Observing the three castles from a dis-tance you might think that they got there just by chance but a closer look at this small town, situated in the middle of the valley floor of the River Ticino, which con-nects the Alps to Lake Maggiore, might make you reconsider. In fact, the capi-tal developed around the fortress in the course of the centuries, acquiring a mul-ticultural identity that derives from its en-viable position and has determined its role as a pulsating cultural hub at the heart of Europe. In the Bellinzona area, where routes to the St. Gotthard, the Lukmanier and the San Bernadino intersect, contrast is a source of vitality and culture, albeit ac-companied by respect for tradition. There is an ongoing dialogue between the medi-eval architecture of the fortifications (World Heritage site) and the old town with its many ancient monuments, and contem-porary works by eminent architects of our times; works which have enhanced the town centre and the entire region.

Bellinzona’s noisy and colourful market has survived for centuries and now con-tinues to exist side by side with major scientific research centres. Numerous museums and theatres guarantee a lively cultural scene and are constantly in com-petition with the squares where openair events and the most famous Carnival in Ticino bring life to the ancient quarters of the old town centre. The silence offered by ancient churches and libraries provide a contrast with the many and varied sports events on offer. Whether you choose to enjoy the delicacies of haute cuisine or prefer to sample the traditional, simpler fare of a “grotto”, the food on your plate and the wine in your glass will have been produced locally. It is this fascinating mo-saic of contrasts and shades that has made Bellinzona worthy of its recognition as a World Heritage Site.

À première vue, les trois châteaux de Bel-linzona semblent avoir été posés là, par hasard, au beau milieu d’une petite ville implantée au coeur d’une plaine où le Rivière Ticino est à la charnière des Alpes et du Lac Majeur. Il n’en est rien, bien au contraire, la capitale et son bourg se sont construits autour de la forteresse. Au cours des siècles, ce coeur qui continue de battre entre le Nord et le Sud, a acquis une identité multiculturelle qui remonte aux origines de son emplacement stratégique. Ces contradictions, caractéristiques des Terres de Bellinzona, à la croisée des che-mins menant au Saint-Gothard, au Lucma-nier et au San Bernardino, sont source de vie et de culture. Un dialogue permanent s’est installé entre l’architecture médié-vale du complexe fortifié (inscrit sur la liste du Patrimoine mondial de l’UNESCO), du bourg, des petits forts et des anciens mo-numents et monastères et les bâtiments modernes, oeuvres des plus grands ar-chitectes, qui embellissent le centre his-torique et la région.

Ici, un marché centenaire traditionnel et bruyant côtoie la recherche scientifique de pointe. Ici, les musées et le théâtre ri-valisent avec les festivals en plein air et le carnaval le plus célèbre du Tessin qui ani-ment les places et les ruelles centenaires. Ici, le silence des églises et des biblio-thèques contraste avec une offre sportive complète et différenciée. Les mêmes vins et les mêmes produits du terroir, dont les saveurs sont héritées des ancêtres, ins-pirent tout autant les restaurants étoilés que les “grott”. Telles sont les Terres de Bellinzona, où diversité et contraste com-posent une mosaïque inscrite dorénavant au Patrimoine mondial de l’Humanité.

Geographical buffer zone between the plain and the mountain chains of Upper Ticino, Riviera is the ideal region if you are looking for a wide range of holiday activities in an area of only a few kilo-metres. Down through the centuries the valley has always given a warm welcome to the peoples of Europe on their way to or from famous passes such as the St. Gotthard and the Lukmanier; nature lov-ers, sports enthusiasts, art and history buffs, lovers of fine food and shopping will find something to satisfy their every whim. The paths on the banks of the wide and peacefully flowing river provide ample opportunities for relaxing walks or energetic hiking, horse-riding and cy-cling; if you are looking for a challenge, then canoeing or rafting may be more up your street, whilst there is no shortage of sports facilities, fitness centres and spas.

Higher up, the smaller valleys are a veri-table goldmine of local specialities, which you can savour in informal style at the “grottos”; or why not pamper your palate at one of the restaurants where old recipes are creatively reinvented by expert chefs. On the banks of the river, silently mark-ing the seasons and the passing of time, stand silent historic dwellings, museums, beautifully frescoed Romanesque monu-ments and small private chapels. In con-trast, Biasca, with its busy streets is a dy-namic town whose industrial zone is a pole of attraction for cutting-edge research. Bi-asca “Borgo”, on the other hand, is where you should go if you feel like browsing in the shops or wish to satisfy a hunger for art. On the outskirts of the town the gran-ite quarries stand like sentinels guarding this delightful crossroads on the “People’s Highway”.

Les rues de Biasca, dont la zone industrielle attire la recherche de pointe, sont plus animées et les magasins du bourg se révèlent être le but idéal pour qui préfère le lèche-vitrines ou qui désire as-souvir son intérêt pour l’art. Tout autour, sentinelles garantes de cette croisée en-chantée, les caves de granit veillent sur le “Chemin des Voyageurs”.

