Pam nivala“i love steel…its look, feel, and smell. i enjoy making steel come alive in a new form, exhibiting its own quirks and personality. i bend steel…and it bends me. often as not, we reach harmony, both giving a little. the plasma cutting, grinding, welding, forging, and final patina brings a gift of enlightenment. simplistic lines, graceful curves, and pieces that have a powerful but quiet presence appeal to me, along with the adage ‘less is more’." Pam is a resident artist in glenn, Michigan, at at last, as well as resident artist at Kalamazoo’s Midtown gallery. her work has exhibited all over southwest Michigan, including carnegie center for the arts in three rivers, Kalamazoo institute of art, and has won several awards in Michiana annual art competition (Maac) in recent years.

ruby millerruby Miller is an artist, fiber-dyer and seamstress based in grand rapids, Michigan. her studio practice is a mix of methods and materials with her areas of focus being fiber, metals and object collage. she draws inspiration from traditional craft practices, the natural world and the history recorded in objects we use everyday. ruby received her BFa in sculpture from grand Valley state university. she is currently working on an associates degree in Welding technology from grand rapids community college.

All Sampler materials are provided. No experience is required. Projects will start on the ½ hr. We suggest you pre-register for a time slot as space varies among studios.

teresa rendellteresa has been working with glass for two years now. she caught the glass bug when looking for a perfume bottle as a gift; she was hooked and began acquiring books, tutorials, tools, equipment and space necessary to lampwork at home. training began with an introduction to furnace work at Jacksonville university, and then took three courses with sarah hinds of somewhere glassworks in gainesville, Fl. she recently returned to southwest Michigan where she grew up to be closer to a glass community and continue to grow and share.

angela CaldWellangela caldwell crafts each piece of her delicate jewelry in a tiny studio in the company of other artists. after abandoning her training in painting from indiana university, she followed her passion to create her own line of distinctive jewelry. Fondly remembering her grandma’s vintage pieces, she strives to take a look back as well as being inspired by the modern and contemporary. using hand selected gemstones and lovingly discovered vintage elements, each piece is delicate yet durable and very versatile. she is inspired by simple shapes, especially the circle, seeking to find combinations that attract and intrigue. Based in Bloomington, indiana, angela caldwell Jewelry is a one-woman studio creating unique and wearable jewelry for modern women.



greta HUrst greta’s artistic endeavors were first inspired by attending culinary school and running a catering company in los angeles where she learned that we “eat with our eyes.” through study at the chicago Mosaic school, the only premier, not-for-profit mosaic art school in north america, greta transitioned to her full time pursuit of mosaic art. she has studied with a variety of teachers: yulia hanansen to learn innovative techniques to cut and shape glass, and shug Jones and sue giannotti to realistically incorporate light values into her pieces. through membership in the society of american Mosaic artists, hurst began to experiment with an original “blank slate,” often a discarded, vintage window, and express a nurtured vision through her mosaic pieces. in her studio, tabula rasa Mosaics, a converted chicken coop, nestled in the rolling vineyards of southwest Michigan’s wine country, greta uses a palette of stained, vitreous and smalti glass, ceramic tile, porcelain, pebbles, and found objects in both abstract and representational mosaics to express the natural beauty and character of a rural lifestyle that is strongly influenced by growing up on a farm in nW indiana.

amy KUCzeWsKi amy Kuczewski began making soft glass beads in 2003 in claypool, indiana. having gone through many years of eclectic bead styles, she's finally settled into a niche where she is known for her bright colors, fine details and masterful stringer control. her beads are in collections around the world, her fun and funky style giving color and bright happiness to jewelry worldwide.



JOHn VanamerOngenJohn Vanamerongen was born and raised in st. Joseph, Mi. after high school, he departed for detroit, where he graduated from the society of arts and crafts, now the college for creative studies (ccs). at ccs, he taught both sculpture and glassblowing; also upgraded and ran the foundry. While in detroit Vanamerongen, along with three other glassblowers, built and ran the city’s first glassblowing studio, Poultry glassworks, which produced art glass for nearly a decade.

after 14 years Vanamerongen left detroit to pursue his Master’s degree at the school of the art institute of chicago (saic). degree awarded, he stayed on to run the saic foundry and teach sculpture.

John lives with his wife and son in Pine river, Wi, where he continues to make sculpture and show regularly in the region. Vanamerongen also designs and builds custom metal interiors for restaurants, taverns and residences.

• tutoring is available in between each session if you or the instructor feels more experience is needed to progress to the next level. after successful completion of either sequence, you are eligible for studio rental, allowing access to the glassblowing studio in four-hour reserved time slots.

dalle de Verre:WeeKend WOrKsHOPsaturday, august 17, 10 am - 4 pm& sunday, august 18, noon - 4 pm Visiting instructor: toni smithdalles are intensely colored, hand cast ‘slabs’ of glass. often seen in churches, this rare art form combines jewel-like chunks of glass, chiseled from ‘dalles’ and surrounded by a rough mortar of sand, epoxy, and resin. learn the hands-on chiseling techniques required (designing, chiseling, and casting) to create a one of a kind, 12” x 12” ‘dalle de verre’ window panel. Bring any other materials such as ladle castings you might like to add.

