Reformation 2017 Celebration

October 31, 2017 will be the 500th anniversary of the beginning of the Reformation. The council has approved a proposal to host an open house on Saturday, October 27 in celebration of this event. We would like to invite the community to visit our church to learn more about the Reformation, the ELCA, and St. Andrew Lutheran Church. Each committee will plan activities for the event, and there will be lots of opportunities for members to get involved. If you have ideas for the open house or how we can let the community know about it, please talk with a council member.

Did you know that in June our truck ministry will be three years old? During this time we have served hundreds of meals to the citizens of Mount Airy and Surry County, and many folks receive these meals every week. They have come to count on this simple meal, and they continue to thank us for this ministry. With summer approaching, providing food for families will become even more important as children are out of school. The school systems provide nutrition programs during the summer, but parents need all the help they can get. There was an article about the H.O.P.E. ministry in Spark magazine which was included in a recent Winston Salem Journal. H.O.P.E. (Help Our People Eat) was started by members of Centenary United Methodist Church to feed children at nearby schools. This has grown into a program that serves over 1,000 meals to children every weekend. What they are doing down in Winston-Salem is certainly impressive, but how it got started was very thought provoking. In a sermon, Dr. Mark Ralls shared a story about how a member told him that while he preached a good sermon, he never asked members to take specific action. In the sermons for the Lenten season and Holy Week, we are reminded to love one another. What better way to show our love than to feed our neighbors. Our congregation supports a ministry where everyone can help. Please think about coming to the church for an hour on Tuesdays to put the meals together. Consider going downtown to help give out the meals – it only takes about 30 minutes, and you will get meet our neighbors who are God’s children, too. You could donate bread, eggs, or fruit for our weekly meals. We need soup in the winter. Come to the community meals. They are a great fellowship time.

Winston- Salem Dash Baseball

Do you like to watch baseball? How about good fun and fellowship? We will be going to a Winston-Salem Dash baseball game on Friday, May 19 with the game starting at 7:00 pm. Talk with Larry Wiley if you are interested in attending. Plan to meet at the church at 6:00 if you would like to carpool to the game.

Community Meal – June 6

Our next community meal will be on Tuesday, June 6. This will be our annual hot dog supper, so come out and enjoy an evening of fellowship with our friends in need. Watch for a sign-up sheet in the fellowship hall. We will need donations of desserts and side dishes.

Call Committee

The Call Committee continues to be in contact with Pastor John Mocko at the NC Synod Office as we search for our new pastor. A meeting has been scheduled with Pastor Mocko on May 2. Please keep our congregation and the call committee in your prayers as we look forward to meeting the pastor that God is calling to serve our congregation.

Music Camp

The congregation has almost met its goal for the cost for Ryan Singleton to attend Music Camp at Lutheridge this summer. Please consider giving a small donation to support our congregation’s pianist, organist, choir director, and bell choir director. We will all certainly benefit from the skills Ryan gains at the camp.
