Scouts in Politics

Sunday October the 3rd saw eight Explorer Scouts (14 - 18 year olds) from Arctic Fox ESU have their voices heard at the 2010 Conservative Party Conference. The Scouts attended the "Scouts Speak Up" fringe event at Birmingham and had the opportunity to express their thoughts upon a number of topical youth issues and put questions from the floor to Tim Loughton, Minister for Children and Families. Moreover, they were able to discuss topical issues personally during a seated round table discussion with Paul Maynard the MP for Blackpool. Mixing with MP's is nothing new to Arctic Fox Explorers who recently enjoyed an evening with Nick Gibb, Minister for Schools and of course our local MP, who kindly spent an evening detailing, in an unbiased manner, how UK politics works. Mr Gibb also led a Question Time style session responding to a variety of issues raised by the Explorer Scouts. Being no strangers to Party Politics Arctic Fox have attended the Liberal Democrat & Labour Party Fringe events in previous years meeting other MP's including Vince Cable. The combination of these activities help to plant the seeds of political understanding in the minds of the youngsters and the lucky Explorers who attended the Birmingham event had earned their place by engaging Nick Gibb on political issues that concerned them personally. The Fringe event forum was the high point of a weekend that included camping, swimming, map work, crazy golf and pizza's!

The Adventure Spreads to Walberton

Young People and adults in Walberton rejoiced as the adventure of Scouting started on

Wednesday 13th October. The new Beaver Scout Colony is the first satellite section of 1

st

Barnham Scout Group, where the demand for Scouting is so high the only option was to open this new section to ensure these young people got the chance to join in the adventure.

The boys and girls, aged between 6 and 10 years, who will be invested as Beaver Scouts later this term enjoyed a packed evening of games and getting to know each other activities. The

section has an action packed few months planed including an African Drumming evening, a

Scottish themed night and the Christmas Party.

1st Barnham @ Walberton is another example of how Scouting is growing here in West Sussex. And it doesn't stop with Beavers! a Cub Pack @ Walberton is due to open in January 2011.

Congratulations and thank you to all the Leaders and Supporters at 1st Barnham, the A&L

District Team and to the County Team members who have helped make this possible.

Could your Group grow like 1st Barnham? Have you got young people queuing up to join?

Could a satellite section be the answer?

Contact Mike Wakeling or Mark Guy, via your DC to discuss your growth options.

Sharing information need not be scary....................... As the next part of the Want to Join project we need to confirm the exact numbers of young people on joining lists across the County and to do that we need Groups to share their information with the District Want to Join Coordinator. This was discussed with District Commissioners recently and it was highlighted this was controversial, some Groups are precious about their joining lists and there were concerns regarding the Data Protection Act. We understand how protective Groups are over their prospective members but we all know that some parents add their child to several lists in the hope of getting a place. So by information sharing we can ascertain the exact number of those wanting to join us in West Sussex and identify areas that need developing to offer more places to young people. On consultation with HQ on the Data Protection issue here is their answer With regards to the Data Protection Act & Groups/Districts/Counties sharing joining lists, we would say that as long as the data shared is relevant to the purpose, doesn‘t contain an excessive amount of personal data & isn‘t shared amongst too many people unnecessarily, then this is ok to do. We would advise that it‘s best to share as little personal data as possible, such as name, date of birth & contact details, & to not share this with too many people. We would advise that as few people as possible should have access to view the joining lists & that the lists don‘t get circulated unnecessarily. Taking all this into consideration John has requested we work towards Groups sharing their information by the 14th January. We thank you in advance for your support and cooperation.

