SAINT OF THE WEEK:

St. patrick of Ireland

March 9

There are many legends surrounding St Patrick, but for certain he was humble and courageous. In the fifth century, despite being captured by pagan Irish raiders and sold as a slave at age 16, he escaped captivity years later and fled to France where he studied the faith and became a bishop at age 43. In a dream, he felt called to return to Ireland to preach and convert the pagans. He ordained priests, set up dioceses, founded monasteries and spread widely the word of God throughout Ireland. In fact, Irish missionaries were sent abroad to Christianize Europe. St Patrick was a man of action with a rocklike belief in God and his vocation.

Weekly Message on the Readings for the third Sunday of Lent

Deacon Rob

Today’s liturgy centers around water. Throughout the Bible, water plays a pivotal point in God’s plan. From Genesis where God hovers over the waters to where God first uses the waters of the Great Flood to purify the Earth, water remains a vibrant reminder of God’s presence. This element comes into special play even at the crucifixion of Christ when water comes from the side of the Messiah as His heart is pierced by a Roman soldier’s lance. In many cases, water is the one substance by which God destroys evil and makes new life according to His Divine Plan. In fact, it is through water that Christians die to self in Baptism and are made one in Christ and co-heirs of heaven. It is not surprising, then, that water has become an essential element in God’s Divine Plan and Covenant. It is one of the most significant elements in all of God’s creation. Water has always been indispensable for mankind.

In our first reading from the Book of Exodus, the despondency and fickleness of the Israelites during their journey to the Promised Land is revealed. They have been journeying a long time when their source of water disappears. Instead of trusting in God, the people grumble and complain to the extent that they claim to have been better off as captives of the pharaoh and wish to return to that status for their daily needs. Hearing their complaints, God gives them water; however, due to their lack of faith in Him who has intervened numerous times for them, God decides that they will not all enter the Promised Land. Their faithlessness and fickleness resulted in their testing of God’s love which had been constant all the time. Thus, God uses water here to demonstrate His faithfulness to us despite our loss of faith in Him.

Today’s second reading from Paul to the Romans addresses this same faithfulness of God that is, now, bestowed upon the all the followers of Christ. Christ’s self-sacrifice for us sinners is the ultimate act of God’s love for us. It stands as the epitome of what love really is. Paul uses terminology that depicts grace flowing like water from the perfected Adam, Jesus, in this sacrifice of agape love. It is this same agape love that must be exhibited by Christians. Paul proclaims that grace demands action by the recipients. According to Paul, faith and action must flow, like water, throughout society for the sake of the Kingdom.

This same message of a living grace or “living

water” flowing from Christ is the core of the message from the woman at the well in today’s

Gospel of John. Once again, water is used to convey the existence of an intimate relationship between God and mankind. The encounter between the woman and Jesus is problematic from the start. First, the woman is a Samaritan, a disgraced and sinful person from a disgraced and sinful people in the minds of all Jews. Secondly, she is alone and possibly shunned by her own people due to her

many sins. Despite these obstacles and isolation, Jesus addresses her, first asking for a drink of water. The woman responds despite the bellicose status between the two nations. She engages in a dialog in which Jesus reveals his status as the Messiah and the “living water”. Christ acknowledges the long and sinful status of the woman. This knowledge and acceptance of it by Jesus brings her to believe in him and causes her to rush back to the town revealing her discovery of the Messiah in Jesus. She explains how the Lord knew all of her past and revealed himself to be the Messiah. In turn, the people go forth to find him and see for themselves. Simultaneously, Jesus’ apostles return and are shocked by what they see. Nevertheless, they offer Jesus food which he declines claiming he has eaten other “food” of which they are not aware. When the townspeople arrive, Jesus’ Messianic nature is revealed to them, too, after hearing the Word from Jesus.

This encounter reveals God’s love for us and the extent that He will go to save all. As couples often met at wells, the social area in the ancient world, deep relationships were often formed. Today’s liturgy reveals God meeting his “bride”, us, at the well as He yearns for a closer relationship with us. This incident reveals that God, not only intended to save the Jews, but the Gentiles as well. No single and sinful person is beyond His reach. The Woman at the Well reveals that even the most damaged and shunned person is able to encounter Christ and bring others to him if they are willing to accept his overtures. Holy Mother the Church wants us to recognize that great Divine proposal. She wishes us to share that same message with our world, today. Just as Christ knew the sinfulness of the woman at the well, so too, God know our great sinfulness and still offers Himself to us in love.