The Blenio Valley is called “the valley of the sun” because its geographical position guarantees good sunshine all year round. Of course, in winter you can ski on slopes which are ideal for a skiing day with the family or, for some meditation on skis, fol-low the snow-covered trails through the woods and alongside mountain streams. However, even in winter, the sunshine and the warm hospitality to be found in this re-gion ensure that temperatures on the hol-iday thermometer stay high whatever the season! The exceptionally sunny climate and a through route to the North via the Lukmanier Pass are factors which influ-ence tourism in this region, attracting vis-itors all year round. With its warm climate and superb natural landscapes, the valley is a paradise on earth to enjoy on foot, on mountain bike or on horseback and an ideal backdrop for a wide and varied range of cultural, sports and recreational events.

The rich history of this corner of Ticino is also kept very much alive through tradi-tions such as the processions which recall the passing of Napoleonic militia, or in the austere exhibition rooms of the small lo-cal history museums. Here and there you will come across the ruins of an old castle. A further attraction of this beautiful valley is the vast choice of attractive accommo-dation available in refurbished agricultur-al buildings, or “rustici”, where you can spend peaceful holidays and enjoy the genuine and intimate flavour of valley life. It’s easy to fall in love with a place where the hospitality is as warm as the climate!

La Vallée de Blenio a pris le nom de val-lée du soleil car il n’y fait jamais froid. Et pourtant en hiver, on peut à la fois skier sur des pistes qui semblent avoir été conçues spécialement pour les familles ou pratiquer le ski de fond, à travers bois et ruisseaux, sur les sentiers enneigés de la plaine. Mais, même en hiver, le froid est relatif car, sur les terres riantes et hospi-talières de Blenio, le soleil brille avec une telle constance qu’on y enregistre, chaque saison, la température la plus élevée au thermomètre des vacances.Ce climat exceptionnel est bien dû au so-leil qui attire les touristes toute l’année et transforme la Vallée de Blenio, qui s’ouvre au Nord sur le Col du Lucmanier, en un paradis idéal pour la détente. Une nature sublime – à découvrir à pied, en VTT ou à cheval – sert également de cadre à une vaste sélection d’initiatives culturelles, sportives et récréatives.

L’histoire de ces terres, intéressante à plus d’un égard, revit à travers les défilés en costume napoléonien, dans les salles de petits musées austères, dans les ruines d’un château. Whoever placed the St. Gotthard in the heart of Europe gave the people of the Leventina Valley a priceless gift: three enchanted worlds. Take your time when visiting the Upper, Middle and Lower Lev-entina and be guided by the strange ef-fect of time in this region. As you travel up the valley from the south you climb 800 metres and go from spring to mid-winter in just over half an hour. These variations in climate influence the vegetation which is universally lush but varies enormous-ly, ranging from palm trees and romantic vineyards to thick pine forests. It isn’t sur-prising therefore that the choice of activi-ties and events on offer for tourists is ka-leidoscopic. Enjoy 650 kilometres of forest hiking paths on foot, on mountain bike or on horseback; take some of the steepest funiculars and most modern cableways in the world to reach vast networks of ski runs, comfortable alpine huts, magnificent lakes and alpine pastures.

Stop to admire the breathtaking views and discover the ancient customs and history of the valley by paying a visit to local muse-ums and some splendid examples of Ro-manesque architecture. A further fascinat-ing aspect of the region is the existence, side by side, of ancient history and the fu-turistic technology currently being used to build the longest railway tunnel in the world.Here there is a hunger for the future, a de-sire for innovation, but at the same time, an ever increasing appetite for a return to the values of traditional cuisine where lo-cal products such as cheeses, wine, pork products, mushrooms and chestnuts ac-quire gourmet status. Qui a eu l’idée magistrale d’implanter le Saint-Gothard au coeur même de l’Eu-rope a fait un immense cadeau aux habi-tants de cette vallée, leur offrant ainsi trois mondes enchantés en un. The Tremola is Switzerland’s longest mo- numental road: a magnificent serpentine of cobbles whose twenty-four hairpin bends link Airolo to the St. Gotthard Pass. This tourist region offers a unique alpine land-scape and is an ideal destination for walk-ers and cyclists, as well as lovers of history and culture, for whom a visit to the Nation-al San Gottardo Museum or to the Sasso San Gottardo is highly recommended, but also a ride with the old stagecoach.

La Tremola est le monument routier le plus long de la Suisse: une charmante route sinueuse de galets qui, avec ses vingt-quatre virages, unit Airolo au Col du Saint-Gothard. Thanks to the Ritom funicular, one of the steepest in the world, in a matter of mo-ments you can immerse yourself in one of the most enchanting and immaculate landscapes in all of Ticino. The Ritom-Pio-ra region is a mountainous area incredibly rich in plants, flowers and animals. Anyone venturing here will discover a landscape of rare beauty, made up of majestic forests, unique ecosystems and sublime alpine lakes. It’s not hard to understand why they call this “the paradise of little lakes”.It is indeed a paradise for lovers of outdoor pursuits, where walkers, cyclists and an-glers can relax and enjoy being immersed in nature. The treats not to be missed are the famous cheese and cold cut produced locally at the Alpe Piora.

The Lukmanier region is a hugely impor-tant area due to the presence of particu-lar biological, geomorphological and his-toric-cultural features. But there’s more: Lukmanier is also considered a veritable paradise for walkers, and it forms a starting point for trails amid thoroughly unspoiled nature. The Centro Pro Natura Lucomag-no, located in Acquacalda, is a unique place to study and contemplate the alpine landscape in which it lies. It offers food and accommodation, with options rang-ing from a standard room to a night in a cosy bungalow, and also boasts a classic campsite. On top of this, there are guid-ed excursions suitable for everyone, along with a rich programme of events.

