture there this coming Tuesday. In the late 1960's Italian
clubs Sampdoria and Torino were amongst the first to use the label with the creation of their ‘Ultras Tito Cucchiaroni’ and ‘Ultras Granata’ groups. During the 1970's the movement spread across Italy as more Ultra groups were born and their influence within their parent club increased. By the 80's and 90's the movement had started to spread out across Europe into countries such as Germany and the Netherlands and the power wielded by such groups meant they could negotiate cheaper tickets and early access into the stadiums in order to prepare their displays. By the 2000's Ultra supporters groups were predominant at major clubs across Europe with a vocal minority having ties amongst hooliganism and a preference shown towards largely right-wing ideologies. In Britain the emergence of Ultra groups seems to be a phenomena almost exclusive to clubs further down the football chain. The likes of York, Oxford, Aldershot, and even Barrow have all formed their own versions amongst their support that, in fairness, tend to stress the rejection of racism and violence and instead aim to promote the dedication and commitment of cheering on their side regardless of how well

the team are doing. Those behind the Ultra movement at Macclesfield may well innocently (and for the most part correctly) argue that theirs is a much needed attempt at improving the atmosphere at a ground that is hardly renowned for a fearsome Welcome-To-Hell style reception for away teams but that is also to naively ignore the fact that once you align yourself under the banner of the Ultras you also can’t help but take on the baggage of crimes committed under that name in the past. Claiming otherwise is a bit like being Kula Shaker and trying to reclaim the swastika as an ancient Indian symbol or thinking it’s okay to perform at a Madness gig whilst draped in a Union Jack and singing a song called The National Front Disco in front of a bunch of skinheads. The title ‘Ultra’, unfairly or not, is tainted by associations with facism and violence and the usage of that name by the supporters of a club from a market town in Cheshire whose attendance rarely exceeds two thousand and whose nickname is the hardly terrifying ‘Silkmen’ is going to be seen amongst the cynical as the cringe-worthy piggybacking of the reputation of a notorious type of fan group in order to feel important amongst the small pond of lower/non league football
Forest v Hampton & Richmond Borough - Page 18
support. It hardly helps that a lot of the fans in question are teenagers who, judging by the often illiterate comments left on supporter messageboards, give the impression of a bunch of lads who have grown up watching Danny Dyer ‘World’s Toughest Soccer Mum’ style documentaries and lends a faintly amusing ‘Bugsy Malone does Green Street’ air to proceedings. For all the talk about not being hooligans they almost gleefully indulge in the language of John King novels – “it’s not are fault there after us thinking we are a firm” is a quote from one of the posts, best imagined as read in the voice of Billy Casper – and the constant attempt to goad Stockport County supporters into an imagined rivalry has the whiff of a desperate youth attempting to woo a girl way out of his league at a school disco (sure
Stockport have hit hard times recently but it wasn’t too long ago that they were one league below the top flight whilst we were singing songs about hating Altincham.. and to continue my analogy Lindsay Lohan hasn’t had the easiest of times recently too but I still wouldn’t fancy my chances). There is no denying that what Macclesfield, or indeed any club further down the football pyramid who struggle for numbers, need at home games is an atmosphere of passion – complete with banners, vocal support for the squad, and witty digs aimed at the opposing players and fans. However surely this can all be achieved without the embarrassing flirtation with a predominantly European phenomena that makes far more sense within the seething-cauldron likes of the
Sükrü Saracoglu Stadium than it does the genteel and sparcely populated likes of the Moss Rose? A rebrand of the name is in order if it is to work for the likes of Macclesfield Town I think. How about the ‘Moderates’ or the ‘Milds’? Seems far more appropriate to me.

ShortSJohn Watson is set
to make his Witham Town comeback after missing the
start of the Ryman League Division
One North season with a frustrating
summer injury. The Town striker has missed the
early part of the campaign, includ-ing Saturday’s 2-1 FA Trophy defeat at Crawley Down
Gatwick, due to an ankle injury.
But he may feature in Saturday’s Ryman
League Division One North home
game against Ilford and manager Garry Kimble says his re-turn will be a boost on and off the pitch.
Kimble said: “John should be fit for this
week. “He played in the re-serves on Saturday and came through
that OK.

ShortSThere will be two new clubs in the
Essex Senior League next season. Great Wakering Rovers
were relegated from the Ryman League Division 1 North,
while in an effort to reverse the stagna-tion of the ESL, the
FA have placed FC Bari, a former
Sunday League side straight at Step 5.The Essex Senior
League themselves have been quick
to stress that they had no input over
the allocation of FC Bari, and this has
raised questions in many quarters as to how Bari were allowed into the
Pyramid at Step 5, while so many other
teams have tried and failed. The ESL
undoubtedly needs new teams for the league to remain competitive, but the way in which Bari were chosen seems odd to say the least. The club
will be groundshar-ing at Clapton for the forthcoming
season. Despite ru-mours of a potential
resignation, Basil-don United remain
in the league.
dIvISIon one north lIne-upThe majority of the clubs in the Ryman League Division 1 North for the 2012-13 are the same as those who finished the 2011-12 season. We have lost Leiston and Enfield Town, who have both been promoted to the Premier Division of the Ryman League. At the other end of the table, Great Wakering Rovers have been relegated to the Essex Senior League. Ware, who finished in the second relegation place were given a reprieve by the FA. Coming into the league are Aveley, who were relegated from the Ryman Premier Division, while Witham Town and Wroxham have been promoted from the Essex Senior League and Ridgeons leagues respectively.
ryman league 2011-12 awardSThe Ryman League 2011-12 awards were handed out at the League's an-nual dinner in June. Fair Play winners in each di-vision were Margate, Waltham Abbey and Dulwich Hamlet, while Respect awards went to Tooting, Leiston and, again, Dulwich. The Macron Team Perfor-mance Awards winners were East Thurrock United, who reached the
first round of the FA Cup and also the Alan Boon League Cup final. Red-bridge’s remarkable run to the second round of the FA Cup earned them the Ryman North prize while in the South it provided yet another honour for Dulwich, recognising their achieve-ment in preserving a clean sheet in the Respect markings for almost the whole season while mounting a strong promotion challenge.

