THE GREAT WSAFC BOOT SWAPSUNDAY 13 MARCH 2016

(CLUB OPEN DAY)

BEFORE THE KICK-OFF TO THE 2016

SEASON, WE ARE ORGANISING A

COLLECTION OF SECOND-HAND BOOTS IN

GOOD CONDITION, TO BE GIFTED TO KIDS

WHO NEED A BIGGER PAIR OF BOOTS FOR

THE NEW SEASON.How it works:

Upstairs in the clubhouse, you will find a boot collection box. Bring in your old boots (tied together by the laces) in a bag marked with the size. Drop them into the collection box.

During the Club Open Day on Sunday 13 March you are invited to come along and select a pair of boots that will fit you/your child for the 2016 season. You can make a voluntary $5 donation if you take a pair of boots.

Strictly one pair of boots per individual.

The idea is to be able to pass on your old boots to others when they become too small, and in turn, you get to take a bigger pair for free. However, the offer of a free pair of boots is open to all families, whether you have an old pair to donate or not.

Likewise, please feel free to donate old boots even if you do not want a pair in return.

Any surplus boots will be donated to a club who needs them.

After a relaxing and enjoyable festive season, I suspect, like myself, a number of club members may be a little short of fitness. However following the recent health scare with two stalwarts of the club, Geoff Brogan and Stephen Lowe, I encourage everyone to be sensible when starting pre-season training. Fortunately, both Geoff and Lowe are well on the road to recovering and l suspect it won’t be too long before we see both their faces back at the club.

Thanks to the prompt response by club members and the club’s earlier investment in a defibrillator, we had a positive outcome. The incident did however work as a good reminder of the importance of knowing CPR and first aid in general. To help build awareness and competence in first aid the club will be looking to support training in first aid. No confirmed training just yet but keep an ear out for future announcements and take advantage of the training opportunity before you need to put it into practice.

For those teams looking to register early, the online registration is now open

https://reg.sportingpulse.com/v6/regoform.cgi?formID=55013&aID=7674

and fees confirmed at $260 per senior player. Teams must have a minimum of 16 registered players meaning a team fee of $4160. Further details around registration will be provided to team managers when they meet shortly. Registration fees must be paid by 31 March 2016. If you’re aware of any new senior teams interested in joining Western Springs please put them in contact with any of the senior committee members.

To help with pre-season preparation, we are planning on running an internal tournament for our senior teams. Once a date has been confirmed, we will let your managers know.Best wishes and good health.

A NOTE FROM TH E J U N IOR CHAI R MAN

The 2016 football season is upon us and on behalf of the team here at Western Springs I’d like to welcome our juniors and youths along with their parents, grandparents, caregivers, supporters and friends to the club.

Pre-season is well underway and it has been great to see the talent and enthusiasm at trials and I anticipate some challenges ahead for Neil and his advisers in selecting our development teams. The real excitement starts building in early March as we see the teams begin training as they build towards the season starting on the first weekend of April. There is nothing quite like seeing the green and white playing the game the Springs way.

“We want to be known as everyone else’s second favourite club” – Neil Emblen

Every opposition team we play will have their club as their favourite, we want their experience against us to make Western Springs their second favourite club. This saying epitomises the way we approach everything at Western Springs AFC. In everything we do we set out to deliver the best possible footballing experience for our players, parents, supporters and the opposition – the Springs way.

I look forward to seeing you at the club over the season.

Hi Everyone .

We are well into our training now with five sessions under our belts. The overall standard is high and fitness levels seem good considering we have just had our festive season.

Numbers are huge at present with lots of trialist players and because we are training as a big group with 17s,19s Reserves and First Team at present. The squad is very young and all players under this umbrella are in my thoughts when it comes to selecting teams for the pre- season games listed below.

We are so lucky to have the turf and it enables us to have so many fixtures pre-season and I hope we hit the ground running come the opening NRFL fixture on 28 March .

With this amount of quality of players I will certainly be having some selection headaches.

Will keep you posted of our progress and results in the next newsletter .

Happy 2016 everyone.

Neil

CPR AND FIRST AIDDuring January we had a couple of our club stalwarts have a couple of scary episodes with their hearts and we are pleased to hear they are both doing so well. It is a reminder to everybody that we should not take our health for granted and to ensure we get regular medical checks as we get a little older.

Well done to Doug and everybody who was involved with Geoff’s resuscitation. By all accounts you remained calm in what can be a very daunting situation. Ensuring you get trained in CPR and First Aid means that if you are ever in that situation you may be better prepared to help out when needed.

