Organization and goals

Smart City Bærum is a partnership between the municipality and the private sector in Bærum. Our members represent the fields of technology, real estate, urban development and transport.

Our projects have to be profitable and show a reduction in greenhouse gasses. The outcomes of the project should be attractive in a way that citizens will want to use them.

The public/private partnership is a new way of thinking, and we know that many projects have contribute to new green business development

We mainly focus on Smart energy Smart transport Smart governance

Smart EnergyTwo of the world's most energy efficient buildings are located in Bærum. They have both achieved the highest environmental classification Breeam-Nor Outstanding.

Fornebu S – the shopping mallThe building is owned and run by KLP Eiendom, housing more than 80 shops and restaurants. Among the features that helped the building achieve its rating was district heating and cooling using seawater for heat exchange; a green roof that replicates the nationally rare natural habitat in the Fornebu area; and 1,043m2 of solar cells producing 140 000kWh/year. The building is a passive-house and the energy use is 40% less than the building regulations require. Powerhouse – a renovated office building from the 1980sThe building is owned by Entra and the tenant is Asplan Viak. By optimising and combining existing technologies in new ways, the office building from the 1980s was renovated into an energy positive building. After the renovation, the buildings’ energy needs have been reduced by 90%. Local energy is produced by photovoltaics installed on the roof and ground wells in the park outside the building, which provide heating for radiators, water, ventilation and cooling. A hydrogen station powered by surplus renewable energy from the Powerhouse is in the planning phase.

Smart transportSmartCity Bærum projects aim to increase more environmentally friendly transport. CarpoolAt Fornebu two carpools have been established. The cars are available for those who normally use other forms of transportation to get to work, but need a car for a few hours, perhaps to go to a meeting. You hire a car using an app on your smart device. The carpools are also available for the citizens of Fornebu.Bike poolA bike pool with 100 bikes similar to the ones we are using today will be established in June. Access to the bikes will be through sms and an app. In our next project we want to connect the bike-app to other public transport apps. Because of restrictive regulations concerning outdoor advertising at Fornebu, the bikes are financed in a partnership between several companies, the Akershus county and the municipality.Low carbon fuelBærum has one of the highest densities of electric cars in Europe. Hydrogen – and renewable surplus energyIn the next year we expect two hydrogen stations to be built here in Bærum. One of them will be connected to a plus-house building called Powerhouse. The surplus energy from the rooftop photovoltaic will be used to produce hydrogen. We expect that the solution will attract international interest and generate new business solutions.

Self- driving busIn October this year we plan to start a pilot project with a self-driving bus at Fornebu.Smart governanceSmartCity Bærum projects aim to improve public services.

Smart Parking is a project looking into Big Data. 120 parking sensors show where there are available parking spaces. You can use your smart device locating and pay the parking fee at the same time. This reduces unnecessary driving when searching for parking spaces.

The project is a partnership between the municipality, Q-free, EasyPark, Microsoft and IBM. Making data available is an important factor contributing to business development.
