NO LASTING CITY By Archbishop Gomez

A long and divisive election season is winding down. As Catholics, we know that no party or candidate ever fully represents the Church’s vision of the human person and human society. To live in our secular society as a person of faith is to be always dissatisfied with the limitations of our politics.

Jesus told us that his kingdom was not of this world. His first disciples described themselves as exiles and pilgrims on the earth. “For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come,” we read in the Letter to the Hebrews. St. Paul said that our true citizenship is in heaven. This is true. We can never forget it. Politics today has become for many people a substitute for reli-gious faith. But it cannot be that way with us. The truth is that we are here for a time. When that time passes away, we will meet Our Lord. And in the evening of our lives, as the saints tell us, we will be judged by our love. This does not mean that we abandon this world or withdraw from participating in the workings of our society. We are called to follow Jesus Christ and to live according to his com-mandments and teachings. Just living our faith has deep political and social implications. To live as a Christian means being guided in all things by love, by a sincere desire to see that our neighbors are treated as we want to be treated, with dignity and respect. Our faith is deeply personal. But it is never meant to be only a matter of our private beliefs and behavior. As Christians, we share in Jesus’ mis-sion. We are called to be apostles, missionary disciples who bring the love of Jesus to our neighbors and seek to build his kingdom on earth. The Gospel tells us that God is the Father of all peoples and that every human life is precious and loved by God and that we belong to one another, that we are meant to live together as one human family.

Jesus taught us that every human life is sacred, because God created every person out of love and in his image. The whole Gospel depends on this truth — that God so loved each and every person, that he sent his only Son to die for our sake, so that we might live. These are religious claims. But if we accept and believe these claims, they will change how we live, and how we think about what makes a good society. For the Church, governments and economies, societies, and cultures should have only one purpose — to promote the dignity and flourishing of the human person. This is why the Church believes that the foundation of justice in society begins with protecting and promoting the sanctity of all human life, from conception to natural death. The Church considers marriage and family to be sacred, because these natural institutions are the “cradle” from which life proceeds, and the founda-tion of every human community. The Church also believes that government must protect freedom of religion and conscience as the first freedom. People must be free to believe and to order their lives according to their beliefs. From these foundations — the sanctity of the human person, the sanctity of marriage and the family, the right to conscience and freedom — the Church’s social doctrine builds.

As Catholics, we are called to work for a society where the human person is loved and protect-ed, especially the weakest and most vulnerable human lives. We want a society where all men and women are treated as children of God, with equality, liberty, and justice for all. Catholics must always be engaged in the great struggles in our society — over abortion, euthanasia, the environment; over gender and the family; over racism, criminal justice, immigration, and religious liberty. These are not only political “issues.” They are moral and religious. They go to the heart of the matter: Who is God and why has he made us? What are his intentions for the human person, for the world? We have no lasting city, as the Scriptures say. But we are each called to make our own contribution to building up God’s kingdom on earth. We do that by keeping our eyes on heaven, and trying to live as saints on earth. Let us rededicate ourselves to our vocation to holiness — to loving as Jesus loved, and serving God and one another in our daily lives.

Pray for me this week, and I will pray for you. And let us ask the Blessed Virgin Mary, patron-ess of this great nation, to intercede for us. May she help us to work together to fulfill the beautiful vision of America’s missionaries and founders — one nation under God, where the sanctity of every human life is defended and freedom of conscience and religion are guaranteed.

SIN UNA CIUDAD PERMANENTE Por José H. Gómez, Arzobispo de Los Ángeles

Está llegando a su fin una temporada electoral larga y divisoria. Como católicos que somos, sabemos que ningún partido o candidato representa plenamente la visión de la Iglesia acerca de la persona y de la sociedad humana. Vivir, como persona de fe, en nuestra sociedad secular, implica el quedar siempre insatisfechos ante las limitaciones de nuestra política.

