After a fantastic 2012 in which the Literature Festival sold a record 140,000 tickets and hosted internationally renowned speakers including Kofi Annan and JK Rowling, I am delighted to share with you all the launch of our 2013 programme. The Times Cheltenham Literature Festival continues to grow and develop and, with your support, we are dedicated to maintaining its position as a cultural beacon in the UK. A major highlight of my first year as Festival Director has been leading the creative and dynamic team that is so dedicated to sharing a joy of literature through this festival. This network extends beyond the Cheltenham Festivals organisation, and includes our advisors and volunteers, and of course, our sponsors and supporters, without whom we simply would not be able to bring the world’s best writers and speakers to Cheltenham. It’s the funding from companies, individuals and grant- giving bodies that enables us to create such a breadth and depth of programme, from the highest profile authors and cultural figures, to nurturing the newest talent in fiction and literature, and running our education work in the community. We are very excited about the programme this year and in this pack you will find plans for events that will stimulate, inform and entertain. If you’re as passionate as we are about the on-going development of the Festival, I hope that you or your organisation can support us this year. By getting involved you will receive some fantastic brand exposure and unique hospitality experiences, as well as joining the vibrant network that makes this Festival happen, and knowing that you are supporting the future of something very special. This year’s Festival theme explores memory and how it shapes us both individually and as a society. November 2013 marks the 100th anniversary of the first publication of Marcel Proust’s Remembrance of Things Past and as we’re also approaching the centenary of the start of the First World War in 2014, we consider the fundamental role memory plays in underpinning our lives, our wider culture, our interpretation of the past and our shaping of the future. Memory is fundamental to our own sense of identity and a theme which offers fertile ground for the Festival to explore, especially in our events focussing on autobiography and memoir, poetry, history and of course fiction. 2013 also marks the anniversary of several key political scandals – Profumo, Watergate and the death of John F Kennedy – often described as ‘where were you when…?’ historical moments. Yet people’s ‘memories’ of such events are inconsistent and variable – what they’re ‘remembering’ is a creative blend of personal experience and information from elsewhere. This is fascinating territory for discussion which we’ll explore in our history events this year. We also have a French focus – with events on Proust and Camus, a look at contemporary French life and politics, food and drink and an exploration of the fascinating Franco-British relationship. From fiction to neuroscience, politics to poetry, the exploration of memory will be at the heart of this year’s Festival, infusing debates, performances, storytelling, residencies and workshops with a theme offering the scope for a rich and diverse Festival experience.

THEME FOR 2013: MEMORY

All of these events would provide fantastic opportunities for businesses, individuals or even groups of friends to sponsor. FESTIVAL STUDY DAYS Following the sell-out success of last year’s Philosophy Day, we are planning three new study days giving an in-depth look at Psychology, the Classics and French fiction with thought-provoking debates, fascinating talks and informal feedback sessions. Potential areas include: Psychology Day – led by the Festival’s new Psychologist-in-Residence, Professor Dany Nobus, Chair of Psychology and Psychoanalysis at Brunel University. Classics Day – explore Ancient Greece and Rome through their history and culture with some of the country’s leading specialists in the field. French Fiction – our potential study mornings / afternoons will focus on the fascinating lives and work of Proust and Camus. WORLD WAR ONE: TELLING THE STORY Two leading storytellers - Nick Hennessy and Hugh Lupton - join us at the Festival to workshop and showcase a powerful new storytelling commission exploring the everyday lives of soldiers in the trenches of World War One. Using archive material – as well as family memories contributed by Festival audiences in a special workshop event – they showcase their wartime stories in an extraordinary afternoon performance. LIVE ON STAGE & WHAT’S IT LIKE TO BE..? Following the success of our Times Live event last year, these two new series offer unique views behind the scenes of some of the country’s leading organisations. Our Live events bring to the Festival stage key decision-making meetings - that are usually only held behind closed doors - whilst What’s It Like To Be…? gives us the opportunity to hear what it’s really like to be in the hot seat by exploring the lives of those with unique roles in business and the arts.