La région du Lucomagno est un territoire d’une importance extraordinaire pour la présence de contenus biologiques, géomorphologiques et historique-cultu-rels particuliers, mais pas seulement. Le Lucomagno est considéré comme un vé-ritable paradis pour le randonneur, mais aussi comme le point de départ de pro-menades dans la nature la plus intacte. Le Centro Pro Natura Lucomagno, situé à Acquacalda, est un lieu unique dans son genre pour l’étude et la contempla-tion de la nature alpine environnante. The Greina Plateau lies at 2’300 metres above sea level between the high Blenio Valley and the Canton of Grisons, and stretches a distance of six kilometres. Here you can savour the tremendous wealth of this region’s nature thanks to excursions that take you on a journey of discovery through quarries, snowfields and mead-ows filled with delicate and colourful wild-flowers. While hiking here, you can experi-ence for yourself the alpine tundra and the magic of walking where streams flow un-disturbed, creating ponds and peat bogs.

Le haut plateau de la Greina se trouve à 2’300 mètres d’altitude entre la haute Vallée de Blenio et le Canton des Grisons et s’étend sur une longueur de six kilo-mètres. Il est possible de goûter l’énorme richesse de la nature de cette région grâce aux randonnées qui mènent à la décou-verte de rocailles, de névés et de prai-ries recouvertes par fleurs de montagne délicates et colorées. Au cours des pro-menades, il est possible de découvrir ce qu’est la toundra alpine et de tomber sous le charme d’un paysage où les torrents coulent tranquillement et créent des tour-bières et des étangs.

To discover the Pizzo di Claro region, you need to start from Lumino, where the ca-ble car will take you to Monti di Saurù in just 15 minutes. From there it is possible to reach the Brogoldone Hut, located on a panoramic terrace boasting magnificent views, which represents an important starting point for excursions and trips into the magnificent Pizzo di Claro region. It’s an alpine landscape that offers activities for all tastes, from mountain bike to nordic walking and it is also a popular destination for paragliding enthusiasts.

Pour découvrir la région du Pizzo di Claro, on part de Lumino, où, grâce au téléphé-rique, il est possible de rejoindre, en 15 minutes seulement, i Monti di Saurù. De là, il est possible de gagner la Capanna Brogoldone, située sur une terrasse pano-ramique d’une rare beauté, qui constitue un point de départ important pour des randonnées et des traversées dans la ré-gion merveilleuse du Pizzo di Claro. C’est un territoire alpin qui offre des activités pour tous les goûts, du VTT à la marche nordique, et qui est très prisé aussi des passionnés de parapente.

The Bedretto Valley is one of wild nature, made up of vivid colours and restful si-lence. There is no shortage of ways to enjoy this landscape, in summer or in winter. During the colder months it is the ideal place to go cross-country skiing or take a walk on snowshoes, while in sum-mer it’s a Mecca for hikers. All this can be enjoyed against a breathtaking al-pine backdrop. Also not to be missed is a visit to the crystal cave in Cioss Prato, the only one of its kind.

The Malvaglia Valley, which lies at the mouth of the Blenio Valley, welcomes tour-ists with an incredible variety of natural environments: from the chestnut forests at the lower levels to the ice of Adula, the ter-rain encompasses meadows, peat bogs, larch woods, fir trees and alpine pastures. The historic settlements also characterise the landscape, with the typical rural hous-es of times gone by. Thanks to the cable car, which is open all year round, you can leave from Malvaglia and in just eight min-utes you’ll have reached the sunny terrace of Dagro, located at 1’400 metres above sea level. From there, you can enjoy a magnificent view of the valley floor.

Beneath the mount of the Cima di Biasca, on the Alpe di Lago, rises the Ri della Fro-da, a small stream that descends from the high peaks and flows through a gully in the rock that the water has slowly carved out over the course of centuries. This is also precisely how the Santa Petronilla water-falls were formed, the highest in Ticino, whose foaming waters plunge between the rockfaces above Biasca only to then disappear again, as if by magic, behind the cable car station.

One of the most spectacular waterfalls in Ticino is that of Piumogna of Faido, which reaches a height of 43 metres and boasts a suspension bridge over the water where you can enjoy a magnificent natural spec-tacle from a safe vantage point. The wa-terfall is easy to reach on foot and there is a car park close by. This is an unmissa-ble attraction even for those nature-lovers spending just a few hours in Leventina. Next to the car park there is a playground with a picnic area, as well as the departure of the cableway that leads to Pianaselva. A small bridge leads to an educational path dedicated to the discovery of the sur-rounding flora. Nearby you will also find a sawmill and a classroom in the woods.

