New Look

The Landscape Contractors association renamed in 2011 & has since been known as Landscape NSW & ACT. (LNA). As part of the LNA brand evolution we are excited to reveal a new Logo that has been developed & will now be implemented across the website and other key marketing material. The logo, we trust you will agree, reflects & commands the authority of our landscaping peak body in both of these states.

Association Rationale: The brand is to demonstrate authority and industry leader presence. The sculpted LNA letters are contoured to represent the raw landscape, capturing a balanced combination of geometric lines and subtle flowing curves, demonstrating the naturally existing with the man-made inspired. The rich brown colour used is representative of the fertile soil that gives forth the lush greens of new growth. The introduction of the word ‘association’ is to further strengthen the brand by clearly identifying its state-wide authority and expertise.

We are confident that when the LNA brand is embraced by its members and included on vehicles & machinery, as well as other marketing collateral that it will most certainly assist in raising the profile of the association of landscape professionals to the consumer and collectively help to grow the entire industry as we move into another exciting chapter of our Association.

Many thanks to 4 Community for their assistance with the development of the the new LNA logo.

Landscape Modern Award Wage Rate update

Kudos to Past LNA President – Robert Stanton

The Australian Federation of Employers and Industries have supplied an update for the Landscaping Industry Modern Award Wage rates which includes both the Building and Construction General On-Site Award 2010 and the Gardening and Landscaping Services Award 2010. LNA Members can login into the Members Resources on the website to download these documents.

The LNA can completely understand and appreciate the confusion surrounding the contingencies and award rates for apprentices, however it is not as simple as publishing the binding rates because this may mislead some employers.

The wage rates that are published in the wage rate schedule are accurate according to current Modern Award published wage rates. However the transitional provisions in schedule A of the Modern Award apply to apprentice wage rates also. This means that the transitional binding minimum rate of pay for an apprentice will depend on their pre modern award entitlements which depends on the industrial instrument that the employer was bound by before 2010.

We are currently in stage three of the transitional process in which employers fade out the difference between the old instruments and the modern award on 1 July 2014. We will have completed this transitional phase and all apprentices under this award will be paid a percentage of the Modern Award published rate. This will simplify the matter for both employers and employees.

The LNA look forward to continuing to supply these updates to its members.

Robert was appointed President of Landscape NSW & ACT Ltd (LNA) in 2010 when the not for profit industry Association required serious intervention and some clever foresight. Roberts motivation to intervene on a voluntary and financial basis, stemmed from his love of landscaping together with his desire to pay forward to an industry that has treated him well, over a career that has spanned more than 40 years. No doubting, far from conventional with his grass roots hands on approach, Robert pushed the boundaries, never one to back away from a challenge, he was instrumental in setting the Association on its current winning course.

2010 to current

The landscaping industries peak body in NSW & ACT (LNA) has seen a number of significant changes under Roberts leadership which include but are not limited to:

· The LCA office premises relocation from Bankstown to Parramatta CBD

· The name change of the Landscape Contractors Association of NSW & ACT to Landscape NSW & ACT

· A key Marketing and Public Relations individual was hired to oversee the introduction of an entirely new “Brand” together with the introduction of a logo and website

· Roberts HR and Management skills were highlighted with his innate ability to select the current LNA Team including: Board of Directors, Committee Members, an Executive Officer and staff who were out sourced from a diverse group of sectors and are now a collaboration of individuals with a mixture of exceptional skillsets working together toward a common goal.

· Continue Professional Development (CPD) Scheme – Together with the LNA Licensing and Accreditation Committee, Robert was instrumental in the development of the LNA Continued Professional Development (CPD) scheme for the landscaping industry. Through the LNA Continue Development Program the “Registered Landscape Professionals” competencies will being continuously validated by their participation in the on-going professional development scheme. The scheme will receive endorsement from NSW Department of Fair trading and should be rolled out to renewing LNA members in January 2013

· Robert recognised the importance of introducing a Mentoring Program for landscape contractors by tapping into the extensive depth of knowledge within the Association. To support and encourage contractors to manage their own learning in order that they may maximise their potential, develop their skills, improve their performance, build relationships and become the professional they want to be

· Membership and Sponsorship programs with measurable value and key benefits which have driven Membership growth. Seen the retention and rapid build in membership growth, with increases experienced in as much as 20% in 2011

· Reviewed, vetted and contributed to a complete revamp and update of the LNA Edition 15 of the Landscape Construction Rates Book

SMH Article - Green Wall Possible Fire HazardA SYDNEY landscape architect is pushing for green walls to be regulated under building and fire safety codes after he recently saw one go up in flames at a local bar.

David Vago was at Arcadia Liquors in Redfern last month when a green wall, or vertical garden, caught alight in a semi-enclosed beer garden.

‘’I reckon it went up within five or six seconds,’’ he said. ‘’It jumped so quickly.’’

The fireman who responded to the incident said it was caused by a burning candle.

‘’A patron used a candle to light his cigarette and one of the ferns caught alight and it just raced up the wall,’’ a Redfern station officer, Matthew Murray, said.

Green walls are the latest trend in urban design and architecture, used to enliven blank facades and reduce the heat island effect in urban areas. The term refers to a wall that is partially or completely covered with vegetation.

