The Universidade Federal do Amazonas (Ufam) it’s a public institution of higher learning that offers, through teaching, research and extension, graduation and post-graduation courses.

To produce and disseminate knowledge, with academic excellence, in the various areas of knowledge through teaching, research and extension, contributing to the formation of citizens and for the development of the Amazon.

Un poco de la historia

The history of Ufam begins in January 17, 1909, with the foundation of Escola Universitária Livre de Manaus integrated by Sciences and Letter School, Law and Social Sciences School, Medicine, Pharmacy, Dentistry and Midwife course.

At October 22, 1913, the Escola changed its name to Universidade de Manaus, remaining so until 1926. With the fall of economic rubber cycle, the city got empty and the population experienced a long time period of uncertainty and needs. And so, at 1926 the Universidade stopped its activities, remaining of it only some isolated unities. Only the Law course remained, being maintained by Federal Government from 1949.

At June 12, 1962, was created the Fundação Universidade do Amazonas, through the Federal Law of number 4069-A, of authorship of Senator Arthur Virgílio Filho. However, it was only at January 17, 1965, its installation was opened, in memory of former Escola Universitária Livre de Manaus. For 37 years the Universidade remained with the initials “UA”.

With the Law number 10.468, of June 20, 2002, the institution received the nomenclature of Universidade Federal do Amazonas, using from this moment the initials “Ufam”.

preservation and architecture

With 6,7 million square meters area, the Ufam University Campus is the World’s third biggest green fragment in urban area and the first in Brazil. Such astonishing forest shelters many species of Amazonian fauna (sloths, pacas, collar monkeys) and flora.

Was in the middle of all this Green area that the architecture Severiano Mário Porto was inspired to develop the architecture project of University Campus. Conceived in order to integrate both forest and Campus, the buildings were made with big green spaces between them and horizontally distributed, being connected through long interlink corridors. All the buildings were covered with a specific type of sun insulating for reduce the inner heat.

For the architecture project of University Campus Severiano Mário Porto was awarded with a mention of honor in 1987, from the Brazilian Architect Institute (IAB/RJ).Aiming to preserve the forest area, from 2010, the new facilities adopted the building concept of verticalisation.
