Internet Safety For the first part of this self-directed task, I decided to go through all of the word documents on the Learning Network on internet safety. These were all split up into examples of E safety lessons for years one to six. When looking through the various lessons I was surprised to see how many resources were available for different year groups. For example Google ‘safe search kids’ which allows children to search using the Google search engine, but prevents any inappropriate content appearing. I really liked how these E lessons were split up into lesson plans as I think this make them easier for teachers to access. It also gives them ideas on what they could use in their own lessons. They also give curriculum opportunities which teachers would find extremely useful. Below are two examples from year three and year six which I thought would be really good to use in the classroom. This first example was taken from a year three E-Lesson and is a rap all about how children can keep their passwords safe on the internet. This includes how they can create their passwords, who they can share it with (their parent or guardian) and who they should not share it with (friends). The next example was taken from a year six E-lesson, this focuses on taking children on an internet safety interactive journey. I think this would be engaging for year sixes because it allows them to take internet safety into their own hands. There are also many videos available which could be used in assemblies and posters which could be used around the classroom.

Internet Safety

For the first part of this self-directed task, I decided to go through all of the word documents on the Learning Network on internet safety.

I then went on to look at using social media quizzes and how this could be used within the classroom to teach children what they should and should not be doing on the internet. For example, giving out their own personal information such as their age, location or email address.

Below is an example of one of the quizzes which I thought was quick, easy and got the point across. This was called ‘Breakout’ and for each question answered correctly, a life would be gained. The

version of the game I played had six questions, which I think is just the right amount for the children to then remember what they have learnt. Below is a screenshot of the game:

I then looked at the ‘social media sites we need to be aware of’ page on the Learning Network and found it really interesting to look at why certain social media sites are so popular. I was amazing to see the range of social media which was so popular with young people. This social media included: Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Tumblr, Google+, Vine, Wanelo, Kik, Messanger, Oovoo, Yik Yak, Ask.fm, Whatsapp, Omegle, Yo and Whisper. I also really like how there is a section on what ‘parents need to know’. This is important because it makes sure that internet safety is both being taught in school and at home.