L’une des cascades les plus spectacu-laires du Tessin est la cascade de la Piu-mogna à Faido avec ses 43 mètres de hauteur, où un pont suspendu au-dessus du torrent permet de jouir en toute sécurité d’un spectacle naturel d’une rare beauté. La cascade est facilement accessible à pied et desservie par un parking situé tout près. Il s’agit d’une attraction iné-vitable pour les amoureux de la nature qui passent aussi quelques heures en Leventina. À côté du parking il y a une aire de jeux avec une zone de pique-nique, comme aussi le départ du téléphérique qui mène à Pianaselva. Un petit pont porte par contre à un sentier didactique dédié à la découverte de la flore environnante. Dans les environs ils se trouvent aussi la scierie patriciale et la salle du bois.

Over the course of centuries, the final wa-terfall along the course of the Nála has formed a large natural pool surrounded by rocks sculpted by the water and me-teorological events. In summer this beau-tiful pool turns into a lido – an ideal place to spend a fun-filled day, cool down and relax immersed in nature. In this enchant-ing area you will also find the atmospheric Grotto al Pozzón, a meeting place during hot summers where you can tuck into a plate of typical Ticino food while enjoying the views and the cooler temperatures.

Au cours des siècles, la dernière cascade du cours de la Nála a formé une piscine naturelle de grandes dimensions, entou-rée de rochers façonnés par les eaux et par les événements météorologiques. La magnifique piscine d’été se transforme en rivage, devenant ainsi un lieu idéal pour s’amuser, se distraire, se rafraîchir et se détendre au milieu de la nature. The “Pózz Bórgh” is a natural pool in Irag-na and is one of the best loved places in Ticino for cooling off during the summer. It is set against a splendid natural back-drop with a series of three waterfalls that end in the pool, and represents the perfect way for the whole family to relax and enjoy bathing and sunshine. The area is also a great spot for canyon-ing enthusiasts, who can practice this ex-treme sport in the ideal conditions of the Iragna stream canyons, with their daring descents and crystal-clear blue water.

Hiking trails The hiking trails are suitable for everyone and may therefore be undertaken without any special knowledge. They are mostly separated from the roads and are normally not asphalted. The more difficult sections are made secure with appropriate steps or fences. The hiking trails signs are yellow and are composed of arrows and indica-tors of direction and rhombuses.

Mountain trails The mountain trails are normally more dif-ficult and sometimes narrow and steep. Clothing and shoes suitable for the moun-tain are necessary but, above all, physical preparation and prudence are essential. Signalization of mountain trails is a yellow signpost with white-red-white tip. White-red-white painted stripes confirm the route.

Alpine routesAn alpine route leads through mountain-ous, alpine terrain, often with no actual trail, over snow fields and glaciers or rocky terrain with climbing sections. For experi-enced climbers the use of one’s hands and other aids such as rope and pick will be essential. The marking is a blue sign with a white-blue-white tip, also white-blue-white painted markings which confirm the route.

Chemins de randonnée pédestre Les chemins de randonnée pédestre sont praticables par tous et à tout âge. Ils sont en principe à l’écart des routes et ne sont généralement pas asphaltés. Les tron-çons difficiles ou glissants sont assurés (marches, barrières). La signalisation des chemins de randonnée pédestre est de couleur jaune et se compose d’indica-teurs, de flèches et de losanges.

Chemins de montagne Les chemins de montagne sont fréquem-ment étroits et escarpés. Ils exigent du touriste de plus grandes précautions: habileté en montagne, prudence accen-tuée, équipement résistant aux intem-péries, chaussures à semelles antidéra-pantes. La signalisation des chemins de montagne se distingue de celle des itiné-raires de randonnée pédestre par la pointe des indicateurs jaunes peinte en blanc-rouge-blanc. Des marques de peinture en blanc-rouge-blanc confirment le chemin à suivre.

Itinéraires alpins

L’itinéraire alpin conduit dans un terrain al-pestre, souvent sans chemin, et peut tra-verser pierrailles, névés, glaciers, voire des passages exigeant des connaissances de varappe. Pour un marcheur normale-ment exercé et connaissant la montagne, l’utilisation des mains ou d’auxiliaires, tels qu’une corde ou un piolet, devient indispensable. La signalisation se com-pose d’indicateurs bleus avec la pointe peinte en blanc-bleu-blanc ainsi que des marques de peinture en blanc-bleu-blanc qui confirment le chemin à suivre.

The hike starts from Rodi Fiesso. For those who don't want to burn up their energy too quickly, with an uphill walk of about 900 metres, the Tremorgio area can be reached by cableway starting from the valley floor. From Capanna Tremorgio, the trail continues towards the Campolongo plain, another idyllic place, rich in miner-als, with its unique vegetation and beauti-ful flowers that add a note of colour to the landscape. The panorama is dominated by the Pizzo Prévat mountain, a destina-tion for many mountain climbers, and all along the Campolongo geo-tourism trail signposts provide information on the ge-ology, mineralogy, flora and fauna of the territory.

L’excursion débute à Rodi Fiesso. Ceux qui souhaitent ménager leurs efforts et évi-ter une dénivelée de près de 900 mètres peuvent rejoindre la zone du Tremorgio au moyen du téléphérique qui monte depuis le fond de la vallée. Depuis la Capanna Tremorgio, le parcours se poursuit en di-rection de la plaine du Campolungo, lieu idyllique riche en minéraux présentant une végétation et une flore magnifiques et exceptionnelles apportant au paysage une touche de couleur. The “Via del Ferro” is a themed route that explores the ironworks and mines that have characterised the Upper Morobbia Valley since the early 18th century. It visits a num-ber of fascinating historic sites, including the spectacular ruins of the tilt hammer and furnace in Carena, mines shrouded in mys-tery and the reconstruction of a charcoal pile. The path winds its way through the evocative Alpine environment of the Alpe Giumello, crossing through a rare dwarf mountain pine wood to the Giggio forest.