If someone is unconscious and not breathing normally you should immediately call for the ambulance and then start providing CPR to the heart to keep the oxygen rich blood moving to the brain. If there is a defibrillator nearby send someone to get it while you continue your compressions. A rate of 30 compressions to 2 breaths (30 to 2 no matter who) is what is currently recommended. The sooner you can put the AED (defibrillator) on the person and turn it on so it can check the hearts rhythm and advise if a shock is needed the better. These machines are designed to be ‘idiot proof’ and will give you clear instructions on what to do. The acronym DRSABCD (doctors ABCD) helps to remind you of the order to do things.

DANGER – Check you and the people around you are safe

RESPONSIVENESS – Is the person responsive to voice, touch

SEND FOR HELP – call an ambulance or get someone to do so

AIRWAY – check the airway

BREATHING – is it normal or / abnormal

CIRCULATION – check pulse and start compressions at rate 30 compressions: 2 breaths

DEFRIBRILLATOR – attach and follow the instructions

Continue CRP until the ambulance arrives and medical staff take over.

It is great to be back in training again with both Men’s and Women’s teams and U17’s starting last week. The season now does not seem that far away! BTYF are pleased to announce that Aleshia has joined the BTYF Physio team and is now working with the Women’s teams and our Men’s U17 team. Aleshia has experience working with sports teams throughout her study by getting involved in tournaments and working with teams through their seasons under supervision. She has worked with a variety of codes and teams include, Orewa College 2nd XV, Eastern Suburbs Men’s Football Team, Claudelands Rovers Men’s Football Team, Waikato U18 Boys Touch, Waikato Open Mixed Touch and Hamilton Girls High School Touch Team.

Matt will be leaving us in March and we wish him all the best as he opens up his own clinic at Ellerslie FC and he will be providing physio with Onehunga Mangere this year too.

LUCKY STARNow that I am convalescing at home and ‘out of the woods’ so to speak it has given me a chance to process the past three weeks and the whirlwind rollercoaster ride that started with my collapse due to cardiac arrest on the field the night of Wednesday 20 January and give you all an update. I was feeling absolutely fine leading up to the collapse. I had none of the usual symptoms; shortness of breath, chest pain, numbness etc. It was just like any other Wed night of footy… except we were getting hammered on the scoresheet.. That WASN’T normal. This was when I suddenly collapsed. Luckily for me I had the best support team there who were very quick to respond as they realised this wasn’t just any fall. They were at my side in a matter of seconds and commenced CPR without as much as a word. Doug Robinson, Landon Pearce and Rees worked on me continuously until the defribillator was fetched and without this I would definitely have been just another statistic. I owe my life to the people responsible for the purchase and installation of that AED. That is plain and simple. But I also owe my life to the team of people who worked on me and that includes an off duty nurse, Sarah Lavell who was watching her partner play on the neighbouring field. Together they performed a miracle and in my mind they are all legends! By the time the St John’s ambulance arrived I had been revived and I could remember everything up to the collapse. The St John’s team said that it was the best community response that they had ever seen! That is saying something. Once I was at the hospital I was quickly assessed and after an angiogram it was decided that my heart required by pass surgery, not stents as there was too much blockage in the arteries, one being 100% blocked. I was put on the list and waited my turn. While my chest felt like a herd of elephants had stampeded over it from the CPR, I had no broken ribs. The industrial grade blood thinning they had given me was too dangerous to operate with until it had passed through my system so I had to wait five days for it to pass through my system. On the Tuesday nearly a week after the initial collapse I was in theatre and had a 5-way bypass operation. It was a success. I waited in ICU for a day, post op well i regained my strength. After that i was put back on the cardio ward where I had the mandatory 5 days of observation. There I bumped into my other team mate Stephen Lowe. Convalescing from his own open heart surgery. I have to say that the care we received while at Auckland Hospital was world class. The nurses, surgeons and anaesthetists are absolutely first rate! Although the food is grim, everything else is absolutely brilliant. Because of my fitness, health and relative youth

I flew through the 5 days and was released to go home over the long weekend. So now I am resting up at home and plotting my pathway back to fitness which will be slow. No driving for four weeks. No hills or stairs. Lots of Nana naps and lots of TLC. Today I went to Mission Bay and walked along the sand just happy to be able to feel the sand between my toes. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who sent me cards and flowers. The hundreds of texts and emails pour into my inbox, wishing me a speedy recovery. I was completely blown away by the sheer swell of support from everyone I know and some I don’t. Thank you for your thoughts. To the people who have donated money towards a new AED I also thank you from the bottom of my heart. We have enough money now for two and the account continues to grow. Matt Munford will give an update on where this money will be spent sometime in the near future but if you haven’t donated anything and feel you would like to, the account is as follows. ASB 12 3020 0504971 00

I hope to see you all down at the club sometime soon. I’ll be the one walking a bit slower than usual... The one taking baby steps

Thanks,

Geoff.

