2018-2019 Club Service Award

Shaun Morrow

For over forty years, our club has presented a Club Service

Paul Harris Award. When a member is recognized with our

club service award, we know that two things have happened:

1. The club has purchased a Paul Harris Fellowship from the

Rotary Foundation in the recipient’s name.

2. Previous recipients of the Club Service Award conducted a

special meeting to select a very deserving member.

This year I have been asked to represent our previous Club Service Award honoree’s to announce this

year’s selection. Many Rotary clubs give an annual “Rotarian of the Year” award. Not the Mighty Rotary

Club of West Sacramento. We tend to do things a bit different on this side of the river. Because our Club

Service Award is more than that. Rotarians that have earned this honor have year after year offered ex-

traordinary service to Rotary, with a particular emphasis on service to our own club. Often they have worked

behind the scenes, serving for a year or more in several key positions, planned social events, organized

fundraisers, served on the Board of Directors and in a few causes have served as club President. As a

group, they have consistently and generously given us their most valuable possessions, their time and en-

ergy.

These efforts did not go unnoticed and as a result, they have earned our club’s highest honor. The fact that

this selection is made by the award’s previous winners makes it all the more significant.

This year’s honoree is a prime example of a Rotarian who works behind the scenes year in, and year out.

Over the years he has been our Club Presidents go to person when they needed the special talents of this

individual to make a dream, or goal, come into fruition. The Professional odds makers, and bookies’, in Las

Vega, Reno, and Atlantic City, continue to be amazed at this individuals talent for raising money for our club

year in, and year out. While assisting our Club maintain the honor of “Every Rotarian Every Year – EREY”

status.

The Rotary Club of West Sacramento is honored to announce SHAUN MORROW as the 2018 - 2019 Club

Service award winner.

Meet the President-Elect-Elect

Mr. John Raney The Immediate Past President is charged with running the selection process and calling for all the Past Presidents to meet. Past

President Bill Bevier thank you for stepping up to handle the process this year.

This generally occurs in late November or early December. Over the next several weeks they meet to discuss their potential

candidates. A vote is held amongst the past Presidents to select the future leader of our club. The vote and discussion is a closely

held secret amongst the past Presidents and the announcement occurs at the annual club anniversary dinner. Once the selection is

made all ballots are burned with the ceremonial Blue and Gold smoke rising over the Delta to let our esteemed members know

they have a future leader and will not be rudderless in the future as a club.

[Now to announce the ] Club President for the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento for Rotary Year 2020 – 2021. Many

would call this Rotarian a “quiet Rotarian who possesses an amazing sense of humor. President Ronal Reagan was leading our

nation when this individual joined the club. The price of gasoline was hovering around $1.22 when this individual joined the

“Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento”.

This individual was recognized for service to our Club as a Recipient of the Club Service Award Paul Harris in 2008. When I

interviewed him to prepare this announcement he shared the following fun facts about himself:

He tried to grow up in Bakersfield but still has not. He demonstrated political prowess as President of both his grammar school

and middle school. Feels this could mean trouble for our club under his leadership. He was the 1962 San Joaquin Valley tennis

doubles champion. In a poll of his approximately 1,200 student senior class was not chosen most likely to succeed, not chosen

best athlete, not chosen most hansom, but chosen most humorous – feels this too could spell trouble for us. He lettered in tennis

four years as an undergraduate, and has not played since. Got back in good graces with his parents who were both UC Berkley

grads by completing is Master of Science in Engineering at Berkley – Go Bears!!!

He joined the Mighty Rotary Club of West Sacramento

in 1982 at the age of 36, which makes him old –

he asked you to do the math.

It is an honor and pleasure for me to announce

John Raney as our President Elect-Elect for

the Rotary Year 2020 – 2021.

OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the: ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions, the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD: The application of ideal of service by every Rotarian to his/her/ personal, business and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideals of service.

4 Way Test

Of the Things we Think, Say or Do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it build GOODWILL and better FRIEND-SHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?
