WESTERLY — Stoning-ton High and Westerly High, the two most successful girls’ teams in the history of the WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament, square off in a marquee matchup Saturday night.

Stonington has won the tournament 16 times in its 30-year history. The Bears are the defending champions af-ter beating the Bulldogs 67-48 in last year’s final.

Westerly has won the title nine times.

This year’s matchup, which tips off at 8 p.m., looks like another good one. Stoning-ton opened the season with a pair of victories, defeating Fitch 52-31 and then getting past Waterford for a good

ECC-Medium road victory on Dec. 14.

The Bears are led by a strong post player and a quick, accurate shooting guard.

Six-foot-1 senior Margot Calmar, a Class M All-State selection last season, con-trols the middle. Calmar was the MVP of last year’s tourna-ment after scoring 28 points and grabbing 20 rebounds in the title game against Westerly.

Calmar, who was an All-State and State Scholar Ath-lete field hockey player in the fall, scored 45 points and grabbed 34 rebounds in two tournament games last

WESTERLY — Perhaps the boys’ field of the 31st WCCU Holiday Basketball Tournament could be re-named “The Young and the Restless.”

Westerly, Stonington, Exeter-West Greenwich and Chariho all feature starting lineups laden with under-classmen; the teams are restless to prove themselves on the varsity level after three teams posted losing records last year.

Westerly returns one starter — junior guard Jacee Hamelin — from last year’s WCCU champion squad that finished 8-14. The Bulldogs nipped Stonington 57-51 in a terrific title game that was decided in the final minute. For both Westerly and the Bears, who would go on to finish 3-17, the thrilling final before a large crowd at Federico Gym was among the highlights of both teams’ seasons.

One of this year’s young squads will emerge as the

Tickets for the 31st annual Westerly Com-munity Credit Union Holiday Basketball Tournament at Westerly High’s Federico Gym are $4 for adults and $3 for students.

Varsity and junior varsity boys’ and girls’ teams from Stonington, Westerly, Chariho and Exeter-West Greenwich will be playing, except for EWG. The Knights do not have a girls’ JV team this season.

The tickets are good for all junior varsity and varsity games played that day. All tourna-ment proceeds benefit the sports boosters of the participating schools. Since its inception in 1984 the WCCU has donated $184,760.30 to participating schools.

An all-tournament team consisting of five players and a most valuable player is selected for the varsity and junior varsity tournaments. The boys’ varsity MVP award is named for the late Mark Mitchell, who played in the tour-nament’s early years as a Stonington High player. He later coached the Stonington ju-

nior varsity. The credit union honors the late Bob Bew-

lay each year by giving a sportsmanship award to a player in the varsity boys’ competition. Be-wlay worked at the credit union for 34 years. A separate sportsmanship award is given to a player in the varsity girls’ tournament.

The tournament begins this year on Friday, Dec. 26 and concludes on Tuesday, Dec. 30. Games will not be played on Sunday, Dec. 28.

The tournament schedule is changing this year. The boys’ games will be played on the first and third days and girls on the second and fourth. It will alternate each year.

Two junior varsity games and two varsity games are played each day, except for the girls this season.

Westerly is the defending boys’ champion and Stonington won the girls’ title last season. Westerly has won the most boys’ champion-ships with 12, while Stonington has claimed the girls’ title 16 times.

season. In the first two games this

season, Calmar is averaging 19 points and 10 rebounds per game.

Junior Tatyana Lafrance Boyce provides a strong presence for the Bears at guard.

She is averaging 19.5 points per game and is the team’s second-leading re-bounder at 5.0 per contest.

Freshman guard Kate Hall also contributed in the road win at Waterford with 12 points.

Westerly is led by senior guard Maddy McLaughlin, who is averaging 15.5 points per game. McLaughlin was a second-team All-State selec-tion last season as a junior.

Senior Julianna Mor-rone is averaged 8.5 points per game and junior Emily Sulivan is putting in 8.0 per contest.

