Year Four Home Learning Planner WC: 4 th May 2020 This week, all of your learning tasks build up to celebrate the 75 th anniversary of VE Day, which marks 75 years since the end of WW2. These activities are for you to enjoy as a family leading up to the celebrations being held on Friday 8 th May. Please share your photos on our Facebook page and class email: [email protected] , so we can share and enjoy the celebrations together. We would really like you to get creative and do the best with the activities/resources you have been set. If you cannot make any of the ideas, you could always draw them out and there may be a time you can create them at a later date. Please continue to read daily, learn your spelling, and practice your maths through some of the games on the Topmarks site or Times Tables Rockstars (a login can be obtained by contacting us on the email address above). Math s Morse Code Morse Code was used during the war as a way of sending messages. Use the Morse Code alphabet to translate the messages attached. Challenge: can you create your own code and write a secret message for somebody in your family to crack! You could even send it to me! I would love to see if I can translate them! Art and Design Challenges1)Make a Medal: Medals were given by the British Government to those who participated in World War II.

Design your own medal for a British Soldier to acknowledge their role in the war.Think about the shape of the medal, what might have been engraved on it, and the colour of the ribbon.Challenge: annotate your medal explaining the decisions you have made and how this relfects the signifance of the war. If you have the resources to do so, make your medal and take a photograph of you wearing it.

2)Party Decorations: No party is a party without some decorations and this was the case when people held their celebrations at home.Design and create your own party decorations. They may include: bunting, flags, posters etc. Try to use the colours red, white and blue.Challenge: include important facts on your bunting.

Science ChallengeDuring the war parachutes were used by paratroopers, some were even accompanied by dogs.Design and make your own parachute using materials from around the house. Time how long it takes for your parachute to fall to the floor. You could hold it yourself or even ask an adult to help you drop it from a window.A little extra: research how parachutes work using the force ‘air resistance’.

Winston Churchill’s Speech

Today we give thanks to Almighty God for a great deliverance.

Speaking from our Empire’s oldest capital city, war-battered but never for one moment daunted or dismayed – speaking from London, I ask you to join with me in that act of thanksgiving.

Germany, the enemy who drove all Europe into war, has finally been overcome.
