My dear Parishioners,

Today we begin our Novena of Sundays in preparation for the

Feast of our Patron, St. Paul of the Cross, and also have the Kick-

Off for our 2017-2020 Capital Campaign. What a fortunate coinci-

dence! Just recently we joined Passionists throughout the world in

celebrating the 150th anniversary of the canonization of St. Paul of

the Cross in grand fashion. As I reflect on that celebration, I ask

myself how will this 63- year- old parish continue to revere this

great saint in the years ahead? Will it still be here in ten or twenty

years or fifty years and beyond? The answer, I believe, depends

largely on you, the parish community. Each succeeding generation

carries a serious responsibility to not simply maintain or survive

but to evangelize — to enhance its life and extend its mission to all

in the area. After all, our chief mission as Church is to proclaim

the Good News of Jesus Christ to our world. In order to do so, we

must use all our human and material resources.

In 1954 the Passionists were invited to Atlanta by the Bishop of

Savannah (Atlanta was not a diocese at the time) and built a mag-

nificent parish plant to serve the needs of an ever growing African-

American Community. No expense was spared; they got the very

best. But time has taken its toll. Our facilities as they have aged,

have deteriorated and are in need of “fixing.” The Capital Cam-

paign that kicks off today is intended to enable this community to

do that fixing. As we begin our novena today in honor of St. Paul

of the Cross, we seek his intercession before the throne of God.

Over the years, the example of our holy Patron has inspired this

parish to walk in his footsteps and to do what needs to be done

both spiritually and materially to proclaim the love of Christ Cruci-

fied to our world. The past speaks for itself. Will we now deter-

mine to contribute our share? I believe the answer is “Yes!”

—Fr. Jerome, C.P.

20º DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO 20 DE AGOSTO DE 2017

Page 4

- P. Patricio, C.P.
