Our sister congregation, Chawama Presbyterian Church, in inner-city Lusaka, Zambia ~ Living the Gospel in the midst of the poor, most of whom have been ravaged by HIV/AIDS, Chawama has established prayer houses throughout the community, provided micro loans for small business startups, planted a new congregation, and staffs a Home Health Care program for people with AIDS. Perhaps most importantly, Chawama runs a school for children orphaned by AIDS. For the vast majority of the children, this school is their only opportunity to receive an education. Central has been blessed to come along side our brothers and sisters in Chawama, providing prayer and material support. We send mission teams on a regular basis to work with the Chawama church and gain a better understanding of how we can support their work. Just as importantly, the Chawama church has taught us what it means to serve rather than be served: living joyfully the Great Commandment that we love others as God loves us. Chawama Presbyterian embodies what it means to be a missional/incarnational church. For more info go to www.ccapzambia.org/index.htm or www.presbyterianmission.org/ministries/global/zambia/

CENTRALongmont in the News

The Times-Call ran an article on October 27 about CENTRALongmont and Crossroads School. Because of this article we've received $1,300 to offset the cost of the fire sprinkler system. People in the community have been stopping by the church office to drop off donation checks because they saw the article and like what we are doing. The comment hear the most is "A church that helps the homeless and kids of Longmont is a place that I want to support." The work that the Holy Spirit is doing through our congregation is transforming the lives of people in our community

CENTRALongmont Service Bank

The Diaconate would like to establish and maintain a Service Bank for members of Central Presbyterian Church. A Service Bank is a private list, or database, of individuals within our congregation who possess particular skills or gifts. These people would be willing to volunteer those gifts to help out another member within our congregation in times of hardship. Are you an electrician, plumber, carpenter, tax preparer? Have you acquired

a skill that could help another out during a difficult period?

The Deacons would like to hear from you. Please contact Jennifer Haratsaris ([email protected]) if you would like to be included. A sign-up sheet will also be available at the

information desk in the Fellowship Hall.

What is the Vision? Develop a community center in Longmont - a place where everyone feels welcome and at home, a place where needs are being met, a place where the presence of the Holy Spirit is felt, a place where God’s love is tangible. The vision was approved by Session last spring, and a task force formed to begin implementation. Task Force members include: Donna Ferrey, Stacey Hiatt, Steve Kukic, Evelyn & John Maher, Kent Nelson, Linda & Richard Parker, John Shetter, Wes Trevor, Donna Weaver, Drew West, and David Barker.

What would the community center provide? After school activities/tutoring Vocational training/on-the-job training/community classes Facility use by other organizations Non-profit restaurant/coffee shop/food pantry Space for the Community Children’s Choir (St. Vrain Singers) Space for doctor/dentist to have a free clinic Space to host mission trips, visiting choirs, etc. and house interns

How are we going to do all that? We started one step at a time and are already seeing the vision take shape.

CENTRALongmont’s facilities have always been used by many organizations, with the most recent being Crossroads School. They use 5 rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors for classroom/office space.

A new vocal choir for children in the Longmont community between the ages of 8-15, St. Vrain Singers, is being developed under the leadership of Lee Smoot with rehearsals on Mondays.

Plans are being made for a tutoring program for middle/high school students beginning in 2014

A group, including members from Niwot United Methodist Church, will meet with the owners of the Same Café in Denver to learn more about running a non-profit restaurant

The Task Force is working on a Mission Statement for the Community Center and learning about non-profits

We welcome your questions. Please feel free to contact me or any member of the Missional Outreach Vision Implementation (MOVI) Task Force. Donna Ferrey, Director of Missional Outreach ([email protected])

Day Labor Outreach Breakfast Burritos!

This past Tuesday we handed out 24 burritos at 3 of the 4 day labor centers in Longmont. This was our second outreach

and it was successful. I am thankful for the great men in our church who are committed to being there Tuesday mornings.

The men and women we encounter are very thankful for what we are doing. They even comment that the burritos are tasty. I told one man we would be back next week, and he responded with, “I will make sure I am here!”

The more I follow and encounter Jesus in my life, I realize how present He is in the world. When I experience that presence, I know that we are called as Christians to be a Christ like presence in our community.

Presbyterian Women Thank Offering

Since 1888, Presbyterian women have joyfully expressed gratitude for God's blessings by sharing their blessings with those in need at home as well as

around the world. The Thank Offering funds programs that provide educa-tion, safe housing, clean water, health care, help for prisoners, justice for women, and so much more. This year's offering will help fund 36 projects

around the country and overseas. Please join us in being thankful. Contribute using the blue envelope or write a check to Central with the

notation “PW Thank Offering”.
