What is ‘Web 2.0’ and why is it significant in media?

This is the new branch of the internet. It’s heavily reliant on social networking and it aids distribution of media products. Its users generate content which means there is no clear divide between a media producer and a media used.

What do we mean by ‘Media literacy’?

"Media literacy can be defined as the ability to read a media text, in understanding the process of communication through the construction of an artefact and its sets of representations. The ability to read a media text, in its visual or audio form, is itself paramount to understanding the meaning that a text may convey which is dependent upon the individual, psychological and sociocultural context of the reader."

What do we mean by ‘online age’?

This is the new generation of online users

For example, I grew up using the internet

Whereas older people such as my parents and their parents watched the internet grow and develop into a huge database that holds every piece of information that you may require

The online age is more prominent than ever now that the internet is used for industries for marketing and distribution methods

What is meant by ‘remix culture’?

We are currently living in a remix culture

We’ve become a part of society which encourages derivative work

This is achieved by editing pre-existing materials and connecting new materials to create a new product, hence the term ‘remix’

How can I apply this to my own work?

I can apply these to my work as when considering the creation of my music video, I will have to make sure that my work is distributed effectively within Web 2.0 and make it relevant to the new ‘online age’
