Dear Parishioners,

As we conclude National Vocations

Awareness Week I want to thank

everyone who had the chance to see

the wonderful production of VIANNEY last

Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Center

Auditorium in Douglaston. The attendance from

the ten parishes in Queens Deanery #5 was very

good and everyone was inspired by this

performance starring Mr. Leonardo Defilipppis as Saint John Vianney.

Also, Queens Deanery #5 will host “Project Andrew” next Sunday, November 19th from 4 PM to 6 PM. at

Our Lady of the Blessed Sacrament Parish Center, 34-24 203 Street, Bayside NY 11361. Bishop Paul

Sanchez, Auxiliary Bishop of Brooklyn, will be present and it will be an evening of prayer and fellowship

for young Catholic men who would like to learn more about a vocation to the priesthood. The priests and

deacons at Our Lady of the Snows are ready to answer any questions about “Project Andrew” and if you can

attend please call us at the Parish Office or call OL Blessed Sacrament Church at (718) 229-5929 to register.

As part of the “Year of Vocations” we will begin a monthly series in the parish called Tell My Story. The

Parish Vocations Committee has coordinated a series of reflections to be offered by the priests, deacons and

religious in the parish one time a month at Sunday Mass.

Deacon John Warren has written his vocation story in today’s bulletin and he will speak further next Sunday,

November 19th at the 11:00 AM. The Parish Vocations Committee and I hope you will be inspired by

Deacon John’s story of vocation to married life and the diaconate.

As I’ve mentioned before we are blessed with the Vocations

Committee in the parish which reminds us of our own vocation

stories and how God calls us to fulfillment and peace. May our

work together help others, especially young people, to discern their

vocation from God whether as single, married, priest or religious.

John Warren – Vocation Story

I would like to start with a little background. I grew up in New Hyde Park and have lived in Floral Park for the past 26 years, so I have spent most of my life in this part of the world. My wife, Lisa, and I have been married for 28 years and have two beautiful daughters, Marie, who is 19 and a sophomore at the University of Scranton and, Grace, who is 11 and a 6th grader at PS/MS 219.

My vocation story starts in an unusual place – City government. I spent twenty years working for the New York City Department of Housing Preservation and Development and, some people may be surprised when I say this, but I believe then and still believe now that public service is a form of vocation. I worked with some incredible people and we focused on rebuilding the city’s neighborhoods in a time when not everyone had hope for the City’s future, especially in places like Brownsville and the South Bronx and Harlem. The story is one of great success built on a lot of hard work by many people, most especially the residents of neighborhoods who committed to making their communities better for the generations to come.

I had always been a church goer. I went to Catholic elementary school and was an altar server, but mostly I was sitting in the back of the church at Mass and minding my own business (maybe I misunderstood the words of Jesus about not sitting in a place of prominence at the banquet). I think that it was only as I came to see the vibrancy of Lisa’s connection to people that I started to realize that Church meant more than just me and Jesus, it meant all of the people around us, too. Gradually that led to us becoming more involved with parish life. Lisa and I joined the Baptism Preparation Team when Marie was a baby (and we were still young parents) and I joined the Finance Committee (something I felt that I knew something about).

Then, in 2004, Bishop Ray asked me to think about the diaconate. I was actually somewhat familiar with the diaconate not just from the wonderful service of Deacons Hank, Matt and Steve here at the parish, but from my uncle who was ordained in the 1970’s in the Archdiocese of Boston and had a tremendous ministry in a residential mental health facility for thirty years. (Uncle Gene has gone to his eternal reward, but he continues to inspire me and keep me humble at the same time).

In my prayer and discernment about whether I thought I was called to this vocation of diaconate, it seemed like this was what I was supposed to be doing. Some men talk about wanting to be a deacon, but, for me, that didn’t and still doesn’t quite fit. It really is more that my discernment, on my own, with Lisa and Marie (Grace was born while I was already in formation) and with my spiritual director, led me to see this as a call to service in this particular way.

So, I have always had this sense of service – public service, diaconal service, most broadly service to God’s holy people. I hope to live that life most authentically in my work (developing and managing affordable housing), in my ministry (here at Snows and in the Diocese) and with my family and friends. Please keep me in your prayers and know that I keep all of you in mine.