Jesús nos dijo que su reino no era de este mundo. Sus primeros discípulos se describían a sí mismos como exiliados y peregrinos en la tierra. “Pues aquí no tenemos una ciudad permanente, sino que buscamos la ciudad venidera”, leemos en la carta a los Hebreos. San Pablo dijo que nuestra verdadera ciudadanía es la del cielo. Esto es cierto. Nunca pode-mos olvidarlo. Para mucha gente, la política actual se ha convertido en un sustituto de la fe religiosa. Pero no puede ser así en nuestro caso. La verdad es que estamos aquí, sólo por un tiempo. Cuando ese tiempo pase, nos encontraremos con Nuestro Señor. Y en la tarde de nuestra vida, como nos lo dicen los santos, seremos juzgados en el amor. Esto no significa que tengamos que abandonar este mundo o que tengamos que evitar participar en el funcionamiento de nuestra sociedad. Estamos llamados a seguir a Jesucristo y a vivir de acuerdo con sus mandamientos y enseñanzas. El solo hecho de vivir nuestra fe tiene profundas implicaciones políticas y sociales. Vivir como cristia-nos significa dejarse guiar en todo por el amor, por un deseo sincero de buscar que el prójimo sea tratado como nosotros queremos que nos traten, es decir, con dignidad y respeto. Nuestra fe es profundamente personal. Pero nunca se trata de que sea una cuestión únicamente relacionada con nuestras creencias y comportamientos privados. Como cristianos, compar-timos la misión de Jesús. Estamos llamados a ser apóstoles, discípulos misioneros que llevan el amor de Jesús a nuestro prójimo y que busquemos edificar su reino en la tierra. El Evangelio nos dice que Dios es el Padre de todos los pueblos, que cada vida humana es preciosa y amada por Dios y que nos pertenecemos unos a otros, que hemos de vivir juntos como una única familia humana.

Jesús nos enseñó que toda vida humana es sagrada, porque Dios creó a cada persona por amor y a su imagen. Todo el Evangelio depende de esta verdad: que Dios amó tanto a todas y cada una de las personas, que envió a su Hijo único a morir por nosotros, para que pudiéramos tener vida. Estas son afirmaciones religiosas. Pero si aceptamos y creemos en estas afirmaciones, ellas cambiarán la manera en la que vivimos y en la que pensamos acerca de qué es lo que constituye una sociedad buena. Porque la Iglesia, los

gobiernos y las economías, las sociedades y las cultu-ras deberían tener tan solo un propósito: el de promo-ver la dignidad y el florecimiento de la persona huma-na. Por eso la Iglesia cree que el fundamento de la justicia en la sociedad empieza en la protección y promoción de la santidad de toda la vida humana, desde la concepción hasta la muerte natural. La Iglesia considera sagrados el matrimonio y la familia, porque estas instituciones naturales son la “cuna” de la que procede la vida y el fundamento de toda comunidad humana. La Iglesia también considera que el gobierno debe proteger la libertad de religión y de conciencia como la primera libertad. La gente debe ser libre de creer y de ordenar su vida de acuerdo a sus creencias. A partir de estos cimientos —la santidad de la persona humana, la santidad del matrimonio y de la familia, el derecho a la conciencia y a la libertad— se construye la doctrina social de la Iglesia.

Como católicos, estamos llamados a trabajar por una sociedad en la que la persona humana sea amada y protegida, especialmente las vidas humanas más débi-les y vulnerables. Hemos de fomentar una sociedad en la que todos los hombres y mujeres sean tratados como hijos de Dios, con igualdad, libertad y justicia para todos. Los católicos deben siempre participar en los grandes combates que enfrenta nuestra sociedad en cuanto al aborto, a la eutanasia, al medio ambiente, al género y la familia; al racismo, a la justicia penal, a la inmigración y a la libertad religiosa. Estos no son so-lamente “problemas” políticos. Son problemas mora-les y religiosos, que van al meollo del asunto: ¿Quién es Dios y por qué nos ha creado? ¿Cuáles son sus intenciones para la persona humana, para el mundo? No contamos aquí con una ciudad permanente, como dicen las Escrituras. Pero cada uno de nosotros está llamado a hacer su propia contribución a la edificación del reino de Dios en la tierra. Hacemos eso mantenien-do nuestros ojos orientados hacia el cielo y tratando de vivir como santos en la tierra. Volvamos a consagrar-nos a nuestra vocación a la santidad: a amar como Jesús nos ama y a servir a Dios y a servirnos los unos a los otros en nuestra vida cotidiana.

