RESIDENT SPOTLIGHT

TED & JUDY ALLEN

VILLAGE 5

Ted and Judy have lived in West Shore Village for 24 years, first in Vil-lage 1 and then in Vil-lage 5. They

share their lovely home with Dewey, their ten-year-old Yorkshire terrier, whom they both agree “rules the roost.” Both Ted and Judy grew up in Florida and met in high school. Ted joined the Army and when home on leave, they mar-ried and moved to Germany where they lived for two and a half years before be-ing sent to Colorado. Ted was in the Army for four years as a mechanic in the 4th Armored Division. After the Army, they moved back to Florida to live. They have one daughter, living in North Caro-lina, who they visit as frequently as they can. Judy is retired from Goodwill in the data processing area and Ted from an equipment manufacturer where he was service manager. Ted has stayed busy in retirement by doing home repairs and renovations for many of his neighbors as well as laying the wood flooring at the clubhouse. He even serves as “chef” at community cookouts. They escape the heat a month each summer and go to Canada, where Judy lived and has friends. They drive and take Dewey with them….who does not like traveling long distances in the car….the entire trip he has his head under Judy’s armpit. A soothing trip for Dewey...not quite for Judy. Ted and Judy enjoy Nascar racing and for many years attended races in Daytona Beach and Homestead. In fact, Ted has the caps and t-shirts to prove it. He has over 60 caps as memoirs - with that many it seems he should wear one every day! They also enjoy taking their pontoon, which they named “Mixed Nuts”, out at the Gulfport Marina and enjoying a lazy day on the water. Ted and Judy still feel the same way about West Shore Village as they did 24 years ago when they drove through the gate. It is a beautiful, tranquil place to live that provides them enjoyment every day. Ted currently serves the community as Vice President of the Board of Direc-tors and has been on the board a total of 10 years at different times.

MAINTENANCE Hi Everybody:

It looks like summer is here, and that means hurricane season is upon us. We have been very lucky not to have had a hurricane or flooding. There are many resources available to help you prepare for in the event of a disas-ter. Now is the time to get ready. You should always have a flashlight, radio, and some non-perishable food at all times. Also, don’t for-get medicines and pet supplies. Please take the hurricane season seriously. It is not a mat-ter of “if” we will be hit, but “when”. On another note, please note the picture above. We have received several complaints about trash and pet waste being left where it does not belong. As all of you know, dump-ing your bag of waste across the fence is not the proper way to dispose of it. This picture was taken by our tennis courts and shows waste being tossed over the fence to the other side. We have taken the time to pick up what we could find. This is actually breaking the law, disposing of animal waste improperly and littering. Please help to keep your grounds looking nice and neat. If you miss the garbage pick up, call us and we will come out and get it. Do not leave trash by the news-paper dumpster. First, that is for newspapers only, and second, animals tear up the bags and make a big mess. If you are the one dumping improperly, you will be charged la-bor time to clean up the mess. Again, this is your property. Please help us to keep it clean. If we can be of service, contact us through work orders, both paper and computer, emails or phone RPM @864-0004. Thanks,

Joe Maintenance Staff

HURRICANE SEASON

The storm season is upon us. Our website administrators are set up to assist with information in the event of a severe storm. We have staff located up North to assist. Please check your website for information as soon as we can get it on the site. Also, sign in to

the site and check to be sure your

email address is current and cor-

rect. This information can be found under User Profile located in the upper left corner of the home page. We will be sending email bulletins with up-dates. We also want to stress the impor-tance of conserving water. In actuality, our sewer costs are more than water usage. This is a huge expense for the Community, and savings on water will result in savings to all owners. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

views.blogspot.com) At CES 2011, SCHLAGE, a leading U. S. lock manufacturer, introduced an electronic combination lock known as the Link System, which can be con-trolled by your computer, iPad or iPhone. It’s a step up from their stan-dard keypad series and can be up-graded to control many other security and household devices. The Link System starter kit is designed to provide remote control locking/unlocking of your door(s) via your iPhone, iPad or computer. In addition, accessories are available allowing viewing of live video from a wireless or wired Schlage network color cam-era, controlling lighting and adjusting your thermostat with more enhance-ments in the works. All these features may be programmed to text or email alert you of who’s doing what, where and when in your home. Naturally, manual keypad door access is possible by means of 19 personalized, 4-digit codes for individuals needing regular or temporary access to your home. These codes may even be programmed for weekly specific time frames or one time use and can be reset remotely as

well. Future enhancements will include window sensors and a DVR (Digital Video Recorder) from a camera that is motion activated with the video stored for recall on the Schlage server and available, when you’re alerted, for play-back on your computer, iPhone or iPad. This system does require a dedi-cated wireless router, however, a com-puter need not be powered up to keep the system remotely operational. The locks use self-contained battery power and will work manually during power or Internet outages. Low battery indica-tions are provided on both the lock and web site, as well as text/email alerts. A key is supplied in the event of an all-out power failure. IPhone/iPad use requires the downloading of a free app. Once installed, you’ll indicate the use of a phone on the initial setup, complete the questions asked, and then be supplied a code to activate the app. When acti-vated, you’ll create a password to be used each time you wish to remotely control the Schlage Link System. The lock receives a signal causing an audi-ble five-second beep and engaging the knob used to lock/unlock the deadbolt. Once the beep stops the knob is once again freewheeling and unable to per-form this function. The Schlage Link System is well designed and con-structed. It’s perfect for rental property owners, guesthouses and condos where frequent access by non-permanent resi-dents is required. MSRP: Starter kit $299.99 – Light module $49.99 – Wireless camera $189.00 – Wired camera $49.95 – Thermostat $159.00 – Non-remote m o d e l s s t a r t i n g a t $ 1 2 9 . 0 0 GADGETEER’S RATING: 5 STARS-Bob Skidmore is a freelance writer,
