Biometrics are not new, their roots have been traced backto ancient Egyptian times. The use of finger images as asecurity device started with Chinese officials using them toseal documents in the second century BC.

Biometrics authentication is theautomatic recognition of a living beingusing suitable body characteristics. Bymeasuring an individual's physicalfeatures in an authentication inquiryand comparing this data with storedbiometric reference data, the identityof a specific user is determined.

There are many different biometricfeatures that can be used forauthentication purposes these includefinger image, facial recognition, signature, iris, retina, DNA or any otherunique characteristic.

About Biometrics

The history of biometrics

Once a characteristic has been chosenthe next stage in the Biometric processis authentication.

A biometric feature is saved on to adatabase. Once the data has beenstored, a new scanning of the biometricfeature is taken. If the comparison ispositive, access to the appropriateapplication is granted.

Biometric technology is now beingused at many locations around thecountry including banks, supermarketsand now even schools and colleges areadopting this increasingly populartechnology.

Whilst the use of biometric recognitionhas been steadily growing over the lastdecade or so, these past couple of yearshave seen an explosion indevelopment, interest and vendorinvolvement, particularly in mobiledevices where they are commonly usedto verify the owner of the device beforeunlocking or making purchases.