La “Via del Ferro” est un itinéraire théma-tique à la découverte des sites sidérur-giques et miniers qui depuis le début du XVIIIe siècle caractérisaient le territoire de la haute Val Morobbia. Le Chemin per-met de découvrir des témoignages émo-tionnants de cette époque, comme les ruines spectaculaires du Maglio e Forno di Carena (marteaux-pilons et fourneau), les mystérieuses mines et la charbonnière dé-monstrative. The Greina is defined as the tundra of Ticino. This is a unique landscape, char-acterised by an extraordinary variety of bi-otopes. It’s a veritable natural mosaic, so those who love alpine scenery and wide open spaces can’t help but be moved. The Greina Plateau lies 2’300 metres above sea level between the Upper Blenio Valley and the Canton of Grisons, and is criss-crossed by historic footpaths, as it was a transport route and provided graz-ing even in Roman times and during the Middle Ages. During the short summer season, the pla-teau in full bloom is a spectacular sight, and it is not unusual to encounter mar-mots and ibex. Greina also boasts a nat-ural stone arch, which can be reached via a signposted diversion from the main trail.

La Greina est définie comme la toundra tessinoise. Il s’agit d’un paysage unique, caractérisé par une variété extraordinaire de biotopes. Une véritable mosaïque na-turelle qui ne peut laisser indifférents ceux qui aiment les décors alpins et les espaces ouverts. Le haut plateau de la Greina se trouve à 2’300 mètres d’altitude entre la haute Vallée de Blenio et le canton des Gri-sons et est traversé par des chemins his-toriques, étant donné que déjà à l’époque romaine et au Moyen-Âge c’était une voie de passage et une aire de pâturage. Pendant la courte saison d’été, le haut plateau offre des floraisons splendides et il n’est pas inhabituel de rencontrer des marmottes et des bouquetins. La Greina a une arche naturelle en pierre que l’on peut rejoindre en faisant une déviation, signalée, par le chemin principal.

The route departs from Olivone post office and follows the old mule track that linked Campo Blenio with Olivone. You then reach the village of Campo Ble-nio which, during the winter, transforms into a ski resort ideal for families. Then fol-lows a stretch across the plain to reach the village of Aquilesco. This route is perfect for prompting reflection on what the Sosto gorge represented in the days when it was the sole connection between Olivone and the area above Sosto. Walkers can choose to return to Olivone by bus or on foot via the same trail.

Le parcours part d’Olivone-Posta et monte par l’ancien chemin muletier qui reliait Campo Blenio à Olivone. On rejoint ensuite le village de Campo Ble-nio, qui, en hiver, se transforme en station de ski idéale pour les familles, et on tra-verse toute la plaine jusqu’à rejoindre le hameau d’Aquilesco. C’est un parcours idéal pour stimuler une réflexion sur ce que la gorge du Sosto représentait à l’époque où celle-ci était l’unique liaison entre Oli-vone et le haut du Sosto. The Blenio Valley is known as “the valley of the sun”, and it’s from this that a mag-nificent trek at altitude gets its name. This is a multi-day trek that takes in enchanting valleys, mountain huts and lakes. The route begins at the foot of some of Ticino’s highest mountains and gla-ciers, which are perfectly served by well-equipped alpine huts that are manned throughout the summer season. The stag-es are never too long and there is always the possibility of joining or leaving the trek-king route. Furthermore, part of this itiner-ary also passes along the ibex trail.

La Vallée de Blenio est définie comme la “Vallée du soleil”. C’est précisément de là que cette superbe traversée en altitude prend son nom: un trekking de plusieurs jours qui permet de visiter des charmantes vallées, des cabanes et des petits lacs. Le parcours se bifurque au pied des cimes et des glaciers parmi les plus élevés du Tessin, parfaitement desservi par des ca-banes alpines bien équipées et gardées pendant la période estivale. Les étapes ne sont jamais très longues et il y a toujours la possibilité d’entrer dans le parcours du trekking ou d’en sortir. En outre, une partie de cet itinéraire passe aussi par le chemin des bouquetins.

The “Strada degli Alpi” road in the Bedret-to Valley is notable for its wild nature with its rich colours and deep silences. The starting point is at Pesciüm, which can easily be reached by cable car from Airolo. From there you continue towards Ronco, passing numerous mountain farms, in-cluding the Alpe Cristallina where visitors can tour the cellars and purchase fresh cheese directly from the dairyman. From here, you can take in a majestic view of Pizzo Rotondo and Pizzo Lucendro. The trail continues towards Stabiello Grande and then starts to descend amid pastures to ultimately end at Alpe di Valleggia, from where you return to Ronco.