Sussex 24

After the success of last year‘s event, the challenge for this year‘s Sussex 24 was clear: Could we make it even bigger and better than 2009? We‘d had good feedback from both young people and adults alike, and we had done our best to make improvements. But could we really hope to substantially grow the event? So it was, after much build-up and expectation that on 11

th

September, 286 explorer scouts and 52 leaders converged on Broadstone Warren for Sussex 24, 2010. As well as over one third of the County‘s explorer scouts being present, the numbers also included 26 young people from Electra and Spiro ESU‘s in East Sussex. The weather was a bit indifferent with almost constant drizzle, but the atmosphere was electric and there was a real buzz of anticipation as everyone crowded into the big-top for the opening ceremony at 1.30pm. At 2pm the first activity session kicked off and the explorer scouts threw themselves at a whole raft of adventurous activities including climbing, abseiling, ‗The

Cube‘ (high ropes course), grass sledging, crate stacking, coconut tree climb, pedal karts, and archery. Following a break for dinner at 5pm, where most of the Units went down the local takeaway for food, a further activity session took place between 6 and 7.30pm. One of the main attractions at Sussex 24 is the live music on the Saturday evening and this year we were in for a real treat. Two bands had been booked and first up were ‗On the Stave‘, a young, energetic band whose front-man is an

explorer scout in Griffyn ESU in East Grinstead. They had played at last year‘s event, and were equally good this year. They were fantastic, and really got the crowd going. The headline band was eagerly anticipated, having had rave reviews in the national music press as well as supporting well known bands all over the Country. ‗Jumping Ships‘ (from Brighton) didn‘t disappoint. They played with presence, power and style and really ‗brought the house down‘. They had also brought along a load of free cd‘s and some t-shirts to give away, which went down extremely well with the young people. The theme this year was ‗Pirates‘ and judging took place following the live music. The winner was dressed up as a parrot! Next up was a disco and again, all and sundry were bopping away on the dance floor.

At 11.30pm, the disco finished and it was time for the overnight activities to start! First up it was Sumo Wrestling and Gladiator Jousting, with ‗winner stays on‘. There was a constant stream of young people queuing up to have a go, and no end of thrills and spills as the explorers took some quite dramatic falls during the jousts! One of the areas that we improved on from last year was to have activities running right through the night. Following the sumo and gladiators, we set up a Sumo Olympics course. Imagine an obstacle course that you have to do whilst wearing the Sumo suit: - talk about laughter! We also had a geocaching course set up (a high-tech treasure hunt using a GPS unit), and at 3.00am we showed a couple of films in the big-top, including ‗Pirates of the Caribbean‘. Most of the explorers were determined to stay up for the full 24 hours and the majority managed it too. But Sussex 24 isn‘t just about the adventurous activities; it‘s about making friends and networking, and the young people certainly made good use of the time. Some took part in the activities through the night, some sat and chatted around camp fires, others just chilled out with their friends, but all had a really good time. Sunday‘s activities kicked off at 9.00am in glorious sunshine and the adventure continued until 12.00pm. Although tired, the explorers were soon into their stride and were busy conquering ‗The Cube‘, racing down the grass sledging runs, or battling it out on the human table football. The Event finished at 1.30pm with a brief and informal closing ceremony outside the big-top. The explorer scouts and their leaders were exhausted, but all were commenting on how much fun they had had and how much they were looking forward to doing it all again next year. Personally speaking it was extremely satisfying to see all the hard work paying off and the Event coming together. Most rewarding of all was seeing the young people having such a good time and with the best of behaviour too. I would like to thank all the explorer scout leaders who supported Sussex 24 by making sure that their Units were able to attend. Also, those leaders that helped by running the informal activities during the Event. Lastly, I would like to thank Tom Hylands, County Explorer Scout Leader, for all his help and support in running this event. Here‘s looking forward to next year. We‘re up for it: – Are you?

Tom Napper – Queens Scout Award Expedition Italy 2010

My name is Tom Napper, I am an Explorer Scout from Arundel and Littlehampton District and this summer I undertook my Queen Scout Award Expedition whilst I was on an overseas trip to Italy. Unlike my previous trip abroad with the Explorer Unit to Spain, there was no long coach journey from side of Europe to another but instead a short plane journey to Geneva followed by a brisk minibus trip to the north of Italy via the Mount Blanc tunnel. We arrived in the town of Aosta, renowned for its stunning views, Roman ruins and the accessible mountain ranges of the Alps within a close proximity. The last reason was the main one for coming to this area, to find a place that would test us for our awards but not punish us. After setting up base camp, we divided up all of the expedition gear, such as