Oren por mí esta semana y yo oraré por ustedes. Y pidámosle a la Santísima Virgen María, patrona de esta gran nación, que interceda por nosotros. Que ella nos ayude a trabajar juntos para llevar a cumplimiento el hermoso proyecto de los misioneros y fundadores de Estados Unidos de tener una nación bajo la protec-ción de Dios, en la cual se defienda la santidad de toda vida humana y se garantice la libertad de conciencia y de religión.

Este domingo celebramos la fiesta de Cristo Rey. Hoy es el fin de año litúrgico o sea para la iglesia. Y el próximo domingo empezamos el año nuevo. Vamos a cambiar de ciclo (será el ciclo B), el evangelista del evangelio dominical será San Marcos.

La idea que tenemos de un rey es más bien negativa. Pa-ra nosotros, un rey es un hombre muy rico que vive en un palacio rodeado de lujos y de sirvientes, lejos del pue-blo sencillo. No podemos pensar que Jesús sea un rey de este tipo. Jesús fue precisamente todo lo contrario de eso. El no vino a ser servido, sino a servir. Vino a mez-clarse con los pobres y con los pecadores y nos vino a hablar de un reino que no era de este mundo. El profeta Ezequiel, en la primera lectura de hoy, nos ayuda a comprender la verdadera naturaleza del reinado de Jesús con la alegoría de Dios–Pastor. Nos dice que Jesús es Rey porque es un líder totalmente entregado a buscar el bien de su pueblo. Nos congrega en su casa para formar una sola familia y nos alimenta incluso con su propio cuerpo porque el Buen Pastor da la vida por sus ovejas. Al final de la primera lectura, el profeta nos dice que Jesús, como un buen pastor conoce a sus ovejas, sabe lo que hay dentro de cada uno de nosotros y un día El será nuestro juez.

De esta manera, las lecturas de hoy nos dicen que Cristo es Rey y Juez. Precisamente porque hoy es el último do-mingo del año litúrgico, la iglesia mira con esperanza hacia el futuro, hacia esa hora en que habrá un cielo nue-vo y una tierra nueva, hacia ese día en que Cristo volverá para ejercer su poder de rey y juzgar. Al principio del primer discurso de Jesús, en la Biena-venturanzas del Sermón de la Montaña, se decía que los pobres, los humildes y necesitados, junto con los perse-guidos, son los ciudadanos del Reino de Dios; en el evangelio de hoy, al final del último discurso de Jesús, se dice que también son ciudadanos del Reino los que estu-vieron de parte de los pobres y los ayudaron con sus bie-nes; no hay distinción entre judíos, cristianos, y paga-mos.

El amor humanitario hacia los necesitados, manifestado en obras de misericordia, supone fe, conversión, pureza de corazón, renuncia, y aceptación de todos. Donde hay amor, allí está Dios y se borran las limitaciones huma-nas. Al final de la vida se nos examinará sobre el amor y no sobre los otros conocimientos; quizás cambien las palabras, pero no la sustancia; estuve oprimido y salieron en defensa de los derechos humanos; estuve indocumen-tado y me dieron asilo; era analfabeto y me enseñaron; minusválido y me ayudaron; tenía hambre y cooperaron en la colecta… visitaron a una tía anciana y soltera; die-ron muebles o ropa para los necesitados; cobraron sola-mente lo justo por sus servicios; fueron amables y servi-ciales en el teléfono y en la oficina; procuraron hacer vida alegre en familia, etc.

El Reino de Dios es Buena Noticia para ciegos, cojos, sordos, y demás necesitados, porque mueve y desafía a los creyentes a ofrecerles ayuda. Cuando ayudamos a estas personas, hacemos que el Reino de Dios sea una realidad en nuestra vida, y entramos nosotros en el Reino.

Reflexión.

Sorprende la facilidad con la que fallamos en reconoce-rá Cristo en nuestros hermanos. ¡Señor, ¿Cuándo te vimos hambriento o sediento, desnudo o encarcelado, solo o enfermo? Solamente los ojos de una fe profunda nos pueden convencer que Cristo está presente no sólo de un modo general en la iglesia, sino también, de una manera parti-cular, en cada individuo. Al compartir esta eucaristía, estamos proclamando que somos una comunidad de hermanos unidos por el amor. Que así como sabemos, por la fe, reconocemos a Cristo en el pan y el vino, que sepamos también reconocerlo en cada uno de nuestros hermanos, especialmente en los que sufren. Son muchos y constantemente están pasando a nuestro lado.
