FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK… Dear Parishioners and Friends of St. Francis de Sales Parish, Fall is a busy and wonderful time of year! Ours is a vibrant and active parish, and there are so many activities that are happening, so I would just like to point out a few of them. The school year, of course, is going full speed ahead at St. Francis de Sales Parish School. Mr. Eric Gallagher and the teachers and staff are hard at work providing a quality education for our children in an environment of faith. The Religious Education Programs have all begun – grade school, Junior High, High School and Confirmation classes. If you haven’t yet signed up your children, be sure to contact Katie Ploch, our Director of Religious Education, or call the parish office. This year, we are privileged to have the presence of Deacon John Martin. Deacon John is a transitional deacon studying for the priesthood at Sacred Heart Seminary and School of Theology, Hales Corners, Wisconsin for the Diocese of Fort Worth, Texas. Deacon John will be with us at least two weekends a month to exercise the ministry of deacon at Mass, and to preach homilies. Welcome Deacon John! Our seminarian intern, John Baumgardner is back in Rome to continue his studies. He will be ordained a transitional deacon in Rome on Sept. 29, 2016 and will be ordained to the priesthood at St. John the Evangelist Cathedral Milwaukee on July 22, 2017. Please keep him in prayer. Today is our Fall Festival! Come, one and all, to enjoy food, fun and fellowship! I hope to see you there! Our Volunteer Appreciation Boat Cruise is Sunday is Sunday, Oct. 2. All aboard! See the bulletin or our parish website for details. God continues to bless us in so many ways. I look forward to a Fall filled with faith, fellowship, and fun! God’s Blessings, Fr. WE DID IT! As you know, we have been conducting a capital campaign here at St. Francis de Sales called “Project 2017, Lighting the Way to the Future”. Our original goal of $1,000,000 was quickly surpassed, and our “miracle goal” of $1,500,000 was reached shortly thereafter. About 7 weeks ago I offered you a new challenge with a new goal. This would result in extra dollars that will be above and beyond the costs of our renovation. We would then have a fund for the future capital needs of our church and school. I’m very proud to announce that this week we actually surpassed $2,000,000! I am truly amazed and humbled by your generosity and spirit of sacrifice. This accomplishment will allow us to not only address all of the current renovation needs on our list, but also to strategically plan for future projects. By endowing our beautiful church, we will be leaving our legacy for future generations for many more years to come. THANK YOU for your help in “Lighting the Way to the Future”. Sincerely, Fr. Jim

FAITH WITH A FACE Emily has a birthday coming up. It’s a big one…she’ll be 100 years old! An artist all of her life, Emily has donated two paintings that she created to our Parish Festival Silent Auction happening this weekend. She has dabbled in acrylics as well as water color and has been a member of the Geneva Lake Art Association. A parishioner at St. Francis de Sales for 15 years, she loves the music at our church…. “It’s so alive!” Emily drives her own car and loves to play bridge and pinochle twice a week. She stills bowls a game of 140 (although she admits to having to use a lighter ball than she used to!). Every day she rides her stationary bike for 20 minutes. “I might be having a problem with my knee, but after I ride my bike it actually feels better!”

Her career included being a secretary and then later a real estate agent at Keefe for 25 years (she retired when she was 75). She is very grateful for her sons and daughter (and their spouses) who help her out. What’s her secret? “Keep interested in your surroundings and other people. Think about others---not just yourself---and be a friend. God has blessed me!” Thank you, Emily for your generosity and your spunk! You are an inspiration! You can see Emily’s works of art (and many other wonderful

auction items) this weekend at the Parish Festival along with great food, music, raffles, games and more. We hope to see you there! --Story contributor: Nancy Mancuso

SEPTEMBER 2016 SYNOD IMPLEMENTATION NEWSLETTER In Archbishop Listecki’s column, “Help Wanted: Missionaries for a Church on the move,” he expresses appreciation and need for our ordained and lay ministers in adapting to the changing needs of leadership in today’s Church. “A Welcome Straight from the Heart” highlights the success of St. Alphonsus’ “Bring a Friend to Mass” campaign – an effective formula for any parish. And Susan McNeil, director of the Nazareth Project for Marriage and Family Formation, shares her own personal transformation in “From Maintenance to Mission.” Read all three articles by picking up a copy of the newsletter at our parish or by visiting tinyurl.com/grfjfrk.

LAKE GENEVA CLOTHES CLOSET Gently used clothing for children, teens, women and men is available free at the Clothes Closet at the Methodist Church in Lake Geneva. Hours are 9 to 11 a.m. on Tuesdays and Saturdays. All are welcome. No proof of need is necessary. No limit on number of items taken or number of visits. Donations of gently used clothing and bedding are gratefully accepted. Tax receipt available.

PROJECT 2017 CONSTRUCTION UPDATE We are moving forward with decisions on contractors, materials, and colors in preparation for the construction which will start right after Christmas! This week you will notice some scaffolding and workers in a small section toward the back of the church. These are artists from Conrad Schmitt Studios (our designer of the painting and stencils) creating a sample. It’s important to see how the light in the church affects the colors and appearance of the painting. This shouldn't interfere with our Sunday Mass schedule (a few pews might be blocked off) but you will be able to see a sneak peek of the design possibilities for our church restoration project!

OCTOBER IS RIGHT TO LIFE MONTH Surveys show that more than two-thirds of Americans are deeply uncomfortable with the legacy of Roe vs. Wade. By a margin of more than three to one, people believe that abortion should be legal in only a few circumstances. There is a pro-life moral consensus in America. The Knights of Columbus’ consistent message is on the importance and dignity of all human life. Your Knights are collecting donations after all Masses on Oct. 1 and 2, to provide pregnancy centers across Wisconsin and Illinois with state-of-the-art ultrasound machines, which cost around $25,000. Pregnant women considering an abortion will be able to see a real life picture of their baby developing within them. The $6 million collected by the Knights in the last three years has resulted in the purchase of 250 ultrasound machines in 45 states Thank you for your consideration and prayers.
