- In 1969, Don and Doris Fisher opened the first GAP store on Ocean Avenue, San Francisco
-Introdued their brand as “the generation gap” appealing to all generations
-In 1976, GAP Inc. goes public, offering 1.2 million shares of stock
-In 1977, GAP Inc. establishes non profit charitable organization GAP Foundation
-In 1983, GAP becomes a parent company after acquiring Banana Republic
-In 1987, GAP opened its first GAP kids in San Mateo, California and globally expanded to London
-In 1994, GAP created Old Navy which showcased all of the wardrobe "must-have's" at unbelievably low prices
- In 1997, GAP went digital showcasing their ecommerce website, making their brand more accessible to their con-
sumers
-In 1998, GAP wins awards for “Khaki Swing” campaign
- Khaki Swing campaign featured print ads that incorporated photos of past celebrities, such as Pablo Picasso,

HISTORY OF H&M
- In 1947, Hennes women’s clothing store opened in Västerås, Sweden. Store was called Hennes.
- In 1952, store opened in Stockholm
-In 1964, first store to open outside Sweden opened in Norway
- In 1968, founder Erling Persson buys Mauritz Widforss, a hunting and fishing equipment store. Sales of men’s and
children’s clothing begin. The name is changed to Hennes & Mauritz.
- In 1974, H&M is listed on the Stockholm Stock Exchange.
- In 1977, impulsH stores focused on teenagers, are launched. Sales of cosmetics begin.
- In 1998, H&M online shopping begins.
- In 2000, The first US store opens on Fifth Avenue in New York. The same year stores open in Spain. In subsequent
years, H&M opens in more European markets.
- In 2004, H&M initiates designer collaborations starting with Karl Lagerfeld
- In 2007, the new concept store COS is launched
- In 2010, H&M becomes the world’s largest consumer of organic cotton and continues to increase its use ofsustainable materials in the following years
- In 2011, the H&M Incentive Program – a reward and recognition programme for all employees – starts.
-In 2013, H&M introduces online shopping in the US. The & Other Stories brand is launched in several European
countries. COS, Monki, Weekday and Cheap Monday also open in new markets. Weekday and Cheap Monday launches
online shopping. A global clothing collecting initiative starts in selected stores.
