Part 1: Warm Up “Nunchi Game”. This is a competitive but also cooperative game commonly played in Korea classrooms (with any subject not just language), so it needs no explanation if the learners are Korean. If not, the instructions are as follows:

The instructor writes vocabulary words on the board in any order in a single column from top to bottom. See Appendix B for a list of the vocabulary words.

All learners will be seated at their desks, looking at the board. The class has to cooperate to read all words from top to bottom before the timer runs out (try 1 minute or so). But everyone must read at least 1 word and if more than one learner speaks at the same time, they are “out”. Then, play a second round using picture vocabulary cards instead of the written words. Finally, play a third round using L1 translations of the vocabulary words, but the learners must say the word in English.Part 2: “From Head to Toe” Big Book Whole Class Shared Reading Session. With the class gathered in a small circle, the instructor will present “From Head to Toe” in Big Book format for the class, making actions and asking questions about the body parts, colours, and sizes that the learners see on the pages of the Big Book.

If a proper Big Book is not available, the normal sized version can be photographed and uploaded into a Powerpoint for presentation on the classroom monitor.

Part 3: Story Reconstruction Pair Work. In addition to the body part picture cards from Part 1, the instructor should prepare a card for every animal mentioned in the story. These cards should be mounted on magnets. Working in pairs and with personal sized magnetic whiteboards, learners will put the animals in order from first to last and then put the body part that was mentioned in the story next to that animal.

After allowing the learners to attempt on their own, the instructor can play “From Head to Toe” song (slow version) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xxyZSdYEmM and the learners can correct their story sequences on their own.Part 4: Story Reconstruction Race. In pairs the learners turn over and scramble all the cards. The instructor says, “start” the learners race to reconstruct the story from start to end by matching up the animals and the associated body parts in the correct order.Part 5: Story Remix. Learners take turns being the announcer. The announcer says an animal and a body part, and the listening learners will quickly match up that body part with that animal and hold it up in the air.
