What will you discover?
We have separated this booklet into different subject areas. There are a lot of activities in this pack, so don’t feel pressured to do them
all...pick and choose the ones you want to do, save some for next week or go nuts and do them all, your choice! We have done lots so
hopefully there is something for everyone.
Oh and don’t forget to read, read, read and above all else, have fun!!
Year R
Literacy
The scientists need your help to find out the different parts of underwater animals. It is your challenge to choose an animal that
lives in the sea and label their different body parts. Do any of the body parts have digraphs you recognise?
A sailor went to sea sea sea, to see what he could see see see, But all that he could see see see was…
But what did the sailor see? Grab your telescope and sailors hat, what animals can you see in the sea? Can you write a list of the animals you find? For an extra challenge can you write a sentence about the animals you have seen?
Can’t think of anything, watch this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC9r0jHF-Fw
Make a digraph octopus! Pick one sound for each tentacle. How many words can you think of for each digraph that you have picked? Write these words along that tentacle. For example the an ‘ow’ tentacle could have the words cow, owl, clown, gown, frown along it.
WHAT IS THAT? It is an unknown under the sea creature!
You have discovered a new animal on your diving mission, but what is it? Can you draw a picture of your new discovery and write a
sentence about it? Remember to use your amazing describing words to tell us about the animals you have discovered. For example a
squishy, green blob with eyes as yellow as the sun!
Just keep fishing, just keep fishing... for digraphs!
Did you know a sailors favourite restaurant is the digraph diner? But the diner has run out of food, could you help them by fishing for
digraphs and serving them to the sailors? Remember the sailors need a big meal, so try and make and write some words with the digraphs
you have found. Record the words in your books ready for the sailors dinner.
Maths
Mrs Crab needs your help! She has lost her shells, can you help her find them? Swim
around your home to find as many shells as you can and return them to Mrs Crab. Can you put them in order and then count out
the correct number of pegs onto each shell?
Can you pick two shells and add them together?
Extra challenge: could you create Mrs Crab some more shells using your knowledge of the teen numbers?
Time to feed the fish!
The fish need your help to work out how much they should eat for dinner. Parents—write a number sentence on each fish and then ask your children to read and solve the problem. They can use anything they can count to
solve the problems, so don’t feel like you have to finger paint! To begin use numbers to 10, if you would
like a challenge maybe you could swim into the teen numbers.
How many fish are in the tank? Pick a number between 1 and 20 and pop this in
the middle. What is one more and one less of your chosen number? Can you draw or count out the right number of fish? Can
you write the correct number?
Challenge—can you work out 2 more and 2 less than your chosen number? Or 5 more
and 5 less?
Oti the Octopus needs you help...his spots have fallen off of his tentacles!!
Write some number sentences for your children, for example 9+8 = and get them to put the dots onto a tentacle and then add
them together.
As an extra challenge you could give them a missing number problem using their number bonds to 10. We need 10 dots, we only have
6, how many more do we need?
Make some octopus tentacles out of string. Can you order them from longest to
shortest? Can you measure your tentacles and write down how long they are? You could
use things you have around the house to measure your tentacles as long as they are all
the same size, for example lego blocks or counters.
Understanding the world
It is your turn to make your own underwater scene.
You can make this any way you want. You could use real water, paint an egg box, make some blue spaghetti, paint a picture. What
animals live in the sea? Can you add these in? What else would you find under the sea? Maybe you could add some shells or sea
weed etc.
We want to go under the sea to explore the sea creature more so we need a
submarine. What could we make it out of? Try different items around you
house for ones that will sink under the water.
Any plastic toys
will be fine!!
Physical development
Grab your swimming googles, its time for underwater yoga. What animals did
you see?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qC83oFEeVZA
Grab your octopus hat it is time to play ‘tag’! This is great game to play with the family, someone wears the octopus hat
and swims after the fish; the fish have a cave which is their home and they are
safe. But they have to come out! When you have tagged someone else swap the
hat and they become the octopus.
Can you set up an obstacle course in your back garden (or living room if its rainy) and become a shark finding its way through the ocean.
Have a go at writing your cursive letters in sand/paint/slat etc thinking about your curly caterpillar, one armed robot and long
ladder. Take a picture and show us your amazing work.
Expressive arts and design
Time to get creative and make an animal you might see in the ocean using any construction you might have at home. Have a think about
what colours they will be and why? What will they eat, can you make that as well?
Can you paint your own fish? You could use different vegetables to create patterns on your
fish by placing the vegetable in the paint and printing it on your fish. What colour would you make if you mixed blue and red? What if you
mixed yellow and blue?
Jellyfish on a plate, jellyfish on the plate, wibble wobble, jellyfish on a plate.
Grab a plate and some paint to create your very own jellyfish, this is a creative activity and your jellyfish can look how ever you like. We would love to see your jellyfish creations
on tapestry.
We have been doing so much diving but we don’t have a snorkel mask, so
let’s make one. Look through your recycling to find items that you can use to junk model ether a diving kit
or a snorkel.
Please remember that to enable us to easily see any new parent questions on the facebook page and to enable our posts to be seen clearly please save any posts of your children’s work on there until Friday for our ’Celebration Assembly’. Tapestry will operate in the
same way so feel free to upload your child's work into there any time you fancy.
Next week we will be focusing on mermaids and pirates!
The following pages are in response to the parent questionnaire.
Some parents have asked for some more work sheet style activities so we have found a few linked to the topic that you will hopefully be
able to just give to your child to compete if you need a quiet 10 minutes!
Also below are some links to some phonic videos that you can watch. We would suggest watching one each day and having the last day as a re-cap. Maybe challenge your child to make a list of any words they can think of including that sound or playing a game on phonics play,
within phase 3, selecting that sound as the focus.
