This Friday, all students at St Brigid’s will be involved in the Caritas Ks Water relay.

They will be raising awareness and funds for the thousands of children, women and men around the world who have to cover many kilometres each day for basic necessities like food, water, education or healthcare.

So let’s dig deep St Brigid’s and remember that the Year 4’s will be collecting gold coins throughout this week!

St Brigid’s Parish 2017 Sacramental Program

Parent Meetings have been held for the above. If you were unaware of these dates or were unable to attend, please contact the Parish Office for further information regards registration.

If your child was involved in the 2016 Sacramental Preparation Program for Confirmation, this year they can prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist.

The first preparation day for First Eucharist is on 21 May 2017. The morning will begin by attending Mass at 8.30am at St Brigid’s church. Following this, there will be a brief parent meeting and the first Preparation Session.

For your child/children to be involved, please contact the Parish Office as registration forms and payment need to be returned no later than Friday, April 21 2017.

Father Isidore will also be able to speak to you about the “Passport” which requires a signature on attendance at 10 Masses before the First Holy Communion Mass. The dates for these, with a choice of 2 Mass times are Saturday 17 June 6.00pm or Sunday 18 June 8.30am.

You are welcome to contact myself during school hours, or the Parish Office with any further enquiries on 5596 2632. Please note OFFICE HOURS are Tuesday and Thursday – 9.00am to 3.30pm.

LIBRARY NEWS

Reading Tip - Comprehension

How can we help our children gain comprehension?

We can teach them the comprehension strategy: monitoring because good readers stop frequently to check for understanding. You can help your child with this strategy at home. When reading a story stop 3 or 4 times and ask the following questions.

“Let’s see if we remember what was just read.”

Who did you just read about?

What just happened?

Do you understand what was read?

What can you do if you don’t remember?

(Re-read the page to find the information.)

If the book is non-fiction, “What did we learn?”

THANK YOU for your Scholastic Book Orders

Thank you to all the students and families who purchased books through scholastic. Each order contributes points to our school library, were able to order two new sets of books, Whatever After (ages 8+) and Horrible Geography full of interesting facts on weather. We look forward to putting these books on the ‘Hot New Reads’ Trolley at the front of the library.

Thank you also to these Mums for covering new take home readers: Sandra Damon, Jo Takeno, Vicki Vecanski, Sarah Donaldson, Reagan McGuigan, Tanya Izatt and Karen Jongbloed. Your assistance with this massive task of covering books is most appreciated.

App of the week

Block Hexa Puzzle, this is a free app with multiple levels of difficulty. Puzzles are important in shape recognition and problem solving.

However an added benefit of working with real floor puzzles is fine motor skills practice. Getting our children to complete small tasks such as puzzles, using scissors, threading beads and using tongs and tweezers to pick up objects helps in strengthening hand muscles for writing.

#App of the week is to encourage use of technology, however there should always be a balance between technology and hands on or physical activity.

OFFICE NEWS

Student Absences

We ask that all student absences now be reported via the Parent Portal. You will notice there is an icon dedicated to "reporting student absences". This is a more convenient method and can be done from any device. We no longer have an absence line on the phone.

Page 8: Welcome to Week 8. Remember to keep up to date with what's … NO 201708 - 14 … · attendance at 10 Masses before the First Holy Communion Mass. The dates for these, with a choice

Please report absences before 9am so we can then inform parents of any unexplained absences promptly.

Cash payments

Just a friendly reminder that we are a cashless office, therefore any cash payments made to the office must contain the correct money as we are unable to provide change.

Parent Portal Tip

It is so easy to be kept up to date with our Parent Portal when you make use of the "Alert Me" feature under the Class Information tab. Once you select Alert me, you have a choice of how you will be alerted, either by text or email, when a new post for your child's class is uploaded to the portal. You will see the Alert Me icon in the bottom left hand corner of the page once you open up Class Information. An example is pictured below. As soon as new information is posted by their teacher, you will be alerted and therefore always kept up to date with what's happening in your child's class. Give it a go!