Izzy Carey is the Bull-dogs’ top inside threat at 5-11. She is averaging 10.5

points and 6.0 rebounds per game. The winner of Satur-

day’s game will play for the tournament championship on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

This is the first year the girls are playing on the sec-ond and fourth days of the tournament.

Tournament off icials made the change this year, and the girls will continue to alternate with the boys each year going forward.

Chariho vs. Exeter-WGSaturday, 6:15 p.m.

Chariho High will be looking to take the first step toward its first tournament title in more than 20 years.

The Chargers last won the championship in 1991.

Chariho lost to Division I South Kingstown by just four points in its opener.

The Chargers return a solid post player in senior Abby Cudy. She was an hon-orable-mention All-State se-lection last season when she averaged 13.9 points and 14.3 rebounds per game in Divi-

sion I.She had 18 points and 14

rebounds in the opener. Her younger sister, Ka-

tie Cuddy, controls the ball for the Chargers at guard. She scored 14 points in the opener.

She was a third-team All-State soccer player in the fall.

Exeter-West Greenwich, which won the tournament in 2012, now plays in Divi-sion II-South with Chariho.

The Scarlet Knights, which had one of the top public school programs in the state for a number of years, struggled last season.

EWG finished 3-15 in Divi-sion I-South last season.

This year EWG only has enough players for a varsity team. Chariho’s junior var-sity will automatically ad-vance to the championship game in the junior varsity portion of the tournament because it does not have a first-round opponent.

GirlsFrom Page 2

champ, hoping to use the tournament as a springboard to its divisional schedule in 2015. Westerly has won 12 titles, followed by Stoning-ton and Chariho with seven each, and EWG with four.

“The tournament pro-vides a great atmosphere with some of the largest crowds that any of us will play in front of all season, save for the playoffs,” Exeter coach Craig Main said. “For our team this year, the tour-nament gives us two mean-ingful nonleague games. I’m sure all of the teams need those to build on.”

For the first time in tour-ney history, the boys will play opening night Friday, Dec. 26. Chariho plays Ex-eter at 6:15 p.m., followed by Westerly and Stonington at 8. Chariho and Exeter’s JV teams play at 2:15 p.m., fol-lowed by Westerly and Ston-ington’s JVs at 4. The JV championship will be Dec. 29 at 4, following the JV

consolation at 2:15. The varsity championship is

Dec. 29 at 8, following the consolation game at 6:15.

Chariho returns just one starter, junior guard Jake Beauregard. But the Char-gers show the most senior contributors of any squad in the tournament field with 6-foot-4 center Jake Di-Cenzo, forward Shane Stew-art and guard Cam Richard starting early on this year. Sophomore Dom Ciringione (6-1) has led Chariho with about 10 points and 10 re-bounds a game.

EWG also returns one starter, junior swingman Connor Osberg, from a team that was 10-8 last season in Division II. Main, the Ex-eter coach, is unsure what to expect from the Knights, who opened with a blowout loss to Division I La Salle Academy.

Main listed 6-2 junior Zach Buckely, 6-1 senior Austin Coker, junior guards Trent

Walker and Scott Livsey as likely starters.

Westerly and Stoning-ton each return last year’s leading scorers and a host of newcomers to their var-sity teams. Hamelin made All-State second team last season after averaging 21.7 points game. Junior shooting guard Matt Donahue aver-aged 15.7 points for Stoning-ton as a sophomore.

For Westerly, 6-5 senior Alex Morgan, junior swing-man Marc Perry, sopho-more forward Josh Gougan and freshman guard Taber Gates have joined Hamelin in the starting lineup in early games. Perry is a transfer from Stonington, where he played mostly JV but scored 30 varsity points.

For Stonington, 6-3 Amadi White (17 per game in seven games a year ago), joins Do-nahue, senior guard Ethan Murphy and juniors Robert Froy and Bobby Atkins as starters.
