Rotary nternationa l has first Taiwan ese president

Gary Huang is a name that not everyone is familiarwith. However, from this point onward, it is a namethat people will not only remember but alsorespect. Huang was recently elected as thePresident of Rotary International for 2014 to2015, which makes him the first Taiwanese personchosen for this position. He will lead Rotarymembers from 168 countries and be in charge ofover 34,000 global Rotary events starting fromthis year.

Huang, who is 70 years old, was the President ofShin Kong Security, Royal Host Taiwan and TaiwanPelican Express Co. Even with all this businessexperience, for Huang, the part of his career that

he is most proud of is what he has done for andwith Rotary International.

No one is born to have the ambition or vision tojoin Rotary, Huang joked. For me, people'ssuccess cannot be solely determined by how muchmoney they can make or how important their jobsare. It is about how much they do for the society orfor the nation.

When Huang was 31 years old, he applied to joinRotary International for the first time, but hisapplication was turned down because he was too

young. He applied on two more occasions butRotary still gave him the same answers.Huangspent nine months actively participating in Rotaryevents, which eventually led to the opportunity forhim to join.

WHY THE ROTARY YEAR BEGINS JULYoard of Directors Meeting held

Published by President PHF Deepak Somarajan, Edited by MPHF and Associate Editor PHF Arjun,on behalf of the Rotary Club of Quilon West End. For private and restricted circulation only. Printed at Don Bosco,Kollam

Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The international convention initially played a keyrole in determining the start date of our fiscal andadministrative year.

Rotary's first fiscal year began the day after thefirst convention ended, on 18 August 1910. The1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911convention on 21 August.

At its August 1912 meeting, the Board of Directorsordered an audit of the International Associationof Rotary Clubs' finances. The auditorsrecommended that the organization end its fiscal

year on 30 June to give the secretary and treasurer

time to prepare a financial statement for theconvention and board, and determine the propernumber of club delegates to the convention.

The executive committee concurred, and at itsApril 1913 meeting, designated 30 June as the endof the fiscal year. This also allowed for changes tothe schedule for reporting club membership andpayments. Even The Rotarian changed its volumenumbering system to correspond to the fiscal year(beginning with vol. 5, July 1914).

The term "Rotary year" has been used to signifyRotary's annual administrative period since atleast 1913. An article in The Rotarian that Julynoted, "The Rotary year that is rapidly drawing to aclose has been signalized by several highlysuccessful joint meetings of Clubs that are sosituated as to assemble together easily andconveniently.

Since the executive committee's decision in 1913,the end of the Rotary year has remained 30 June.

Varkey Jacob, the two other Chairmen who wereabsent, presented reports on Membership andPublic Relations.

Earlier, the Club bulletin was released by PresidentElect Dr Saji. Before the conclusion of the ClubAssembly, a few members- Charter PresidentSaravana Shekar and Editor YS Prakashspoke, making an evaluation of the Installationprogramme. After the proposal of vote of thanksby Secretary Rtn S.Muraleedharan, the Assemblywas adjourned for dinner.
