Dear Teachers

Thank you for agreeing to use the HearGlueEar device in the classroom – here is our very simple guide to activating the device. If you have used an ‘FM’ device before, then this works in a very similar manner.

The reason the child needs to use the device:

The device is for children who have fluid in the middle part of their ear. The middle part of the ear has the function of amplifying sound/ making sound louder. For the child it feels a bit like their ears are blocked, or as if they are walking around with their fingers in their ears all day. They can hear speech but it is not always clear, particularly if there is background noise. This headset directs sound along the childs cheekbones, bypassing the middle part of the ear, and accessing the normal part of their inner hearing instead. Therefore with the headset, we anticipate that the child hears more easily/ clearly.

How to operate

1. Remove all staff badges, scarves or necklaces that may touch the microphone or interfere with it. Clip it either way round onto your clothing.

a. b.

2. TURN THE HEADSET ON.

a. EITHER …Ask the child to turn on their headset – the parent may have already done this. OR…

b. If you need to help by turning the headset on for the child, the easiest thing to do is to place the headset on your own cheekbones (as in the picture) and press the power (on/off button) so that you can hear the headset say “welcome to Trekz Titanium”. Immediately take your finger off the power (off/on) button. Below is the picture of the power (on/off) button.

3. TURN THE MICROPHONE ON. Slide the button on the right side of the microphone UPWARDS (you will see a red dot as you slide the button) to turn the microphone on. A blue light will first appear on the front of the microphone. Then you will see some red flashes of light. This is helpfully telling you how charged the microphone is. If it flashes 4

red flashes that means it is well charged, if there is one red flash, charge is low, so you can remind the pupil to charge the microphone when they get home (see the section below about charging the devices).

When you turn it ON you will see the red dot.

4. After the red flashes which indicate how charged the microphone is, the microphone returns to show a blue light that flashes slowly. You will then hear through the headset, a voice say ‘connected’.

5. Then firmly press down the middle button, (the middle button is between the + and - buttons on the front of the microphone. The middle button has a black dot on it), for 1 second. The picture below Image shows the middle button with a black dot on it.

You will now see the blue flashing light has changed to a double flashing light every time it flashes (instead of a slower single flashing light as before), you have now turned the intercom system on: So the child will now be able to hear you through the microphone (sometimes it takes half a minute to connect so don’t panic if it doesn’t work immediately) and if you press it again you will turn it off – make sure you agree a signal with the child to confirm they can hear you.

6. The middle button (the one with the black dot on it) on the microphone , is the only button you now need to use. If the microphone shows a blue double flashing light, the microphone is working and the child can hear you through the headset. If you don’t want the child to hear you (for example you are talking to a different child) simply press that middle button again - the microphone will show a slow single blue flashing light - and the child will not be able to hear you. The middle button simply is the on/off button for the microphone (your voice) to be connected to the child’s headset.

7. Don’t forget to turn off the intercom (centre button) or turn off the microphone device (slide button on the side) at the end of teaching and before entering the staff room!

Thanks again – any problems speak to the parent or email [email protected]

SUMMARY

This is a very simple process once you have done it once or twice. So a quick reminder would be …

Then turn the microphone on (slide slide button) after the red flashes the headset will say ‘Connected’.

Then press the middle button on the microphone (and look for the blue double flashing light) so that the child can hear you.
