INFORMATION ON THE CORONAVIRUS VACCINES From the Archdiocese of Los Angeles

As we begin the new year, vaccines against COVID 19 are becoming available to more people in our communities. It is critically important that our faithful and others in our parish communities have an accurate understanding of how these vaccines may be viewed from the perspective of Catholic moral teaching and tra-dition. The Vatican’s doctrinal office, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith (CDF), has determined that it is “morally acceptable” for Catholics to take these vaccines against the COVID 19 Virus. This judg-ment is deeply rooted in the Catholic moral tradition.

On December 21, 2020, the CDF stated: “All vaccinations recognized as clinically safe and effective can be used in good conscience with the certain knowledge that the use of such vaccines does not constitute formal cooperation with the abortion from which the cells used in production of the vaccines derive” … “The morality of vaccination depends not only on the duty to protect one's own health, but also on the duty to pursue the common good… In the absence of other means to stop or even prevent the epidemic, the common good may recommend vaccination, especially to protect the weakest and most exposed.”

Thus, the Archdiocese of Los Angeles strongly encourages Catholics to receive a safe and effective COVID 19 vaccine for the sake of ourselves, our loved ones, and the common good. If some of the faithful choose not to take the vaccine for reasons of conscience, the Vatican says those persons “must do their ut-most to avoid … becoming vehicles for the transmission of the infectious agent.” It is important for us to share this message and encourage our faithful to receive the COVID 19 vaccine when able, so as to ensure the health and safety of our parish communities. We must also help those who chose not to take the vac-cine to take the proper precautions to limit transmission. mates. Social media is a great tool to stay in touch, but there are definitely dangerous aspects to much “screen time” that parents need to be aware about. Social media chal-lenges range from funny and harmless to risky and dangerous — and sometimes

even illegal. If your child has social media accounts, talk to them about making smart choices and about knowing the difference between harmless pranks and seriously

dangerous stunts. Make a pact to discuss anything they see their friends or acquaint-ances doing before they try it out at home.

RECURSOS PARA VACUNAS CONTRA CORONAVIRUS

Por el Archdiocesis de Los Angeles

Al comenzar el nuevo año, las vacunas contra COVID 19 están disponibles para más personas en nuestras comunidades. Es de vital importancia que nuestros fieles y otros en nuestras comunidades parro-quiales tengan una comprensión precisa de cómo estas vacunas puedan verse desde la perspectiva de la ense-ñanza y la tradición moral católica. La oficina doctri-nal del Vaticano, la Congregación para la Doctrina de la Fe (CDF), ha determinado que es “moralmente aceptable” para los católicos ponerse estas vacunas contra el virus COVID 19. Este juicio está profunda-mente arraigado en la tradición moral católica.

El 21 de diciembre de 2020, la CDF declaró: “Pueden utilizarse todas las vacunas reconocidas como clínicamente seguras y eficaces con conciencia cierta que el recurso a tales vacunas no significa una cooperación formal con el aborto del que obtuvieron las células con la que las vacunas han sido produci-das… La moralidad de la vacunación depende no solo del deber de proteger la propia salud, sino también del deber de perseguir el bien común… A falta de otros medios para detener o incluso prevenir la epidemia, puede hacer recomendable la vacunación, especial-mente para proteger a los más débiles y a los más expuestos”.

Por lo tanto, la Arquidiócesis de Los Ángeles alienta encarecidamente a los católicos a recibir una vacuna COVID 19 segura y eficaz por el bien propio, de nuestros seres queridos y por el bien común. Si algunos fieles optan por no vacunarse por motivos de conciencia, el Vaticano dice que esas personas “deben hacer todo lo posible para evitar que se conviertan en vehículos de transmisión del agente infeccioso”. Es importante para todos nosotros compartir este mensaje y alentar los fieles a recibir la vacuna COVID 19 cuando sea posible, a fin de garantizar la salud y seguridad de nuestras comunidades parroquiales. También debemos ayudar a aquellos que optaron por no ponerse la vacuna para que tomen las precauciones adecuadas para limitar la transmisión.