Note: Dress for mess. Long pants and closed toe shoes are required for safety. No experience required. All materials are provided. Bring a lunch. $210.

sPin tO Win! CentrifUgal Castingsunday, september 22, 10 am - 4 pm instructor: Jerry Catania

apply the principle of centrifugal force to ladle cast glass and - voila! - you get one-of-a-kind, beautiful bowls. Form bowl shapes in sand and press in patterns to create “one-use” molds. Pour in the glass and “spin” for a “winning” functional work of art. expect to make several pieces. dress for mess.

tWisty Beadssunday, June 9, 12 - 4 pminstructor: Becky Wehmertwisties are like mini cane for beads. using soft glass and a hot head torch, we will focus on proper heating and handling to get an even, consistent pull. you can then use your twisties to do many nifty tricks that look quite complicated but really aren’t.


striPed Bead saturday, June 15, 1 - 5 pminstructor: gina edwards Visiting artistPatience and heat control are the keys to making these fun beads. using the Minor torches, students will learn the secrets of the stripe: making the proper base, dot placement, and a special encasing technique. students must be comfortable pulling and applying stringers. Beads will be annealed in the kiln.

instructor: gina edwardslearn how to make an encased floral bead using the Minor torch. Building on basic bead making skills, students will learn to make and pull a multi-colored vine stringer, dot placement to create flowers, and encasing techniques.

stringing yOU alOng: tHe fine art Of WOrKing WitH stringerssaturday, July 20, 1 - 5 pm instructor: gina edwardsWorking with stringers is almost essential in flamework beadmaking, yet it is one of those skills that can be hard to master. in this class learn different methods for pulling stringers and how to pull them consistently in various thicknesses. demonstration and lecture will show a variety of tips and tricks for successfully applying stringers to a bead, including dots, stripes, and spirals. Minor torches will be used for this class.

stars and striPes /tWinKle tWinKle little star: WeeKend WOrKsHOP saturday, June 29, 10 am - 1 pm& sunday, June 30, 1 - 4 pm (6 hours)instructor: gina edwardsin this class students will learn how to build and pull a star cane and then use it to decorate their beads. students should be comfortable pulling stringer. the Minor torches will be used, and beads will be annealed in the kiln.


sCUlPtUral Beads:WeeKend WOrKsHOPsaturday & sunday, July 27 & 28,12 - 4 pminstructor: Becky Wehmergo beyond the round bead to start thinking more three dimensionally. you’ll learn how to use your skills to work from the inside of the bead, to the outside and gain a better understanding of heat control. We’ll start with the classic fish, sculpting fins eyes and lips and move on to create representational glass sculptures or abstract decorative elements of your choice.

neW!! lOOPy metal COnneCtiOnssunday, July 7, 10 am - 4pm Visiting instructor: Krystin grenona new way to incorporate your beautiful handmade glass beads into bodily adornment - make and connect handmade copper or sterling wire loops with glass beads to make chain into jewelry! this class will introduce designing chain jewelry, forming wire into identically shaped loops, the basics of easy soldering, hammering surface texture for hardening and beauty, and designing findings as finishing touches.

No experience necessary. Students should bring their own glass beads with a minimum 1/8” hole. All other materials provided. Additional wire and silver available for purchase in class. Bring a lunch. $85.

Welding: garden trellis saturday, august 10, 10 am - 4 pm instructor: Josh andres

create a beautiful, functional work of art in the form of a trellis for your garden or yard by using re-bar and found objects. you will cut, bend, weld and fabricate metal.

Basic design considerations for 2d and 3d artwork will be covered as well as mounting considerations: horizontal vs. vertical and structural support. Bring prospective artwork, ideas, or sketches to use as a basis for planning your display. you will learn the techniques to make a stand for a flat panel and/or design considerations for 3d pieces of art.

metals as fiBersaturday, July 27, 10 am - 4 pm instructor: ruby miller, Visiting artistin this class, students will be exploring unconventional combinations of fiber and metal and how one creates meaning in art through their material decisions. the class will explore the application of traditional fiber techniques to metal. Methods will include crochet/knitting with wire, embroidery on wire screen and thinking about metal working in a fiber context, among others. this class will also incorporate discussion of the meaning of these materials and combinations and how one’s artistic choices build meaning in art.

Beginning Blacksmithing introduces students to the skills, equipment, and procedures that are fundamental to this dynamic and exciting art form. lecturing and demonstrations will be followed by short hands-on projects to reinforce the basic principles of forging hot iron. some of these short projects will includes leaves, scrolls, and twists. the goal of the class is to establish a solid foundation from which students can continue their exploration into the metal arts.
