SEPTEMBER 2018 ISSUE

FROM THE PASTOR: September notes:

End of summer Greetings, Brothers and Sisters in Christ.

Can you believe it, summer is almost over! We’ve spent the last five weeks or so studying Jesus as the bread of life. We have been challenged and motivated to understand what it means to be the body of Christ in the world. But we are also comforted knowing that Christ is the bread of life that feeds us, strengthens us, encourages us to be God’s people.

Together as a community of faith, we are the body of Christ for each other. We feed each other through Holy Communion and fellowship, we strengthen each other and encourage one another. The Word of God lives in us and through us for the sake of the community and the world.

As we continue our journey of faith, we are called to join Jesus in being bread for the world. We are to feed the hungry, bring clean water to the thirsty, ensure shelter for the homeless, clothes for those in need, and to welcome the stranger – the lost, the least and the last.

May God bless you richly to be bread for those nearby, those across the street, across town, and those far from us economically, socially, and those different from us and those like us, for all are created in the image of God.

Pastor Linda

VBS MISSION PROJECT THANK YOU!

The Mission Project for VBS this year was local, working with the owner of Kerkhoven’s southside trailer court to update the property’s basketball court & playground equipment.

This group disassembled two swing sets, two basketball poles, sandbox and mowed the lawn and cleaned around the basketball court.

This group put up the new swing set. They also filled a dumpster with garbage and served a meal to the helpers

One day the new basketball poles were cemented in the ground. Another day a group dug away the sod from around the swing set and filled it with pea rock. Still left to do is applying pavement sealer to the basketball pad and installing two backboards.

A HUGH THANK YOU to everyone that has helped with this VBS Mission Project! We are excited to be so close in being done. Town & Country VBS which includes the following churches: Bethel Baptist-Kerkhoven, Evangelical Free-Kerkhoven, Hope Lutheran-Sunburg, Kerkhoven Lutheran and Salem Covenant-rural Pennock.

LUTHERAN CAMPUS MINISTRYserving Ridgewater College, Willmar

We are off and running at the Ministry Center already! Classes began on Monday, August 27 and we served our first FREE LUNCH of the 2018-2019 school year. We were blessed and amazed to have over 170 students join us for lunch! Over 250 people stopped in to the center to see what we are up to!

Thanks be to God for the Kerkhoven ladies kitchen crew who brought over a dozen crock pots and pans to serve all of these hungry folks 😁 . We are so thankful for our volunteers! If you would like to gather a group and bring lunch to the Ministry Center, please let me know. We have a few open spots on the calendar. If bringing a meal is overwhelming, how about a few batches of cookies? A few pans of bars? Again, let me know.

In addition to our FREE LUNCHES, we also host a FOOD PANTRY that our students can visit when their dollars aren’t stretching as far as they need to. If you could help with a donation or two for the Food Pantry, we would be so grateful. Here is a list of the items that go quickly:+Macaroni and Cheese +Chicken Noodle Soup +Tomato Soup +Peanut Butter +Butter Crackers +Jelly or Preserves (plastic jars please) +Pop Tarts +Spaghetti Noodles & Spaghetti Sauce (cans, please) +Granola Bars +Fruit Bars +Canned corn or green beans +Canned fruit or individual fruit cups

Bible Studies, Fellowship Groups, and Caring Conversations Groups will be starting soon. If you would like to bring a study or discussion to the center, call me!

Most importantly, if you would keep our students, faculty, staff, and administration in your prayers for a successful year. Thank you!

Please text or call me with any questions or to volunteer.

Blessings and JOY,

Pastor Amy Juel, Chaplain, Lutheran Campus Ministry 320.282.2225

We will eat lunch and shop at the Mall of America. Then we will go to Sharing & Caring Hands (Mary’s Place) and play with the children. Then we will go to Great Wolf Lodge Adventure Park. Stay overnight in the cities. On Sunday we will go to a church service in the cities. Each youth must fill in a registration form along with $30.00 made out to Kerkhoven Lutheran League to reserve their seat on the bus. (Each Luther League youth will get $25.00 in spending money from Luther League that day.) You can invite a couple of friends who would need to pay $35.00 towards the hotel cost. They will not get any money from Luther League.

Registration forms will be sent by e-mail and some will be by the church office. Give the forms and check to Loretta Falk as soon as possible since the hotel wants to know how many people are coming. Call Loretta at 979-6959 if you have any questions.

Hello parents:

The first day of Sunday school is on September 9th… it is coming up quick! Here are some bullet points to keep in mind:

Sunday school is from 10:10 -11. Choir is upstairs from 10:10 to 10:30 and classroom time is from 10:30 – 11:00.

Sometimes choir can get a little crazy, so please visit with your children about appropriate behavior. We welcome any extra help to supervise during choir. Eric Rudningen plays his guitar for choir and it is hard for him alone to make (continued next column)

As soon after school starts that we have the number of backpacks that are needed we will begin to pack and deliver them to the KMS schools every Friday. Our partnership with Second Harvest Heartland continues so we will be able to continue to purchase most of the food necessary for this ministry from them. We continue to have a balance in our account that should carry us through many months.

As noted previously in the update from Pastor Amy Juel, KLC has already served one free meal at the Campus Ministry Center. We saw more students than we have seen previously and we did run out of food. Please consider helping with this service project by either donating casseroles or food items that we can use to make roasters of food as the numbers each year climb. There is a sign- up sheet between the offices. The students also appreciate homemade baked items. We would love to have you join us on campus and experience the joy of seeing and visiting with these students.

Please pass on any ideas you have for “God’s Work . Our Hands” project. We are looking for project ideas to do on an ongoing basis.
