Foxes and mange in the community

What is mange?

Mange is a skin disease caused by infection with the Sarcoptes scabei mite. The mites are microscopic and can't be seen by the naked eye. Female mites burrow under the skin and lay eggs. This is normal in foxes, and mange can also occur in dogs, but without treatment, this disease can eventually kill the fox.

Are mangy foxes dangerous? Mangy foxes may come close to human houses, and may act unafraid of humans, but they do not usually act aggressively. Foxes could spread mange to domestic dogs through direct contact, sleeping in dog houses etc. Mange in dogs can be easily treated by a veterinarian. Mange mites cannot infect human skin, but direct contact with a mangy fox may result in skin irritation or a rash.

What should I do if a mangy fox is hanging around near my house? If you see a fox that seems sick or may be acting strangely, please do not go near it! Wild animals are unpredictable, and it is never safe to approach an animal that is sick or injured.