food, pots, cookers and most essentially maps and compasses. After setting off, that was it for the next four days as we would have no real contact from those in charge unless in times of emergency. In out small groups of about six, we trekked up and down mountains of over two thousand metres and hiked across terrain that was unlike any I have experienced in Britain, all set against the backdrop of the enchanting Mont Blanc in the distance. Carrying everything that we needed to live for four days on our backs made for very intense days but looking back I see now that they were worth it. The expedition, even

though took several months to prepare for the end was gruelling but rewarding. After we completed our expeditions we had a few days of rest and relaxation to soak in the surrounding area and to recover from what we had done. We visited the town of Aosta and saw the various sites and markets that it had to offer. Within the rest of the trip we did many things such as a day trip to the fair city of Turin to take in the cultural aspects of the area such as the Mole building, the various Palaces and the world famous Cathedrals including that of St. John the Baptist where the shroud of Turin is stored. Other Days we went White water rafting in the Aostan valley and Canyoning which is a trek through the valley on foot, over the rocks and boulders and in the water. All of these were very different to anything that I had ever done before and I feel now that that area of Italy has a very special place in my heart for the time that I have spent there. Along with my personal service to my Scout troop in Britain, my new skill of Air Rifle shooting and my Sport of Rugby and the Expedition, I have now completed all sections of my Queen Scout Award and hope to be able to use this to show to people what I am capable of and use it for University applications to help me stand out from the crowd.

st Shoreham and XXXX ESU – Denmark 2010

At WS 2008 we hosted a Danish Scout Troop and in return they invited us to SEE 20:10 to take part in a joint Scout and Explorer event, to celebrate 100 years of Danish Scouting. After a year of planning and fund raising, 10 Scouts from 1

st Shoreham by Sea, 7 Explorer

Scouts from XXXX ESU and 9 leaders set off for a 2 week adventure. However due to being supplied with inappropriate minibuses on the day of departure we left 9 hours late. This meant an all night drive to Munster in Germany where, thanks to the internet and the German scout association, we had linked up with a German troop who had offered us their HQ for an overnight stop. Instead of a 7pm arrival, we arrived at 5.30am the next morning and had 2 hours sleep before the church bells next door woke us up. Undeterred we headed off again through the rest of Germany, into Denmark and to the northern town of Skive, arriving 10 hours later, just in time for a quick supper and bed. Bright and early the next morning the Scouts and Explorers were off again, this time on a 2 day sailing expedition in the nearby fjord, camping on a remote island for the night. The camp hosted over 16,000 scouts from around the world as well as Denmark. The Danish Scouts style of camping is very different from in the UK. There were no fold-up tables or benches; everything was built out of pioneering poles and planks that had been cut from a local forest a few weeks before. If you thought at WS there were some impressive works of pioneering then you would be blown away with what was built by the various sub camps out of pioneering poles; bars complete with bar stools, a castle with a spiral staircase, a church bell tower etc. The Danish seem to have a more relaxed approach to H & S as everyone wore sheath knives and were skilled in their use and thought nothing of climbing up a pioneering pole to sort out a lashing that was loose. There was no gas on the camp so everything was cooked over wood and stacks of cut timber logs were delivered daily ready to be split. No wood pile to climb over and no nails from pallets! Likewise the bases the scouts and explorers went around were very different to those at WS; trout tickling, axe throwing, wacky experiments with rockets, build your own wind generator, and hammer out your own horseshoe at a blacksmiths etc. There was even an evening game of pigs head rugby - with a real pigs head! The leaders also had their highlights of the camp from hosting a radio show for the camp to practice their Danish and meeting the Danish Prime Minister. After the camp we returned to Holstenbro where our host troop treated us to 3 days hospitality at their summer HQ (they also had a winter HQ and their own campsite!) visiting Lego land, a local historical farm and dairy farm. Our journey home was thankfully uneventful and we had time for a tour of Munster with our German host troop, and a visit to a German McDs, much to the scouts delight. Lessons learnt if you are planning a trip to Europe with your troop: Forget 17 seater minibuses, use 9 seaters to avoid having to have a taco graph and speed limiters, paperwork etc Don‘t rely on SAT NAV‘s. They don‘t recognise diversions or new built motorways in Europe! Don‘t believe the AA or RAC route maps about on how long it will take. Add another 5 hours!

