Could someone please tell me what happened to fall? It seems that we had a week of it and then winter just took over. Planting tulips and other bulbs wasn’t the pleasant task it normally is. That reminds me, lots of folks have been asking if it’s too late to plant fall bulbs. The answer is no. You can plant daffodils and all the other spring fl ower-ing bulbs until the ground freezes. We need to plant these bulbs in the fall because thy need to get chilled over the winter for at least 8 weeks. I know I don’t have to tell you that our winters last WAY longer than 8 weeks so there’s still plenty of time to get them in. Whether we’ll get any warm days to tackle the task is another question. Maybe we’ll have an “Indian Summer” still. There’s always that hope. Business at my birdfeeder has been a brisk as the weather lately. I’m happy to see that there are lots of Tufted Titmice again. I haven’t seen too many the last few years. I don’t know what happened but they seem to be on the rebound in my area at least.

With the return of cold weather, gardeners must fi nd comfort indoors. My house-plants, which have had to share my attention with their hardy outdoor cousins, now revel in the care lavished on them. Some of them spent the summer outside and have gotten trimmed back to help them adjust to lower light conditions indoors. My collec-tion of miniature geraniums gets groomed and trimmed for the fi rst time in a couple of months. As the sun dives toward the southern horizon, the light in my south windows improves. This will stimulate a new fl owering cycle to cheer me up during the crisp, cold days ahead. For me, having fl owering houseplants makes the winter months more bearable, keeping my spirits up when spring seems far away indeed.

The African Violet is, without question, the most popular of all fl owering houseplants. Their prolifi c fl owering habit and soft, fuzzy leaves have delighted indoor gardeners for years. We’ve all heard stories of great grandma’s prize violet whose descendants are still grown and loved by current family members.

The fi rst requirement to consider for African Violets is light. Violets need very strong but indirect sunlight. Many fi nd that a bright north window is the ideal spot. They also thrive when grown under fl uorescent lights. Violets require daytime temperature of 70 degrees or more and need to be kept above 64 at night to thrive. They like their soil to be kept lightly moist by not soggy wet. You’ll want to use room temperature water to avoid shocking them. Use a good African Violet food about every 4th or 5th watering. Wait until your violets are potbound before repotting. They’ll fl ower more if they fell a bit cramped. Use shallow plastic or ceramic pots; clay pots dry too quickly to be benefi cial to African Violets.

If you keep your house cooler than 64 degrees at night then you may have trouble keeping African Violets. A cousin of the African Violet, the Streptocarpus (AKA: Cape Primrose) is a great alternative. The Streptocarpus has the same indirect light requirement as the African Violet. It should also be kept evenly moist but is far more forgiving than the violet of accidental dryness.

For the very cool home, consider the Cyclamen. These tuberous plants thrive when temperatures drop below 60 at night and won’t be happy if it gets warmer than 65 in the daytime. Keep them barely moist and feed about every forth of fi fth watering dur-ing the fl owering period. It’s not uncommon for a Cyclamen to maintain a fl owering period of three months or longer if not over watered.

These three plants are all excellent candidates for indoor color due to their modest light requirements. Remember, the most common mistake folks make is over water-ing. If your house is dry and you want to provide extra humidity, place the plants in a gravel fi lled tray and fi ll the tray with water. Place your plants on the gravel so the evaporating water passes by the leaves. Be sure the pot isn’t actually sitting in the water but on the gravel above the water. Nothing kills a plant more quickly than drowning.

If you’re lucky enough to have a south-facing window or, better yet, a sunroom, then there’s almost no limit to the fl owering beauties you can grow. Thanks for the read.

Furniture Arranging 101When presented with an empty room in a new home or apartment, most people are a bit appre-hensive about where to start. It can be diffi cult to picture where to place a sofa or how to arrange a chaise lounge.

Although interior decorators may seem to have the knack for knowing where to place furniture, ar-ranging items that are already owned or new furniture is something just about anyone can master.

Before furniture can be placed, certain questions should be answered and room layouts examined. Consider the following:

* Is the room used to travel through to another room? If so, a pathway will need to be left so that walking unhindered is possible.

