This conference is a sequel to several other similar Conferences held every year since 2012. Over the past five conferences, ICAST participants came from 10 Universities all over Ethiopia, Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Water, Irrigation, and Electricity, GIZ, Ministry of Mines, and Bahir Dar Agricultural Mechanization, and Food Science Research Center. There were also many international participants from USA, Taiwan, South Africa, and Canada to deliver plenary and oral presentations. All past conferences were well attended with great success. The objective of this conference is to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, as well as industrial professionals of Ethiopia and participants from Africa and all over the world to present and discuss their research result, innovative works and development activities in Science and Technology. The conference will include keynote/plenary speakers, oral presentation within different parallel sessions and posters to allow attendants to present their scientific results on different thematic areas of science and technology. We hope that many young engineers and scientists will take the opportunity to participate in this event and have scientific discussions with some of the leading scientist in science and technology. Welcome Message

Dear ICAST-2018 Participants,

On behalf of the Organizing Committee, it is a great honor and pleasure to welcome you to the 6th

International Conference on Advancement of Science and Technology held in Bahir Dar, Ethiopia.

This conference is a sequel to several other similar Conferences held every year since 2012. Over

the past five conferences, ICAST participants came from 10 Universities all over Ethiopia,

Ministry of Science and Technology, Ministry of Water, Irrigation, and Electricity, GIZ,

Ministry of Mines, and Bahir Dar Agricultural Mechanization, and Food Science Research Center.

There were also many international participants from USA, Taiwan, South Africa, and Canada to

deliver plenary and oral presentations. All past conferences were well attended with great success.

The objective of this conference is to provide a platform for researchers, engineers, as well as

industrial professionals of Ethiopia and participants from Africa and all over the world to present

and discuss their research result, innovative works and development activities in Science and

Technology.

The conference will include keynote/plenary speakers, oral presentation within different parallel

sessions and posters to allow attendants to present their scientific results on different thematic

areas of science and technology. We hope that many young engineers and scientists will take the

opportunity to participate in this event and have scientific discussions with some of the leading

scientist in science and technology.

The City of Bahir Dar, one of the leading tourist destinations in Ethiopia, with a variety of

attractions in the nearby Lake Tana and Blue Nile River, will make your participation in ICAST-

Prof. Mammo Muchie

DST-NRF SARChI Chair in Innovation Studies

Tshwane University of Technology, South Africa

Brief Biography: Professor Mammo Muchie received his undergraduate degree from Columbia

University, USA and his DPhil from the University of Sussex, UK. He is currently a DST-NRF research

chair in Innovation Studies at the Faculty of Management Sciences, Tshwane University of Technology

and an “A” rated research Professor in South Africa. He is a fellow of the South African Academy of

Sciences, the African Academy of Sciences and the African Science Institute. Prof. Muchie has widely

published in the areas of international political economy, development economics of innovation and the

making of African systems of innovation and new technologies and development. Since 1985, he has

produced over 400 publications, including books, chapters in books, and articles in internationally

accredited journals and entries in institutional publications.

Prof. Chiuhsiang Joe Lin

Department of Industrial Management,

National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.

Title: User experience design and its role in innovation

Brief Biography: Dr. Chiuhsiang Joe Lin is Professor in Department of Industrial Management, National

Taiwan University of Science and Technology. His research interests are in the areas of ergonomics, safety

and health, biomechanics, human machine interface, and hi-tech product user interface design. In

particular, he has conducted research and published in major journals in human motion analysis and

simulation, musculoskeletal disorders and low back pain prevention with manual materials handling

control, design of computer workplace, design of human computer interface, usability and user experience

design, virtual reality interactions. He was President of Ergonomics Society of Taiwan in 2009 and 2010,

Secretary General of Chinese Institute of Industrial Engineers, Secretary General of Chinese Association

of Ergonomics Societies, and council member of International Ergonomics Association. Professor Lin has

published over 110 research journal articles. He has advised more than 100 graduate students at PhD and

Master levels. He received his Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1995 and

M.S. from the Pennsylvania State University at University Park in 1991.

Prof. Zhiyan Pan

Dept. of Environmental Engineering

Zhejiang University of Technology, China

Brief Biography: Zhiyan Pan is a Professor and Director of Institute of Environmental Chemical

Engineering, School of Environmental Engineering, Zhejiang University of Technology, Hangzhou, China.

His research is interest is in the areas of supercritical fluids technology and its application, solid wastes

treatment and resource recovery, and wastewater treatment. Prof. Pan holds a PhD in Environmental

Engineering, Zhejiang University.

Prof. Yunghsiang S. Han

Distinguished Professor

School of Electrical Engineering & Intelligentization

Dongguan University of Technology, China

Title: Novel FFT over Binary Finite Fields and Its Application to Reed-Solomon Erasure Codes

Brief Biography: Prof. Han is a Distinguished Professor at the School of Electrical Engineering &

Intelligentization at Dongguan University of Technology, China. Prior to that, he held academic

appointments at the National Chi Nan University, and National Taipei University, and National Taiwan

University of Science and Technology Taiwan. Dr. Han's research interests are in error-control coding,

wireless networks, and security. Dr. Han has conducting state-of-the-art research in the area of decoding

error-correcting codes for more than twenty years. He has published several highly cited works on wireless

sensor networks such as random key pre-distribution schemes. One of his publications has been cited more

than 2000 times. He also serves as the editors of several international journals. Dr. Han was the winner of

the Syracuse University Doctoral Prize in 1994 and a Fellow of IEEE. One of his papers won the prestigious

2013 ACM CCS Test-of-Time Award in cybersecurity to recognize its significant impact on the security

area over ten years. Prof. Han received B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Electrical Engineering from the National

Tsing Hua University, Taiwan, and Ph.D. from the School of Computer and Information Science, Syracuse

University.