La “Strada degli Alpi” dans la Val Bedretto est caractérisée par une nature sauvage, riche en couleurs et en silences. Le départ se fait depuis Pesciüm, aisément accessible en téléphérique depuis Airolo. On continue ensuite en direction de Ron-co, en traversant de nombreux alpages dont l’Alpage Cristallina, qui permet de vi-siter les caves et d’acheter le fromage frais directement à l’alpage. De là, on peut jouir d’une vue majestueuse sur le Pizzo Ro-tondo et sur le Pizzo Lucendro. On conti-nue en direction de Stabiello Grande pour amorcer ensuite la descente au milieu des pâturages et finir à l’Alpe Valleggia pour revenir à Ronco.

From the municipality of Lumino, located at the mouth of the Mesolcina Valley, the Pizzo di Claro cable car carries visitors up the 1’300 metres in altitude to the Monti di Saurù in less than 15 minutes. The trail winds along comfortably, starting from the cable car station and reaching the Monti di Parusciana to ultimately end in the forest above the Monti di Saurù. The route is equipped with ten information boards depicting the sun, the eight planets of the solar system and one board in place of Pluto to represent the five dwarf plan-ets. Each board outlines the most impor-tant points of data on the relevant celestial bodies, along with a brief description.

Depuis le village de Luimino, située à l’en-trée de la val Mesolcina, le téléphérique Pizzo di Claro monte, en moins de 15 minutes, pour rejoindre les 1’300 mètres d’altitude des Monti di Saurù. Le parcours serpente le long d’un chemin pratique, part de l’arrêt du téléphérique et arrive jusqu’aux Monti di Parusciana pour se ter-miner ensuite dans le bois au-dessus des Monti di Saurù. Le parcours est accompagné de dix pan-neaux didactiques figurant le soleil et les huit planètes du système solaire et d’une plaque, située à l’endroit de Pluton, re-présentant les cinq planètes naines. The Tibetan Bridge, standing 270 metres high, is one of the longest in all of Swit-zerland. The excursion departs from the atmospheric village of Curzútt, which is easily reached via the Mornera cable car. From this point you arrive at St. Barnard and continue to then reach the Tibetan Bridge after 45 minutes of walking. Having crossed the bridge, you will reach the Or-atorio di San Defendente chapel. You can then choose whether to continue upwards to reach the Orino, Mognone or Albagno pastures, or to follow the “Via delle Vigne” for a food-and-wine-themed trail that en-ables you to sample local produce and prized wines directly from the producers.

Le Pont Tibétain, avec ses 270 mètres, est l’un des plus longs de toute la Suisse. La randonnée part du hameau caracté-ristique de Curzútt, aisément accessible grâce au téléphérique Mornera. On ar-rive alors à Saint Bernard et on continue pour arriver ensuite, après 45 minutes de marche, au Pont Tibétain. Après avoir traversé le pont, on arrive à l’Oratoire de San Defendente. On peut en suite choisir de repartir vers le haut, en rejoignant les alpages d’Orino, de Mognone ou d’Alba-gno, ou de suivre la Via delle Vigne pour une promenade œnogastronomique qui permet de se restaurer en offrant la possi-bilité de goûter des produits locaux et des vins fins directement chez les producteurs.

The Lake Ritom dam is the starting point for an educational trail that allows visitors to admire the unspoiled nature, the fau-na and the landscape that characterise this area.Skirting the lake shore on the forest side, the trail reaches Cadagno, where you can find a small lake of the same name, the Alpe Piora pastureland and the Centro di Biologia Alpina. The Val Piora area boasts a microclimate that offers broad biodiversity, so this route is set up as an ecological ex-cursion with a series of boards offering bi-ological and cultural information and high-lighting the particular features of the area.

The Bellinzonese and Upper Ticino region is the ideal destination for fans of cycling, thanks to its year-round mild tempera-tures and abundant nature that inspires even the laziest visitor to get active. There is no shortage of routes to put you to the test and numerous bike-friendly establish-ments can be found along the way, satis-fying the demands of even the most expert cyclists. A number of routes are included in the SwitzerlandMobility platform: Bovarina Bike, Valle di Blenio Bike, Valle Malvaglia Bike, Alpi Bedretto Bike, Gottardo Bike, Airolo Bike and others are set to follow over the next few years. Depending on the chosen itinerary, you can find countless points of historic and cultural interest, lush meadows and winding paths, as well as forests, alpine landscapes and breath-taking panoramas. In the Bellinzonese and Upper Ticino there are also two bike shar-ing networks: one of e-MTB that extends from the Blenio Valley to Biasca and an e-bike network for the Bellinzonese.

Indeed, Cresciano, Chironico and the St. Gotthard Pass are popular destinations that draw thousands of bouldering lovers from all over Europe. As an alternative, Giubiasco boasts the indoor Alpha Boulder gym and in Ambrì there is the Audan gym, ideal for practising the sport indoor.

Our region boasts a broad choice of climbing locations on granite and gneiss, be they cliff faces or multi-stage climbs. In fact there are a large number of well-equipped rock faces with plenty of fissures just waiting to be climbed. In the Bedretto Valley and Leventina, there are various climbing itineraries. A moun-tain that is particularly well known among climbers is Pizzo Prévat in the Leventina Valley. Nevertheless, the most captivating climb for many climbers remains the Luz-zone dam, with the world’s longest artifi-cial climbing route: 165 metres high, it will test you to your limits.Unfavourable weather won’t stop the fun, as there is a wide choice of indoor clim-bing walls like at the Audan gym in Ambrì or at the Polisport in Olivone.