Every football team has been wronged on the pitch at some point in their history. Be it a goal against allowed to stand even though the striker was two yards offside or a stonewall penalty that is waved away. Of course these occurrences happen, somewhere, every week. It’s the decisions that come along once in a blue moon that really get the supporters’ goat. Take last week’s FA Cup replay between Bashley and Gosport Borough. Evo-Stik Southern Premier Bash lost 3-2 after extra-time. But before that they had gone into a 3-2 lead themselves. Or so they thought. James Stokoe’s effort had crossed the line only for Gosport keeper Nathan Ashmore to kick the ball through a hole in the net in frustration at conceding the goal. Referee Will Bull then awarded a corner. Now this was clearly an unintentional mistake, albeit a grave one, from the match officials. Bashley, managed by Frank Gray, are understandably annoyed that Gosport players didn’t own up, or let their visitors score from the resulting corner. According to manager Alex Pike, more than half a dozen of his players came to him saying it was unquestionably a goal. None of
them told the ref. Gray has previous in good sportsmanship. When he was in charge of Woking in 2007 he ordered his side to stand aside and allow Grays a free goal. Gentlemanly acts restore our faith in a game that is often seen to be sinking further into a pit of despair particularly at the cash-rich levels where diving and faking is common practice. A lot of people have been quick to criticise Gosport. ‘We wouldn’t want to win like that,’ they say. But can fans really preach the ‘holier than thou’ line? Would you really have the same feelings if it was your team benefitting? If it meant winning the league or getting one over your rivals? Be honest now. It’s easy to justify it in your mind. When Ukraine looked to have scored against England in Euro 2012 only for the officials to wave on play, thoughts immediately turned to South Africa. At the 2010 World Cup Frank Lampard’s shot against Germany had clearly crossed the line but it wasn’t given. Two years later was payback for that, we told ourselves. Sometimes it’s just

too tempting to take the gift and keep schtum. A bit like Monopoly when the banker gives you too much change. In an ideal world you’d give it back. But you know at some point in future the board game gods will deal you a bad hand. And, especially in sport, we don’t live in an ideal world.

A very warm welcome to our visitors from Hampton and Richmond; as a native of Whitton, the Beer Hunter knows Richmond very well, and regularly pops back there for a stroll along the riverside and a pint or two in the White Cross or up the hill in the Roebuck.
Our last away trip to Maldon (the Beer Hunter’s favourite Essex town) found the Farmer’s Ales in the historic Blue Boar on exceptionally good form, and the Queens Head by the river was also worth the slight detour. Sadly, the Swan had gone downhill since our last visit, and the football club’s handpump was again out of action (but at least they had bottled Spitfire and Bishops Finger if you looked hard enough). Real ale really isn’t that hard to put on, and it’s a pity more clubs don’t do it – especially when they have the necessary equipment already in situ.
Thanks to the Trophy draw, our next away trip is a proper Big Day Out to Ramsgate, and this offers a real treat for ale fans with no fewer than six pubs in the Good Beer Guide. The Artillery Arms in Westcliff Road is a cosy traditional pub with locally-brewed Gadd’s beers on tap, which can also be sampled at the Montefiore Arms in Trinity Place
(several-times Thanet CAMRA Pub of the Year – nearest station Dumpton Park) and at the Sir Stanley Gray in nearby Pegwell village. Back in Ramsgate itself, the Churchill Tavern in The Paragon overlooks the marina and has seven handpumps to choose from, the tiny Conqueror Alehouse in Grange Road specialises in local ales and cider straight from the cask, and the Great Tree in Margate Road is a pub with a difference – owned by opera singer Scheherazade Pesante and offering snacks, Puerto Rican food, and a selection of Chinese and Japanese teas and coffees as well as a great choice of beers and ciders. Phew - should be quite a day, but be warned – if you’re going by train, both the station and the ground are a fair old hike from the town centre, but the Conqueror and the Great Tree are both reasonably near both.

is to Brentwood, where hopefully the Essex Arms by the station will have reopened after its refit. A short walk up the hill towards the town, the Brewery Tap in Primrose Hill is worth a look in, while on the way to the ground the Rising Sun in Ongar Road is a comfortable, welcoming community pub offering a range of guest beers, which on our last visit included local Brentwood ales and the welcome return of Ridley’s. Well worth the stop-off, especially as there’s no pub remotely near the ground and no real ale or decent bottled beers in the club bar.
Finally, closer to home, the Birkbeck Tavern in Leytonstone is under threat. Check out the website at www.whatscookin.
