Besides our traditional mining and pastoral industries, tourism is a growing industry which benefits many local
residents and creates a lot of business and employment opportunities for many of our local people.
Due to our relative isolation from other towns the majority of our visitors will spend money in Meekatharra on
fuel, refreshments and use a variety of our other services. All residents are urged to treat our visitors with
courtesy and respect so they have a positive image or their visit to and through our town.
Let’s work on improving our image as a friendly and welcoming community. A community that our visitors will
remember with fondness. This will help build Meekatharra’s profile as a place to invest and as a place to visit.
On a a different tack: The countdown is on until the global community unites and switches off the lights this
Saturday, 23 March at 8.30pm. This year, in addition to switching off the lights, Australians are making the
pledge to switch on to renewable energy, like solar.

Kerry Salmon has once again excelled herself in organising an enjoyable fundraising
event at the Commercial Hotel on Sunday 17th March. Great idea to combine this with
St Patrick’s Day. The people of Meekatharra once again generously donated their time,
money and hair to a good cause. Kerry’s commitment to raising funds for the Leukemia
Foundation is a credit to her—she does our community proud.
It is clear from the photographs printed here and on the next page that everyone involved
had a great time. Congratulations to all involved.

COUNCIL NEWS
Works & Services News
The Works & Services crews and contractors have been busy over the month of February and into
March.
Construction Works
The works crew are installing culverts and floodway cutoff walls on various water crossings on the
Landor Road. One concrete flood crossing has been widened to 10m and is also being changed to a
culvert crossing.
Flood Damage Repair
Flood damage repair work has been completed on the Marymia and the Peak Hill—Three Rivers Road.
Work is being done to re-sheet a 15km section of the Murchison Downs Road including re-enforcing of
various floodways.
Town Maintenance
The cleaning up of smashed glass, graffiti to town signs buildings, lamp posts and footpaths continues
and has taken a considerable amount of time to remove.
Town streets are regularly swept. Sweeping along kerb lines is done regularly to avoid the build up of
sand and leaves. Rubbish is regularly removed from vacant blocks.
Youth Services News
Youth Services are offering a number of activities for children, youth and adults. These range from
music to cooking to science experiments to relaxing and playing an xbox game (if that’s possible!). For
a better idea of what’s available, see the timetable of activities included in this issue of the Meekatharra
Dust.
An upcoming project for the youth of Meekatharra will see the Youth Services staff work with kids to
produce a range of multi-media messages directed toward the community – more on this at a latter stage.
A big thank you to casual staff and volunteers – without you, delivering these activities would be
impossible.
Picture Garden
Work on upgrading the Picture Garden has been steady this month, with new seat covers being
delivered, old light poles and fittings getting taken down, a trench dug and most of the electrical work
being done. We are hoping to have the facility ready for opening sometime in April.

K i d s M a t t e r s In late February the Meeka Dust received a letter to the Shire requesting a
skate park. Written by Year 3 student Thane Butler-Henderson, it is a great
example of persuasive writing. Thank you for your letter, Thane. Young readers
and old, what do you think? Send us your letters and pictures.