Notre région dispose d’un vaste choix de sites pour l’escalade sur granit et gneiss tant en falaise qu’en longues voies. En ef-fet, les parois équipées d’un grand nombre de fissures donnant envie de grimper sont vraiment nombreuses. Dans la Val Bedretto et dans la Val Leven-tina, il y a de nombreux itinéraires d’es-calade. Une montagne connue parmi les grimpeurs est précisément le Pizzo Prévat dans la Val Leventina. Mais le défi le plus fascinant pour de nombreux grimpeurs reste le barrage du Luzzone dans la Vallée de Blenio, avec la voie d’escalade artifi-cielle la plus longue du monde: 165 mètres de hauteur pour tester ses propres limites.Si la météo est défavorable, il n’y a aucun problème, car à l’offre déjà riche viennent s’ajouter les escalades en intérieur dans la halle d’escalade Audan à Ambrì et au Centro Polisport à Olivone.

The Upper Ticino is rich in magnificent lakes of intense colour, which immerse hikers in a mountain idyll. Various small alpine lakes can be reached on foot along trails that are well signposted. Almost all of them are open to anglers with an appropriate li-cence, as applies to those fishing along the River Ticino. Sport fishing is also possible.

There is a completely different way to taste the best Switzerland has to offer: the Grand Tour of Switzerland, a road trip cov-ering 1’600 kilometres to discover cultural and scenic gems and visit 12 UNESCO World Heritage sites. The route is designed especially for motorists and motorcyclists and aims to avoid motorways in order to fully enjoy the surrounding scenery.The tour also crosses the region of Bell-inzonese and Upper Ticino, starting with the queen of the alpine routes, the Tremo-la road, up the Bellinzona Castles, across the Leventina and along the River Ticino. Along the route you can stop to take pho-tos at the marked photo spots and take a break to taste the local and regional prod-ucts you’ll find in the “Snack Box” provid-ed by selected organisations and distrib-uted along the route.

Rabadan is the quintessential carnival in Ticino and, together with the Basel and Lucerne carnivals, is one of the more im-portant ones held in Switzerland. It takes place in the historical centre of Bellinzona, where a real spectacle comes to life out in the open air, with music, people in cos-tumes and lots of fun. The days are char-acterised by the numerous masked pa-rades that invade the city. Each evening, the city comes alive in the marquees in the town’s historical centre where you can dance, drink and eat until dawn.The Ambrosian Carnival also takes place in various locations throughout the re-gion, which helps to extend the period of festivities.

It’s a market that offers its visitors the very best: local artisan products, super-fresh fruit and vegetables, cheeses from the valleys, speciality meats, flowers and bread. Every year towards the end of September the region hosts its own Agriculture Day, which includes a cheese show where visi-tors can taste and buy the best dairy pro-duce from the surrounding mountains. The event is characterised by the presence of cattle, which are herded the short distance here accompanied by the sounds of the Filarmonica Alta Leventina and by vintage tractors. Visitors can enjoy a display of various animal species as they meander through the market stalls.

Chaque année, vers la fin du mois de septembre, a lieu la journée agricole et l’exposition des fromages de la Leventi-na, qui permet de déguster et d’acheter le meilleur de la production fromagère des alpages de la région. There is no shortage of sporting events for visitors to watch or participate in: from winter events like the international ski-ing competitions and championships, the ice hockey championships and the figure-skat-ing shows, to football, basketball and beach volleyball tournaments and tennis, judo and cycling competitions. Also very popular are the running events such as the Giro Media Blenio, an annual race with an international reach, and the Faido Running Night. Then of course there are mountain races such as the Lodrino-Lavertezzo Skyrace, the new Greina Trail and the popular Claro-Pizzo.

The Granfondo San Gottardo is an ama-teur cycling competition open to all. The aim is to cross three passes in the heart of the Swiss Alps: St. Gotthard, Furka and Novena. There are three different circuits, which include the legendary climb up of the Tremola road.

The three famous castles of Bellinzona were declared a Unesco World Herit-age Site in 2000. Visiting Castelgrande, Montebello and Sasso Corbaro, the city’s main attractions, is like diving into the past, the Middle Ages, when they were used to control access to the alpine valleys. Walk-ing the surrounding walls, it’s not difficult to imagine the deeds of great knights and how life used to be. The castles also host various exhibitions and themed displays that are well worth a visit.

Every year in June and July, festivals take place that attract fans of military history from all over Switzerland. They are the Pa-tronali della Madonna del Rosario of Aqui-la (first Sunday of July), the Madonna del Carmelo of Ponto Valentino (third Sunday of July) and San Giovanni Battista a Le-ontica (usually the third Sunday of June). These evocative parades of the Napoleonic militia take place in the Blenio Valley. The three festivals find their origin in the resolution expressed by the residents of three villages enlisted in the “Swiss Divi-sion” that if they returned alive from the Russian Campaign during the retreat of the French Army at the Battle of Berezina, they would parade annually to give thanks to the Patron Saint. This tradition has existed since 1812.