An Inspired Workforce ' To inspire our colleagues to get involved’ was the objective of the Scout and Guide awareness and recruitment day held at Southern Water House on the 11

th November.

Scout and Guide volunteers who work for Southern Water set up a stand in the Durrington headquarters to showcase what they do. They were joined by Mark Guy, CRDO, and Pam Lovegrove from Girl Guiding Sussex West. As well as being encouraged to join local groups, employees were also reminded that they can use their two Community Volunteering days to help out. Employees, Simon Burgess, Nigel Smetham and Keith Hole have recently established a Scout and Guide Support Unit to encourage more staff to get involved. Work has also begun on a programme resource which leaders can use to help promote water efficiency to their section. The pack will include activities, challenges and games, which will count towards parts of badges and awards. Could you inspire your work colleagues to volunteer? Contact Mark for support in running a similar day at your place of work. Flexible volunteering opportunities for all. Join the Adventure at www.scouts.org.uk/join You may have come across this already, but the Institute of Chartered Accountants allows charities that want an accountant (or someone with an accountancy background) to advertise voluntary roles for free. The potential volunteers are all qualified finance professionals and so might be more suited to District (or County) rather than Group but the web link which allows for adverts to be placed is at: http://www.icaew.com/volunteering I'd be happy to place an advert on your behalf should you wish. Drop me a line if you'd like to know more.

West Sussex Canute’s London Weekend - 16-17th

October As part of our training for the Jamboree next year we decided that a trip up to London for the Canute unit was the way forward. Apart from getting our Scouts to have a good time and see some more of England (although unfortunately we didn‘t have the chance to meet the Queen), this was a great opportunity to get them used to following one of the leaders around; which is what we‘ll be doing on our journeys to, from and no doubt around Sweden. Here‘s the story from Ben and Georgia‘s viewpoint: On the 16

th October our unit, Canute, visited London. Coming

from all over West Sussex it was a great opportunity to meet, bond and make lasting friendships before we go to the 22

nd

World Scout Jamboree together next year. We started off at one of two train stations and met the rest of the group at London Victoria. Here we were given coloured wristbands to put us into our patrols for the weekend. The first stop on our itinerary was The National Army Museum where we had time to explore the

impressive displays of tanks, soldiers‘ uniforms, weapons and kit from battles including the First and Second World Wars. We were then treated to two talks one from a member of museum staff during which we even got to try on an authentic Uniform from WW2 and another from a ‗Friend of the Jamboree‘ who told us of his personal experiences of WW2 and of the WS Jamboree in Paris in 1947. These accounts helped bring it all to life. Next we made tracks to the London Eye. We were lucky enough to be on the Eye when the sun was setting and all the lights were going on in London. It was a sight none of us will forget; even though some were really scared as we climbed aboard.

By this time it was late in the day and our stomachs were telling us it was time for dinner. The leaders had anticipated this and we took the tube to 1

st Morden Scout Hut where we laid out our bedding whilst

one of the patrols cooked up a tasty barbeque. After our feast we got comfortable and watched ―Hancock‖ on the Projector Screen. At about one in the morning, after a lot of ―GO TO BED‖ and ―YOU‘LL BE SHATTERED TOMORROW‖ we finally settled down for a couple of hours kip. In the morning, as promised, everyone was exhausted. We slowly forced ourselves out of bed and one patrol sorted out breakfast in the kitchen. Later we made our way to the Tube station and the London Dungeons, which was quite scary, especially when they jumped out at you. Finally it was time to catch the trains home. We had an excellent time. It brought us closer together, both physically and as fellow Jamborettes. It was a great experience and we will never forget it!

