Garrett Kesner, Caden Schmutzler, Kiera Raymond, Madeline Tabackzka, TimCurtis and Madison Ludwig keep a close watch on the butterflies before theywere released at Weesies.

    Butterflies

    are free

    to fly

MANISTEE Creativity plays abig role in the classroom and with thestrapped budgets that exist in schoolstoday it is vital that teachers tie several les-sons into one when planning their lessons.

Kennedy Elementary School fourthgrade teacher Autumn Slawter has thattype of creativity and she proved it recentlyby working a butterfly project into a yearlong garden project at the school.

It started at the beginning of the yearwhen I decided to have a garden theme formy classroom, said Slawter, We focusedon the theme of all the flowers of tomor-row are seeds of today. By focusing onthat theme we realized as fourth graderswe are growing and working on studentgrowth and achievement through the year.

One symbol of that is we developedan outside garden, said Slawter. A lotof parent volunteers came in and plantedflowers and Weesies donated some flow-ers to us. The children were all part of the

process as they all planted together. In thespring we saw all the flowers start to blos-som.

Slawter said they also began to studyadaptations as one of their units of study. They did numerous lessons on that subjectmatter and the butterflies really tied in

with those studies.About a month and half ago Marcy

at Weesies said they would love to do abutterfly program with our school and

    Kennedy Elementary fourth grade

students study the cycle of the butterfly

What a wonderful timeof year it is. Spring has

sprung and we are no lon-ger confined to the insidesof our domains. Even themost hardiest of techno-philes cant stay lockedinside for ever, so thewarm sun is a refreshingreminder to get outside.

While gardening andlawn care are on most peo-ples minds, it is rewardingto have a beautiful yard, but so much more funwhen you have all the lat-est gadgets and tools.

From lawn aeratorshoes and wearable gar-den stools, to using yourtrusty power drill as anauger, make sure you arenot missing out on anynew gardening equipmentthat you did not know youcould not live without.

For hanging plants orcontainer gardens, I wouldrecommend some self-watering planters. Someare stackable and help youeasily start a self-water-ing vertical garden. Thesework by having waterstored in a special reser-

voir which is then suckedup by the roots from thebottom of the containerproviding a more naturalwatering for the plants. These can be purchased asready-made containers oryou can search online for

electronic watering canfrom Clean Air Gardening,L.C. Regular tap waterhas, on average, some-

where between 30 to 40percent oxygen saturation. But the brand new EnkiOxygenating Watering Canuses electrolysis to super-oxygenate the water to lev-

percent more vegetables, grow them much largerand produce more blooms

with up to 66 percent moreweight. It works, because

    HAVE A

STORY IDEA?If you have a story idea,

contact our managing editor, David L.

    Barber, at (231) 398-3113 or e-mail

    him at [email protected].

    Manistee(deservedly)

    wins accoladesfor outdoors

For those who pursuethe sporting life, Manisteereally has it all.

The fishing is some ofthe best in the world.

There are hundreds ofacres of National ForestService land to hunt deer, grouse and even bear.

Hikers, cross-countyskiers and mountain bikerswill find miles of trails thatmeander through some ofthe most beautiful land-scape in the state.

    We who live here know

this. Sportsmen and womenwho live here either part-time or year around arespoiled.

Still, its nice to get alittle recognition once andawhile.

Recently, a nationalglossy magazine has rec-ognized Michigan andManistee.

Manistee was recentlyranked 119th not just in thestate, but in America, asone of the top 200 townsfor sportsmen to live in byOutdoor Life.

If you happen to pickup a copy, which I recentlydid at The Bookstore onRiver Street, flip open topage 56. First you will seea picture of a dude who hasust landed a giant King

salmon on a fly rod. (Mybrother and I are suspiciousof whether the picture wasactually taken in Michigan, though. It may be stock art.My brother contends hesseen the picture somewherebefore and thinks it wastaken in Alaska. Just an

    FYI.)Regardless, the article

reads: Experience theabsolute best of the UpperMidwests fishing in thisLower Peninsula townon the shores of LakeMichigan. Spectacularsportfishing for Kingsalmon and huge Germanbrown trout is availablein lakes Manistee andMichigan, while legendaryriver like the Big Manistee,Little Manistee and theblue-ribbon designated

Pere Marquette hold bothof those species, as well asbrook trout, rainbows andsteelhead.

    Fabulous.Congratulations,

Manistee. You deserve allthe accolades you get.

I happen to hold a simi-lar opinion of the outdoorlife here in Manistee.

When I lived in Chicago,Id occasionally be walk-ing down Michigan Avenuewhere I worked and wentto school and imagine that

the grand street was a wideriver and that all the cabsand cars were huge trout.

Now, those things arejust a quick car trip awaywherever I am.

    A few other towns in

Michigan made the cut, too.Marquette, in the UpperPeninsula, came in 19th.Petoskey came in 71st andEscanaba 170th.

None of them were luckyenough to get a write-up,though. They were just onthe list.

So, for those of yousportsmen shaking off the

winter blahs, rememberthat you live in one of the

best places not in the state, but in the entire country.

The Click it or Ticketads theme, Seat beltenforcement zones and

you, uses humor to reminddrivers that a statewide

two-week enforcementperiod with officers on thelookout for unbelted motor-ists. The message: avoid thefine by keeping your seat

belt fastened at all times.A decade of experience

has proven that this single, focused enforcement cam-paign has led to the statesunprecedented rise in seat

Like past campaigns, this years creative efforts

The goal is to continuereducing traffic deaths bymaintaining Michigansstanding as one of the high-est belt-use states in thenation. Ten years ago, beltuse in the state was 83.5percent. In 2008 and 2009,Michigan had the high-est belt use in the nation,at 97.2 percent and 97.9percent. Last year, belt usedropped to 95.2 percent, making Michigan fifth in

they would donate a but-terfly kit and the money forPainted Lady Butterflies,

said Slawter. She also toldus we could release them attheir store.

Slawter said the stu-ents watched with greatnticipation as the projectrogressed and learneduch more than the science

omponent to the project. We connected it to stu-

ent growth and achieve-ent as we watched the

utterflies go through theirycles, said Slawter. Welso did the science portionf it. The butterflies started

s the caterpillar and thehrysalis and finally theutterfly stage.

Students then went toeesies on the big day they

lanned to release the but-erflies. However prior toeleasing them they readhe Fluttering Lady. Iteads as follows:

    The lady orange, blacknd white

All ready to take flightReady, set go, flyBut... dont forget to say

    ood-byeFluttering through day

    nd nightEverythings going to be

    ll rightRemembering the days

    f chrysalisDevouring leaves that

    ave through photosyn-hesis

This is an experience Iont forget

The Painted Lady wasy beloved pet.

Students then turnedhe butterflies loose andne by one they slowly flewo freedom. It was the end

    f a year-long project, but

one that provided addition-al learning for the students,

    who gained perspective

    from growing as studentsand people.

Slawter said that withthe tight school budgets oftoday, a project of this kind

wouldnt have been possiblewithout the cooperationof the people at WeesiesBrothers who made it hap-pen. She said it was espe-cially fitting that they wereable to release them at thegarden center.
