What is the value of green space? According to the Central Park Conservan-cy, on July 21, 1853 the New York State Legislature passed a law to set aside more than 750 acres of land central to Manhattan Island for the purpose of cre-ating America’s first major landscaped public park, or “the Central Park.” Social-ly conscious reformers understood that creating a great public park would im-prove public health and contribute to the formation of a civil society. The success of Central Park fostered the urban park movement.

You may have looked at wetlands, such as swamps and marshes, as “unattractive” compared to expansive blue lakes and tall trees in a forest. How-ever, wetlands serve many purposes. They serve as a filtering system, helping to improve water purity, reduce erosion and flooding and provide homes for many plant and animal species.

Almost 20 years ago, visitors to Detroit Lakes took a survey. They placed im-portance on these features in choosing a place to visit: natu-ral environ-ment, wa-ter recrea-tion and activities. These same fea-

tures were repeated in a 2007 visitor sur-vey. The visitors’ im-pressions of Detroit Lakes before arriving in 2001 were de-scribed as “nice, remote, unknown.” Af-ter their visit their impression of our community was “beautiful, pleasant and commercialized.”

As we look to future development in Detroit Lakes, what importance do you put on green space? Do you spend time admiring the flowers and rain gardens in the City Park? Does the crack of the bat as it meets the baseball remain in your mind after you leave a game in Washing-ton Park? When choosing a place to meet your friends, do you consider the charm and atmosphere of the building?

Decisions on development balanced by green space in Detroit Lakes will be con-sidered in the coming months and years.

Cleone Stewart, Tourism Director

Tourism Committee members were treated to a sneak peek of Country Inn & Suites’ remodeling project by Valerie Turnbull (center) on October 2. Attending were (l-r) Gary Thompson, Amy Wolf, Emily Meyers, Casey Picillo, Rebecca Benjamin, Todd Mitchell and (not pictured) Cleone Stewart.
