When appearance really counts

The development of Emballator’s new business concept has perhaps been the most exciting phase in the company’s history. The resulting business model is presented on the illustrated tinplate can. In order to meet our customers’ demand for integrated solutions, Emballator bases its business concept on five clear core values: expertise, accessibility, reliability, efficiency and simplicity. Each of these values plays a vital role in our dealings with clients. A cornerstone of Emballator’s business concept is that we regard every

customer as unique. Emballator’s product range is determined by our customers’ needs and the work required to meet these needs. To improve our clarity when communicating with customers, we have divided our offering into three categories: standard, design and innovation. Emballator offers its customers more than tinplate cans. We also provide various support services to improve the market appeal of our clients’ products and facilitate their daily routines.Test us – we enjoy challenges!

We help our customers print packaging with sales appealChoosing tinplate as a packaging material offers unique opportunities for exciting, appealing packaging designs. Often the aim is to create sales-boosting and informative packaging. For many years, Emballator’s repro and printing department has been helping customers achieve successful, cost-effective end results.

Printing on tinplate is different to prin-ting on paper, card or plastic. Tinplate allows very high print quality to be achie-ved on packaging. Thanks to tinplate’s natural properties, exciting visual effects can be achieved by leaving it wholly or partly visible.

As in the whole commercial printing industry, Emballator’s repro depart-ment is largely digitalised and uses the software that is most widely recognised among graphic designers. This page spread shows you the optimal work pro-cess from preliminary sketches through to the finished printed can.

To ensure consistent high quality, it is essential to consult Emballator’s highly experienced repro department. Many of our customers engage their own advertising or design firms, and the sooner Emballator’s repro department

is involved in the process, the better the end result. Costs can also be saved by choosing the right material for printing on from the outset.

Besides the obvious need to create packaging with a marketable message and design, many packages must display information regarding content and legal requirements for dangerous goods (UN labelling etc.). Emballator is an excellent source of information in this area too, and provides information on the latest directives and legal requirements.

Emballator’s printing department has state-of-the-art printing presses capable of a screen density of up to 133 lines per inch. These days, most of our clients choose four-colour printing for their packages. We naturally use environ-mentally approved printing inks.

Having our own repro and printing department allows us to monitor the whole process. The print result and ink

feed are constantly checked at all stages. If corrections are required, new printing plates can be produced. But it’s worth repeating: to save time and cost at all stages, we strongly advise you to contact Emballator’s repro department early in the work process. This benefits everyone concerned.

Tinplate allows very high print quality to be achieved on packaging.

Exciting visual effects can be achieved by leaving part or all of the tinplate visible.

The Jotun lid won first prize for best function in the Best in Metal Award 2006 of the Metal Packaging Manufacturers Association (MPMA).

1. ProofAfter the material is received by the repro department, it is immediately converted to the department’s digital environment. After this, a proof is designed, usually in PDF format, to make sure that the design and text have remained intact during conversion. The proof is sent to the client for approval.

3. FilmsAfter the client has approved and signed the colour swatch and returned it to the repro department, it’s time to design the printing films. These films are used when copying the motif onto the tinplate. One film is produced for each colour that is to be printed. In the case of 4-colour printing (colour images), four films are produced. The number of cans (can body) that fit on each film/printing plate depends on the can’s size.

4. Plate (zinc)A printing plate (zinc) is produced from each film, so in the case of 4-colour printing, one plate is produced for each: cyan, magenta, yellow and black. If a fifth colour is to be used, an additional plate must be produced.

6. Finished canThe printing plate is dried in an oven before being processed. This is followed by all the manufacturing stages required to produce the finished can. Emballator’s new production lines can take the uncut, printed tinplate and produce finished, palletised cans with no manual handling in between.

5. Printing and coatingSome type of internal protective coating is often required, depending on the can’s intended use. This means that one side of the printing plate must be given a protective coating before the tinplate goes to the printing press. Emballator’s printing press has two inking devices, so the plate must pass through the printing press twice for 4-colour printing. If one or more additio-nal colours are to be used, the plate must pass through more times. Finally, a protective coating is applied.

The right printing materialIt’s vital that our customers’ advertising agencies and marketing departments provide the repro department with material of the right type and quality. Here are some guidelines when submitting digital material.

1. We accept material in most grap-hics programs, including Indesign, QuarkXpress, Illustrator and Freehand. However, we prefer high-resolution PDFs. It makes no difference whether the material is for Mac or PC.

2. High-resolution pictures: 300 dpi Photoshop, EPS or Tiff format.

3. Text should be editable. No text outlines.4. Fonts should be embedded or

attached with the other material.5. Drawings of decorative designs.

2. Colour swatchAfter the proof is approved, the repro department produces a colour swatch. Colours printed on tinplate look different than when printed on white paper, so it’s vital to simulate the tinplate when producing the colour swatch. The colour swatch shows how the colours will look on the printed can.