Chaque année, en juin et juillet, les fêtes patronales de la Madonna del Rosario à Aquila (dimanche de la première semaine de juillet), de la Madonna del Carmelo à Ponto Valentino (dimanche de la troisième semaine de juillet) et de San Giovanni Battista à Leontica (généralement la troi-sième semaine de juin) attirent des pas-sionnés d’histoire militaire en provenance de toute la Suisse. Le rendez-vous est dans la Vallée de Blenio, où se déroulent les défilés suggestifs des milices napoléo-niennes. Les trois anniversaires de Blenio dérivent du vote exprimé par les habitants de ces trois villages de la vallée enrôlés dans la “Division Suisse”: ils auraient défilé chaque année pour remercier le Saint Patron pour commémorer leur retour en vie de la cam-pagne de Russie lors de la retraite de la Grande Armée sur le champ de bataille de Bérézina. Cette tradition se perpétue depuis 1812.

The Hungerforts are a precious and in-teresting witness to 19th century Ticino that deserve to be discovered so people can enjoy an exciting leap into history. The educational trail, lasting two hours, is a reminder for people of a difficult and turbulent period in Ticino’s history – one with which most people are un-familiar. Visitors are accompanied by an atmosphere suspended between the past and present as they go on a relax-ing walk surrounded by nature, among picturesque vineyards, lush forests, and a breathtaking view over the Magadino Plain.

At the mouth of the Blenio Valley on a rocky outcrop loom the evocative ruins of Serravalle Castle. This late-medieval castle, the origins of which are said to date back to the era of the Battle of Legnano in 1176, was destroyed in that very battle but subse-quently reconstructed by the Orelli fam-ily from Locarno, who occupied it until the era of the Viscounts of Milan (1350 onwards). The building was then passed to the Pepoli family from Bologna. It was destroyed once again in 1402, and it is from this period that the current ruins date.

À l’entrée de la Vallée de Blenio, sur un éperon rocheux, se dressent les ruines évocatrices du Château de Serravalle. Ce château du bas Moyen-Âge, dont l’origine remonterait à l’époque de la ba-taille de Legnano qui eut lieu en 1176, fut détruit à cette occasion et fut reconstruit par la suite par les Orelli de Locarno, qui l’occupèrent jusqu’à l’époque des Visconti de Milano (1350 environ). Giornico is a small, serene village located at the end of the Leventina Valley. It’s a gem that captivates visitors with its cultural heritage, the best known element of which is undoubtedly the Church of San Nicola, a masterpiece of the Romanesque. Also of interest are the other six churches that can be found in the area, as well as the historic houses, such as the one known as “Degli Stanga” with its frescoes, currently the base for the Leventina Ethnographic Museum. Furthermore, it is also possible to visit the “Congiunta”, a modern con-struction built to house contemporary sculptures.

L’édifice le plus connu est sans aucun doute l’église de San Nicola, un chef d’œuvre du style roman. FOR-TI is a project comprising various trails through the Bellinzonese and Upper Ticino region that allow visitors to discover the most important points of military inter-est and the magnificent landscapes that surround them. It’s important to know that our region co-vers a vast area spreading from the south-ern slope of Monte Ceneri and Lake Mag-giore to the alpine massif of St. Gotthard. The numerous valleys lead to equally as many alpine passes, which served histori-cally as transport routes for people and goods. It is from this that our region gained its strategic importance, whereby the most important defensive system comprised the artillery forts of Airolo and St. Gotthard.

The Villa dei Cedri Museum is housed in a building with the character of a suburban villa, the result of its renovation in Palladian style that took place around 1920, from its original neoclassical construction dating back to 1860. The Villa owes its name to the majestic conifers that once shaded the entrance gate and which today grow in the historic park where it is located.The museum’s exhibition includes art from the 19th century to the present day, with particular attention given to works on paper and the creative process, building bridges between the artists and the mu-seum’s visitors.

Le musée de la Villa dei Cedri se situe dans un bâtiment ayant l’aspect d’une villa de banlieue, le fruit du remaniement de style palladien, vers 1920, de la construction néoclassique d’origine datant de 1860. The Teatro Sociale of Bellinzona was con-structed in 1846 according to plans by the architect Giacomo Moraglia from Milan, who took inspiration from the theatre of La Scala of Milan. The building forms part of the alpine section of the Europe-an Route of Historic Theatres as the sole example of a nineteenth-century theatre still in operation in Switzerland.

The Upper Ticino has the highest con-centration of alpine pasture in the whole canton.In fact, there are around forty farms lo-cated between the valleys of Leventina, Bedretto and Blenio. Located near to the walking trails, these pastures enable hik-ers to see animals grazing, admire pic-ture-postcard landscapes and chat with local shepherds and dairymen. They also have the chance to purchase local food products directly from the producers, with top-quality cheeses on offer bearing the prestigious DOP (protected designation of origin) label.

The grottos are typical hostelries of Ticino, rustic buildings immersed in the shade of verdant nature. Notable for their cool-er temperatures that remain constant throughout the year, they were the “fridg-es” of days gone by. Now they serve as restaurants with tables and benches made of granite, where guests can enjoy typical products and dishes, such as cold meats, minestrone, risotto, polenta with braised beef, cheeses and torta di pane cake. To complete the meal, Merlot and lem-onade produced in the region are served in the traditional “boccalino”, a jug made of ceramic.