County Commissioner News

As I reflect on another year of Scouting in West Sussex, I feel a sense of achievement in fact we have all achieved many things. The young members of the County have achieved by the dedication of all of our fabulous leaders providing existing programmes. Let‘s just look at the sections and the amount of Chief Scout Awards we have presented, literally hundreds and the Activity Badges even more. We have had our Queen Scouts the high achievers and we have 72 young people and their 8 leaders preparing for that trip of a lifetime participating in the World Jamboree in Sweden next year, a new District formed, new groups and sections opening, caving experiences, water activities, hill walking and International expeditions, scouting awards, weekend activities for Explorers and lets not forget the training teams presenting literally thousands of modules, all these being just a few things for all to achieve. We had Bear Grylls our Chief Scout visit the County in October a never to be forgotten experience for the young and not so young within the County. With our development programme going from strength to strength my target of 2012 more members by the year 2012 is now within our grasp. With all of this in mind I can see another fabulous year ahead with even more groups and sections opening and the possibility of another 6 Queens Scouts if not more. May I take this opportunity to thank every one of you for your continued support and wish you and indeed all of your families a Very Merry Christmas and a Peaceful New Year?

Have Fun - John

Environmental project with Beavers in Crawley

Here are some pictures of the Beavers involved with a long term community project. We have been asked by the local council to adopt that piece of land. There is no cost to the Colony except that we have to take care of it. Each time we have attended to do some work there is always a staff from Council at hand, they provide the plants as well as equipment. The young Beavers are learning quite a lot such as the various worms, slugs, weeds, how to trim, what is needed in the soil, respect for the community green patches, not to litter public spaces, and being seen by the community. This project started in 2007 quite innocently as I wanted to get the children out and about and let them just respect their environment. In 2008 we were asked to attend a celebration at the Hawth of which 6 Beavers, a parent helper and myself attended and you could imagine our delight when told, we are having a certifi-cate for tidying the patch by the road side. We have since acquired 2 trophies and 3 certificates PLUS this year it was the RHS South and South East in Bloom competition where we acquired a 2

nd category for

community involvement. On October 25

th this year we

Swimming rules consultation 12/11/2010 In January 2010 revisions to the swimming rules were launched. Following the launch feedback was received and this has been looked at by a group of interested parties, including leaders, activity leaders, swimming specialists and external parties. Various options for the future management of swimming have been explored and a consultation document developed. This document outlines a proposed approach to the management of swimming within Scouting. The aim of this consultation is to make sure we know exactly how any proposed changes will affect these activities within Scouting to ensure any changes improve the way this is offered for all. The consultation closes on 4 January 2011, so please let us have your comments and feedback by then. Comments are collected through a simple online survey. You can find the link in the consultation document, but please make sure you read the document carefully before logging your comments. Read the consultation document

Duke of Edinburgh's Award News The S.E. Region is intending to run Intro, Assessors and Supervisors courses but these will not be until the next financial year. WSCC is running Assessors courses on the 8th and 22nd Jan 2011, Supervisors courses on 8th, 11th, 22nd and 27th Jan and the Intro course on 19th March. Priority will be given to centres operating under WSCC but any spare places are available to Scout leaders. Please note that all qualifying expeditions happening from now on may only be assessed by an accredited assessor. If that is not the case the participant will not be given their Award. Details and application form are available from Nigel. We intend to hold a D of E presentation on Sunday 27th Feb. If leaders know of any participants that are nearly finished please encourage them to get their books signed off and submitted to Nigel asap so that they are able to attend the presentation. From now on all Bronze and Silver D of E expeditions, practice and qualifying, must be notified to and approved by Nigel in advance of the expedition. A notification number will be issued which must be recorded in the record book or eDofE record. Gold expeditions must be notified to the Area Panel in the usual way as well as to Nigel. Nigel is always willing to offer advice and can be contacted by email [email protected]

Owen Baker form Crawley pictured here was

jumping for joy at achieving his Gold Chief Scout Award at the recent County presentation. Owen was one of 19 young people to receive awards.

Congratulations to them all.
