History of Marsiling EstatePrior to the twentieth century, Marsiling was a typical rural area with few villages. The landscape was covered mostly by rubber plantations and wasteland interspersed with attap houses, provision shops, fruits, flower and vegetable farms. One of the notable kampongs in Marsiling was Kampong Lorong Fatimah for about 150 years.

Marsiling Road got its name from the Chinese names given to the estate, which was Maxiling, Maxilin or Maxileng马西岭. Lim Nee Soon林义顺(Yishun) had owned the estate and named it after his hometown of “Maxi” village 马西村 in Teochew prefecture (China).

MOE Schoolbag Newsletter - February 2017Retail – A Selling Point

At Marsiling Secondary School, cleaning out display shelves

and vacuuming the floor of a mock shop front is part of their

lesson in the retail operations elective module for upper

secondary students.

……….

“The programme is to provide the students with experience on

what retailing is all about, but on a micro scale,” explains Ms

Noor Asyikin Mustaffa, an Institute of Technical Education

(ITE) lecturer who is conducting the course at Marsiling

Secondary. For students interested in a retail career, the

programme would also provide them with some technical

knowledge before they go on to specialise in the field at the

ITE.

To facilitate lessons, Marsiling Secondary School has

revamped a classroom so that the curriculum can incorporate

practical and theory components.

……….

Early Admission Exercise to Poly/ITE

EAE is an aptitude-based admissions exercise that allows students to apply and receive conditional offers for admission to polytechnics based on their aptitudes and interests, prior to receiving their final grades. It allows the polytechnics greater flexibility to select and admit students on criteria beyond just academic grades, thus allowing a wider range of talents to be recognised.

Estimated to be around 800 for each poly.

59

Page 60: Warmest Welcome to Changkat Changi Sec School

Implications for EAE

Increased importance of ◦ School internal exam results

◦ Co-curricular activities records – enrichment, competition, VIA, etc

Added advantage to maintain a good portfolio
