Greetings Everyone. Wow, can you believe that 2017 is al-most half over? Where has the time gone? The membership show is in full swing. Thank you to the Second Presbyterian Church for hosting our group for another year and to our many volunteers who made the opening on May 20
th a spe-
cial day. We had a wonderful luncheon and met Jieun Yu, our scholarship winner, who shared her amazing story as an immigrant to the US and how art helped her adjust to her new life. Teresa Altemeyer had beautiful bouquets of peonies as table decorations and a lucky person from each table got to take one home. Then after lunch Susan Webb Tregay gave us a demo as she shared stories about her art career and gave us some design and color strategies to apply to our own work. If you have a chance, talk with your friends who were able to attend Sue’s workshop. She helped us make her tool folder of eight color strategies and 24 design strategies. She said that when you enter a juried show you get three seconds of a judge’s time as they view the slide entries. By applying these strategies to your work you will be more apt to catch the judge’s attention. Here is a great volunteer opportunity. Linda Bachof-ner is in need of helpers at the Pendleton Art Camp. There will be three different session the week of July 17. You can contact her at [email protected]. The Children’s Art Camp at HCAA in Noblesville was held June 19-22 with two sessions a day: 9-11 am and 1:30 to 3:30 pm. The children were in 1
st to 8
th grade. Please keep this in mind for a 2018
volunteer opportunity! You know the saying: “Many hands make light work!” Finally, don’t forget to pick up your art from the Church on July 8. Also, the deadline for the Juried Show is July 12. Remember, if you don’t enter then you have no chance to get accepted. So get those brushes out and start painting. Hope to see you at the Summer Social on July 23.
See you soon. Karen Fehr, President WSI

2017 WSI/James Lentz Scholarship winner
Jieun (Jane) Yu
By Paula Dearringer
It’s been said that you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink. Such is the world of the WSI James C. Lentz Memorial Art Scholarship opportunity. We had 11 appli-cants this year which was much fewer than anticipated, and the level of talent among our ap-plicants was not as strong as in years past. There was one applicant who immediately caught the attention of all of the committee mem-bers to whom we’re excited to award the James C. Lentz Memorial Art Scholarship this year.
Each applicant was required to submit an artist’s statement,
artist portfolio, teacher recommendation and a transcript of grades. The candidates were asked to explain their creative process in their artist’s statement and encouraged to submit a diverse portfolio of their work that included at least one drawing and one painting. The committee (Kathy Cornelius, Paula Dearringer, Carol Griffith, Ann Johnson, Brenda Pettigrew, Julie Thorson and Joan Yauch) reviewed the ap-plications multiple times and ultimately made the decision to award one scholarship to a student found to be truly deserving based on her artistic accomplishments. Jieun (Jane) Yu is a senior at Carmel High School. She moved with her sister and mother to the United States from Korea in 2011. Jieun used art to liberate herself from the frustration of not
being able to communicate with others because of her thick Korean accent and issues speak-ing English. Her art helped her make friends and feel empowered. Through her art Jieun has been able to make statements about topics she feels passionate about: cultural identity, history, mental illness, love, freedom, peace and education. Her work has a strong emotional
quality and is executed with an extremely high level of skill. Jieun has received numerous awards during her high school career including being one of only 26 students in the world to earn every point possible on the AP Portfolio Exam! She is in the top 3% of her graduating class and plans to attend Yale this fall. It is an honor to award the James C. Lentz Memori-al Art Scholarship to Jieun Yu, and we are
confident that she will experience enormous success as she continues her artistic journey.
The 2017 Member Show opened on May 20. WSI was fortunate to be invited back for the second year to ex-hibit at the Second Presbyterian Church, 7700 North Meridi-an Street. Artists delivered paintings, and they were hung on the walls by our dedicated volunteers. Paintings were hung in the beautiful McFarland Hall, on the third floor. The church is home to an extremely active community center with a con-gregation of over 4000. The table decorations of fresh Peo-nies from Teresa Altemeyer’s garden were taken home by one person at each table. Numerous activities are sched-uled at Second Presbyterian each day, which will ensure a lot of traffic through this ‘gallery’ space. WSI thanks the Fine Arts Director and his team. The paintings will hang until Fri-day, July 7. The membership meeting began with President Ka-ren Fehr welcoming members and guests. Karen reviewed dates for the upcoming Juried Show and noted that images are due on July 14, and will be viewed on Saturday, July 23, 1:30 pm at the Lawrence Library. She thanked Marcia Rel-ler, Membership Exhibit Chair, Teresa Altemeyer, Social Chair.
Paula Dearringer presented the WSI/Lentz Scholarship winner, Jieun (Jane) Yu. Jieun and her family joined us for the afternoon. Paula talked about Jieun and awarded her a certificate. We were quite honored to then hear from Jieun herselfl and her challenges and how the artistic medium guided her here in America. A $1,00 check to her school, Yale University is to follow. Thank you to the many volunteers including Cindy Norrick Turner to whom made the Susan Webb Tregay workshop possible. THANK YOU CINDY!!!! Without you and your husband the spring workshop and many others would not be possible. Thank you to Marcia Reller for spearheading the 2017 Membership Show. Thank you to Bob Bratton and Jim Weaver for heading the painting hanging committee in 2017, as well as many other Mem-bership Show tasks. Thank you to Teresa Altemeyer for organizing the Membership show luncheon and the beauti-ful peony centerpieces. Finally, thank you to the countless other volunteers to whom the membership show, spring workshop and luncheon would not be possible. Thank you for your support of WSI! The demonstration was given by Susan Webb Tregay , an accomplished painter from Hendersonville, North Carolina.. Sue says, “Most importantly, I am not here to teach you how to paint like me. I'm a studio painter who loves to spend weeks perfecting a painting. I will give you the skills that I use to perfect my paintings and, through one-on-one discussions with each of you, help you find a path for developing your own style.”