En las calles de nuestras ciudades, hay a veces mani-festaciones de gente que protesta. Caminan y gritan juntos. Pero hay un jefe, el que arrastra, el que habla en nombre de todos, el que saca la cara. Lo llaman el líder. También los pandilleros, los jugadores, tienen quien los dirige. los países tienen sus presidentes. En toda la socie-dad, hay unos que guían y arrastran; otros que siguen. Hay quienes arrastran a la guerra, y quienes arrastran hacia el progreso. Entre los líderes de la historia humana, hay uno excepcional: Jesucristo. Nadie ha tenido l influencia que El ha tenido. Se puso frente a todos, para iniciar el camino. En el texto del evangelio de hoy, el Señor escogió a unos pescadores, ara transformarlos en líderes de la iglesia. Así podemos comprender que la misión de todo cristiano es la de ser jefe en su ambiente.

A la orilla del mar, había unos pescadores. Armados de redes, trabajan arduamente. El mr y la pesca era un desa-fío de todos los días: tempestades, cansancio, trabajo sin éxito, aburrimiento. Era su vida. Un día aparece entre ellos otro hombre que les lanza un nuevo desafío. Dejen las redes, vengan conmigo, yo los haré pescadores de hombres. Sonaba diferente, mucho más difícil y grandio-so, una aventura. Por eso les llamo la atención. Se les despertó la ambición de ser algo más que simples pescadores. Sin pensar mucho lo que eso significaba, aceptaron la invitación y se fueron con El. Cuando los discípulos siguieron al Señor, dejaron redes y amistades. No era mucho, pero lo dejaron. Vieron que podían encontrar algo mejor, más allá del círculo reduci-do de su trabajo y de los suyos.

Al comienzo de su evangelio, San Macos cuenta siete narraciones en las que revela los poderes sobrehumanos de Jesús. El poder de Jesús sobre los corazones se manifiesta cuando llama a sus discípulos, y estos dejan todo para seguirlo; Jesús muestra además un poder espiritual cuando expulsa al demonio y cuando perdona los pecados; el poder de Jesús sobre la naturaleza física se revela en la sanación de todo género que Jesús hace.

Nada ni nadie puede poner resistencia a los poderes de Jesús. Estas siete narraciones están arregladas en una igualdad concéntrica, con la oración de Jesús como clave y centro de sus poderes. Para San Marcos, los cristianos, con Jesús de su parte, lo pueden todo con su oración, y no deben temer a nada ni a nadie, ni siquiera al emperador Nerón, (en nuestro tiempo hay muchos Nerones) el hombre más poderoso de su tiempo que había martiriza-do a San Pedro y San Pablo y a otros cristianos de Roma y que amenazaba a los demás.

El poder de Jesús aparece hasta hoy, en primer lugar, cuando nosotros respondemos a su llamada y mensaje como los apóstoles sin reservas, con prontitud y genero-sidad, con la fe ciega y amor profundo. Jesús muestra su poder arrastrando a las personas a que lo sigan por su propia voluntad, mientras que los tiranos del mundo creen tener poder porque imponen su voluntad a la fuerza o incitan a la gente. El verdadero poder consiste en ganar el corazón y la voluntad de las personas; eso es lo que hace Jesús y lo que debemos hacer nosotros; los medios son el amor, la fe y la oración.

El regalo de la fe no es una lamparita para adornar la casa. Es una llama que debe iluminar en la oscuridad, dentro y fuera de casa. Ustedes son la luz del mundo, dijo el Señor. Los apóstoles dejaron las redes, dejaron as padre para ser líderes de la iglesia. Eso significa que comenzaron a pensar más en grande no sólo en las cosas pequeñas del trabajo y del hogar, sino en los demás, en todos aquellos a quienes uno puede ayudar.

Reflexión

Esta celebración es para cada uno de nosotros otra invi-tación del Señor. Nos lanza otra vez el desafío de ser pescadores de hombres, o sea, trabajar por hacer una sociedad mejor. Dispongamos el corazón para respon-der con generosidad a la invitación del Señor.

Are you 18 years old or older and have not  

received the Sacrament of Confirma on? 

 

Our St. Margaret Mary Adult Forma on program will begin in February and we invite all Adults      (18 years or older) who have not received the     

Sacrament of Confirma on (and/or First Commun‐ion) to par cipate. Weekly Sessions will be online this year (via Zoom) and will last 10 weeks. We plan to celebrate the Sacrament of Confirma on here at our parish in May. Sessions will be held in  English and Spanish. If you’re interested or would like more informa on please call the Parish Center (310/326‐3364) and register. A Team Member will