* Where are the doors and windows located? Furniture should not be placed where it can interfere with a door being opened fully or block too much light.

* How is the room used? For example, furniture shouldn’t be placed in a family room so that indi-viduals constantly have to walk past the television and block watchers’ views. If a room is used as a sitting space, furniture should be geared around bookshelves or a fi replace.

* What space is available? Too much furniture in a room can create the appearance of clutter. It can also make maneuvering around the room diffi cult. Keep furniture scale and quantity in mind when decorating. It may be wise to remove some pieces if the room is overrun with items.

Once the general idea of where furniture will be placed is decided, it helps to take measurements to ensure everything will fi t. There’s little point hefting around heavy furniture only to move it back to its starting position if something doesn’t fi t correctly. Making a reduced-scale model of the room and moving paper cut-outs of the furniture is much easier on the back than moving the furniture itself. There also is software that can be installed on the computer that enables homeowners to see how furniture will look once arranged.

Now that the time has come to place the furniture, follow these guidelines.

* Coffee tables or ottomans should be set 14 to 18 inches away from the couch. Adjust accordingly to meet the needs of homeowners.

* Televisions should be placed at a distance three-times the size of the screen. However, some of the very-large televisions will simply have to be placed closer. Otherwise they could very well be in the next room.

* The average adult requires 20 inches of breathing room for dining room chairs. Allow an addi-tional 16 inches of room for pushing the chairs out to get up from the seat.

* Make sure the edge of a bed is at least 24 inches away from a wall so that sleepers can enter and exit the bed comfortably.

(MS) -- With money tight and house-hold expenses rising, there’s a natu-ral tendency to put your remodel-ing plans on hold. But even if your budget is limited, there’s one home remodeling project that is still afford-able, and fun, too: interior painting.

According to the Paint Quality In-stitute, the do-it-yourself cost of repainting a room is typically well under $100, about the same as taking a family of four to the movies. Unlike a night at the movies, however, the enjoyment of a freshly painted room will last for years.

Start by visiting your local paint re-tailer, asking to see the color display. The fun begins by looking through the color cards and envisioning what

If you’re the decisive type, you might quickly spot the perfect color for the room you’re repainting. For everyone

else, it’s usually best to take a few color cards home to view in the space you want to paint. Once there, you should follow a few time-tested rules.

First, when evaluating color options, con-

ceal all the colors on the card except for the one you are considering. By isolating the color, you’ll get a better idea of how the room will look in a particular hue.

Second, evaluate the color both in day-light and at night when all the light is artifi cial. You may be surprised how different a color can look when lighting conditions change. (Paint colors usually look darker at night, in shadow, and on cloudy days.)

Third, consider when you most often use the room. If you are painting a breakfast area, be sure you like the way the color looks in morning light; but if you’re painting a bedroom, it’s more important that the color be pleasing under artifi cial light.

Fourth, be aware that color tends to be more intense on a large area than a small one. A color that looks just right on a color card may be too dark or too bold when applied to your walls. For safety’s sake, move down one degree of intensity on the card and choose a slightly lighter tint or shade.

Finally, if you are still not certain of your choice of color, buy a small quantity of paint and apply a couple of large swatch-es to the walls. Live with the color for a day or two. You’ll soon know if you

missed the mark or nailed it.

Black ice is a thin coating of ice that forms on roadways and other surfaces. It often occurs from freezing drizzle, wind-blown snow or freezing condensation. Because black ice is so thin, the ice appears to be the same color of the surface material beneath the ice. Therefore, on asphalt roads, the ice can be nearly invisible and black in color.

Many people mistakenly as-sume that New Year’s Eve is the holiday responsible for the most drunk-driving accidents. Although cham-pagne and other alcoholic drinks are often free-fl ow-ing on December 31, New Year’s Eve holds a distant second place to Thanksgiv-ing for the most drunk driv-ing-related fatalities. This is perhaps because Thanks-giving is a family holiday, and many people often feel pressure to drink more when family are around to have a good time.

Annual Pancake FestivalGLENVILLE – The Scotia Rotary Club will hold is annual Pancake Festival on Saturday, No-vember 5 at the Glenville Senior Citizens Center on Worden Road in Glenville.
