The following information should be helpful in completing your ninth grade
schedule:
1. Every freshman student must carry a minimum of thirty-five credits per year. Full-year courses are equal to five (5) credits.
2. English, Physical Education/Health, Mathematics, World Studies and Science courses must be
included in the schedule of every ninth grade student. It is recommended the student’s World Language requirement begin in ninth grade.
3. For some students, a shared time program is available at the Somerset County Vocational School.
Academic courses are taken at Somerville High School and vocational courses are taken at
Somerset County Vocational School. Applications to the vocational school are made directly to
Somerset County Vocational School (908) 526-8900. Applications are available through
the Somerville Middle School or Branchburg Central School Guidance Offices.
4. Two years ago, SHS established the Somerville Academy for Liberal Arts (SALA), which is a partnership between SHS and RVCC. Through this four year program, students earn both a High School diploma and an Associate’s Degree. Additional information can be found on page 5.
5. For those opting not to pursue the SALA option, ninth grade honors classes at Somerville High School offer a rigorous program leading to advanced placement college academic credit in English, French, Spanish, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. For additional information, please refer to the Somerville District Website www.somervillenjk12.org
6. Please understand that the master schedule for the school, including the number of sections of each course, and ultimately, the number of teachers in each department, is set in accordance with the subject requests made by students. In addition, certain courses may not be scheduled due to insufficient enrollment.
7. Although the master schedule is created in pursuit of 100% fulfillment of student requests scheduling conflicts inevitably arise and students need to make decisions. The guidance
counselors can help the students make these decisions based on their future goals.

HONORS PROGRAM AT SOMERVILLE HIGH SCHOOL
Somerville offers a complete four-year honors program in English, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, Spanish, French, and Music. Admission is limited to those students who meet the established criteria. The high standards of these courses are the hallmark of the program and serve as indicators of exceptional work to colleges and universities. A year-end average of 80% or better must be maintained in order to continue in the honors program. Advanced Placement (AP) courses may replace honors courses at the 11
th
and 12th
grade levels. The availability of AP courses is determined according to student requests. The honors placement timeline can be viewed at the Somerville District web site www.somervillenjk12.org.
Honors placement for incoming freshmen is based on the following criteria:
A 90% average in the subject area at mid-year of grade 8 (first two marking periods)
An 80% average in Geometry at mid-year of grade 8 (first two marking periods)
A Student Self-Assessment Questionnaire
A signed parent (guardian)/student honors program agreement form
Students who do not meet the grade criteria of a 90% or better at mid-year of grade 8 may
appeal to have his/her grades averaged at the end of the 3rd marking period. At such time, if
the grade average is a 90% or above, the student will qualify for participation

Somerville Academy for Liberal Arts
Class of 2019
The Somerville Academy for Liberal Arts (SALA) is a unique partnership with Somerville High
School (SHS) and Raritan Valley Community College (RVCC) as a result of the Somerville Board
of Education’s strategic planning process. Students who are accepted into SALA earn an Associate
of Arts degree in Liberal Arts from RVCC at a discounted tuition rate. Upon graduation, students
have an opportunity to transfer the associate’s degree to a four-year college or university into which
they gain admission.
Program Goals
The SALA program features a cohort model and learning community as the core of its accelerated
academic experience. The program is a four-year, full-time program that prepares students for the
rigor of a full-time schedule of college coursework in the 11th
and 12th
grades.
Instruction
The concurrent enrollment instructors are both SHS teachers and credentialed RVCC adjunct
professors. Honors classes comprise the 9th
and 10th
grade course work, along with two college
courses each year. At the completion of the four-year program, students earn their high school
diploma from SHS and the associate’s degree in liberal arts from RVCC.
Admission Process
Students are selected for one of the seats based on the following criteria:
Qualify for Honors Algebra II or Honors Geometry and all other subject area Honors
courses going into 9th grade
Initial Assessments of NJASK 6 and NJASK 7
Teacher recommendations (3)
RVCC Final Interview
Students must maintain a 3.0 grade point average to remain in the program