The new One Central Park complex being constructed at Broadway will feature the world’s tallest green wall - 16 storeys in parts - using 100,000 plants.

Mr Vago, director of the Habitation firm, doubts green walls pose a risk if properly designed and maintained.

‘’But without regular maintenance, that costs a fortune, they’re a fire hazard,’’ he said.

‘’I can’t force people to look after their landscapes but unfortunately when you put a landscape on a building you’ve got other issues.’’

Industry stakeholders say, if done professionally, it is almost impossible for a green wall to catch alight.

The Greenwall Company director, Mark Paul, has fitted about 12 green walls in smoking areas at pubs and is confident his installations present no fire hazard.

‘’As long as there is healthy plant growth, a working irrigation system and an adequate maintenance regime, they are in fact the reverse, fire dampening,’’ he said.

It is ad hoc or imitation fixtures that are of concern.

‘’There are a lot of silk and plastic replicas of green walls around, and these are highly flammable, even more so with time,’’ Mr Paul said.

Bob Wong, who was at Arcadia Liquors the day of the fire, says the green wall was partially synthetic.

‘’We were all fascinated and went to touch it and it was plastic,’’ he said.

‘’I think the plants on the outside were real and maybe the ferns were real but the moss and some of the leaves were definitely plastic.’’

Fireman Murray did not see any irrigation system at the bar and believes the plants were hand-watered.

Mr Vago is concerned green walls are not, at present, subject to any legislation or building standards.

‘’Anyone can throw a green wall up without knowing what they’re doing,’’ he said.

He also fears they may not be maintained properly in big residential apartment blocks due to large strata costs.

A senior fire safety engineer at Defire Chris Jamieson said green walls are not directly addressed in the Building Code of Australia. But, he said, it is obvious they would present a risk if not managed properly.

‘’Dead or dry vegetation up the side of a building could certainly present a significant risk of fire spread,’’ he said.

The City of Sydney released a Green Roofs and Walls Strategy in June, including a cost-benefit study which it said will specifically investigate risks.

‘’The city will also set up a technical advisory panel to help develop its policy,’’ a spokesperson said. ‘’Potential fire hazards of green roofs and walls, which have been either incorrectly installed or badly maintained, will specifically be addressed by the expert panel.’’

Changes to Tree Management Controls within the City of Ryde Daily Telegraph “HOME” lift

out MagazineOn 21 August 2012, the Council of the City of Ryde adopted three urban forest documents to guide the preservation and management of trees within the City.

These documents are:

• UrbanForestPolicy

• Part9.6TreePreservationoftheDevelopmentControlPlan(DCP) 2010

• TechnicalManual.

The documents will come into effect on Monday 1 October 2012.

Tree Permits

From Monday 1 October, residents will need to apply for a Tree Permit to:

• pruneatree

• removeatree

• alterthesoillevelsclosetoatree.

In general, a tree is covered by DCP 2010 Part 9.6 Tree Preservation if it is 5 metres tall or has a stem circumference of 450mm at 1.4 metres from ground level.

Some tree species and tree works will be exempt. If these exemptions apply then a resident may prune, remove or change the soil levels around a tree without making any kind of application. The current Notice of Intent process will no longer apply.

The requirement to obtain a Tree Permit before altering soil levels is new. Residents will be expected to calculate the tree protection zone area around their trees. Any amendment to levels within that zone will require a permit.

Development Application Approval

If a resident lives in a heritage conservation area or their property is listed as a heritage item they will need to obtain Development Application approval before starting any tree works.

A copy of the new documentation will be available at www.ryde.nsw.gov.au/trees from mid September.

LNA Members Continue to send your “Before and After” stories

The LNA has recently had meetings with the Daily Telegraph

and specifically the ‘’Home’’ liftout magazine regarding forming

an ongoing media relationship with the LNA and it’s members.

This was a very promising meeting and the editor and writers

have asked us to go to you our members, to see if you have any

gardens that they would be interested in featuring.

It is the format of the magazine that the focus is on residential

gardens only at this point. They have particular interest in great

‘’before and after’’ stories. It is not about just the big and

glamorous though, if you read this magazine you would know

that they feature full gardens to courtyards, even what to do with

awkward side passages or shaded gardens or short stories like

how to heat a garden. Affiliate Supplier Members take note and

submit material on topics such as outdoor lighting, use of recycled

materials, paving, shade solutions etc.

So don’t just think about big and glossy, journalists are always

looking for an interesting angle. They like to be provided with

professional shots for the after shots at least but they are willing

to send their own photographer. You also have to bear in mind

that traditionally the designer of the garden receives more credit

than the contractor who installs the garden. If you designed the

solution then there will be no problem, if you did not then think

about how the article may be skewed in your favour or combined

acknowledgement with the designer.

We urge you to put your thinking caps on, if you think you have

a beautiful garden or an interesting angle no matter how large or

small then send your pictures to us, not too many pics, a couple

before if you have them and maximum of 6 of the completed, low

resolution to start with. The LNA Members who entered the 2012

Landscape Excellence Awards will be given priority and material

will be forwarded to the Daily Telegraph for consideration.
