Welcome! Are you new?
Welcome to our Totus Tuus Team
teaching Vacation Bible School!
From the Pastor
Miriam Owen
Donald E. Owen Sr.
One of the hardest parts of being a priest is accompanying Christians whose marriages
and friendships have fallen apart. Recently, I read the story of a woman who decided to
take 1 Corinthians 13 as the blueprint for dealing with the breakdown of her marriage,
and how that journey went on and ended up. Shauna Shank’s book A Fierce Love is a
powerful testament to perseverance in the midst of marital chaos, infidelity and disap-
pointment.
Now, as a Protestant, she does not entirely share our Catholic teaching on divorce, so
caveat to those of my flock who might read this book. But, I can say it was very power-
ful to see how making the Word of God the vehicle for our actions can change us and
others forever!
As Catholics, we believe that marriage is not just a contract between two people who promise to stay to-
gether until they decide not to do so anymore. It is a sacrament, a covenant that is formed by God be-
tween one man and one woman for life. As a Church, we have a vested interest, not only in preparing
couples well for marriage, but also in creating a space for family life to flourish as families find support in each other for holiness.
At the same time though, as much as the Church has a horror of divorce and all of the mess it creates, we
have a duty to make sure that those who have gone through the dissolution of their relationships have a
place of healing in the Church. The Church, Pope Francis is fond of saying, is a field hospital for sinners.
And, it is on the battlefield of sex, marriage and family life that the culture of death has claimed a lot of its
victims in our time. The Church must be a place of authentic encounter and dialogue, but also of healing
pardon and reconciliation. Being a Catholic is not just a matter of being baptized and showing up to Mass
on Sundays. It is a life-long purification of the heart so that we may love as Jesus loves. And, my friends,
that entails embracing the cross of suffering in our relationships and being carried by that cross to heaven.
The world needs our example of sacrifice and abandonment to the divine will. Shauna Shank found in her
Christian faith the resolve and the grace to weather the worst season of her life. May the Word of God
penetrate our hearts to do the same.
Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way;
it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things,
believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. 1 Cor 13: 4-7

Total Consecration to Jesus through Mary is a beauti-
ful exercise to increase your spirituality and ability to
truly serve our Lord Jesus Christ. The basic premise
set forth by St. Louis Marie de Montfort is simply that
Jesus came into the world through Mary and that for
us to always be assured of being close to Jesus, even
closer than ever before, we should go through
Mary. Consecration means to set aside for a sacred
purpose. Mary’s life was set aside for the sole purpose
of serving our Lord. By following her example, we,
too, can completely give ourselves to Christ in a fun-
damental way that consecrates us to Him. We give our
lives to Him in service and love.
Information Sessions on Total Consecration to Jesus
through Mary will be held after the 8a, 10a, and 12noon Masses on Sunday, 6 August, in Croghan Hall.
Come have a cup of coffee and learn how consecra-
tion can enrich your spiritual life.