Acrylics in an Egg Tempera Style By Jim Weaver For the last ten years, I’ve worked exclusively with transparent watercol-ors. As much as I love the medium, I’ve lately had the itch to try some-thing a little different for a change of pace. Having long been a big fan of the early (that is, around the first decades of the 15th century) Renaissance painters (Jan Van Eyck, Rogier Van Der Weyden in the North, and painters like Fillipo Lippi and Sandro Botticelli in Italy), I wondered if I might be able to do something similar to their style. Oil paints were just coming into use about this time, and Van Eyck especially seemed to have mas-tered the medium early on. But many of these artists apparently continued to work, at least off and on, in the older medium of egg tempera. Egg tempera seems to me to lie somewhere between watercolor and oil paint. It’s not completely transparent, but not completely opaque either. I thought perhaps I could imitate this effect using acrylics, since I would surely not have the patience to boil rabbit skin glue to make gesso, and then mess with dry colors mixed with egg yolk to make the paint, etc. So I bought a starter set of Liquitex paints, a piece of illustration board, and a book of basic acrylic techniques, and had at it. As you can see from the accompanying illustration of my first attempt, I was feeling my way and learning as I went along. My strategy was roughly, to begin with large washes of very thinned out paint, very much like watercolor, to block in the big shapes. I found that I could be much looser and quicker than with my transparent watercolors, since I didn’t have to worry so much about reserving the white shapes or going too dark too soon. For example, I painted in the white fence over the sky, rather than reserving the white paper as one would do with transparent color. Then I went over almost all the painting with small strokes (numbers 1 and 2 brushes) try-ing for a transluscent effect, using about a 50-50 solution of a matte medium and water, to refine the drawing and get the exact colors and textures I wanted. All this busy work took a long time, but surprisingly I found it to be a rather pleasant and relaxing experience. Lastly, I painted in the trees and foliage. The bushes and weeds in the foreground would have been very difficult to do with my usual transparent paints. I think I learned a lot from this experience, and plan to do a few more paintings in this style. For those of you artists more experience in acrylics than I, suggestions and hints would be welcome! —Jim Weaver ([email protected])

We will not be using rules and formulas however the emphasis will s ll be on concept, color and design. Barbara’s inspira on comes both from na-ture and the inevitable unpredictability of the watercolor medium. Both abstract and realis c forms will be addressed. Before reloca ng to the Napa Valley in Northern California in 1988, she maintained a studio in New Rochelle, NY for many years.
“I call my work abstract realism. My work falls into a small cate-gory between realism and abstrac on. All of the forms are real to me and come from nature but I usually push them into shapes that could occur but are not necessarily recognizable to others. I hope that these shapes add up to a landscape that most people understand. I don’t paint with an image in mind. It evolves as I work. The paper and paint seduce me. I rarely start with a subject in mind but anything to do with nature en ces me. I use watercolor so that it looks fluid and creates an illusion that the paint arrived magically. For me, a good pain ng is a balance between chance, intui on and technique.” - Barbara Nechis
PAPER – Arches 140 lb. CP is essen al for some techniques. 300 lb. is also acceptable. Bright White is NOT as recep ve. You may work any size you prefer. Bring enough paper for 2 pain ngs per day. I prefer loose paper to blocks. BRUSHES - I use a 2” Robert Simmons Skyflow, 1½” Simmons or Winsor Newton 680 One Stroke, 1” and ½” aquarelle and a #2 or #3 rigger or liner. I like Richeson 1 ½”& 2” flat brushes. My brushes are synthe c and of quality brands that hold an edge. PALETTE - John Pike (my choice) or any white surface such as a
butcher’s tray or ceramic plate. I use Cheap Joe X-tra color pale es to test colors. SUPPORT BOARD I work flat on a table and rarely clip the paper to a board. Masonite, le board, plexi, foam or gator board may be cut to paper size, slightly smaller or larger on all sides. PAINT ‐ USE THE COLORS AND BRANDS YOU PREFER – I include transparent and opaque in warm and cool versions of the primary colors.