Mid-game drama: Footballer’s life saved Action ground to a halt at Seddon Fields in Western Springs, Auckland, when an otherwise fit football player collapsed mid-game and went into cardiac arrest.

Fortunately for Geoff Brogan the quick actions of his fellow club mates and a handy defibrillator on site have saved his life.

Fellow club members Douglas Robinson and Dr Rees Tapsell, a local policeman and an unnamed young nurse were all credited for his survival, working together to perform CPR for a good quarter of an hour before the ambulance arrived.

Dr Tapsell, a psychiatrist, was on field with his team mate when he saw Mr Brogan go down and quickly realised it was more than just a minor injury.

“It was relatively clear he was having a hypoxic seizure [a seizure caused by lack of oxygen to the brain].”

He said it was amazing to see how quickly everyone jumped into action.

Dr Tapsell began mouth to mouth, while Mr Robinson commenced chest compressions.

When Mr Robinson tired, the young policeman stepped in, while the nurse coordinated the action and others cleared the crowd, called 111 and opened the gates to the field for the ambulance to pass through.

An eye-witness, who didn’t want to be named, said there was a “deathly silence” across the fields as everyone looked on.

Dr Tapsell believed his fellow teammate stopped breathing and went into cardiac arrest twice. By the second attack a defibrillator was on hand to give Mr Brogan’s heart the necessary shock.

However, Dr Tapsell was quick to brush away any credit for his actions.

“I’m a doctor...but these two guys aren’t health professionals, they learnt to do CPR in the workplace and just jumped in and did their thing.”

Mr Robinson was equally reluctant to accept any praise for saving Mr Brogan’s life, saying he was just one of a team who stepped up as needed.

“I just had tunnel vision, I was just concentrating on what was happening,” he said. “But I knew we were doing our best to help him.”

Mr Robinson said fortunately his job, at Ports of Auckland, had regularly given them a “fantastic first aid course” but this was the first time he’d had to put it to use.

The Heart Foundation’s medical director Dr Gerry Devlin said the incident highlighted the importance of a prompt response by those trained in CPR and easy access to a defibrillator.

“Defibrillators save lives, there’s no two ways about it,” he said. “I would encourage all New Zealander’s to learn CPR and do a refresher course very few years.”

Dr Tapsell also urged football clubs to have defibrillators readily available and to encourage members to learn CPR.

“It’s the difference between someone living and dying.”

Mr Brogan and his wife weren’t able to be reached for comment today but fellow teammates reported he was doing well and was receiving appropriate medical treatment.

Who for?

Whether you can play tennis or just want to have a go. This one is for adults, 20 years plus.

The Pompallier Tennis facilities:

5 all-weather tennis courts with floodlights. Men’s and women’s changing rooms with showers.

Clubhouse with kitchen, BBQ, TV, stereo & bar. Bar closes at 10pm.

Bar prices are ($5 beers, $6 glass of wine, bottle of wine $25, soft drinks $3, chips $3).

There will be an Evergreens BBQ available, to buy nibbles.

What do I bring and wear?

Tennis balls and racquets: Balls included. Demo rackets available for hire at $5 per racquet.

Clothing: Footwear: Tennis shoes strongly preferred,

otherwise strictly “clear”, non-black, flat sole track shoes. –No comply…no play

www.wsafc.org.nz February 2016 21

Competition format:

The tournament manager will decide on the competition format option:

A. Love/Hate doubles. Knock out competition. Men and woman separate competitions.

Then the two best guys/women play-off in a mixed doubles semi and final.

This comes with consolation & plate draws for losers,

so the least achievers still get the same amount of tennis as the better players.

B. Round-robin competition where the top four & bottom four playoff in separate finals. Everyone plays with a different partner each round.

In this event two “learner” guys might play two good women.

What do I need?

The event is subject to a minimum of 20 players participating and limited to a maximum of 40 players.

Ideally 40, as we will have one group on, one group off, with 5 courts.

If this isn’t possible, we need to get an even number of competitors above i.e. 22, 24, 26 and so on.

Programme:

Meet 1.30pm

Play 2pm – 4pm

Drinks and nibbles 4pm – 6pm

Any cost and how do I register?

Participation player fee: $25 each

Evergreens Club registered members reduced to: $20 each

Fees will be returned in full if it’s not adequately subscribed to.

You will receive an email 7 days beforehand with confirmation that the event “is all go”.

But what if it’s raining on the day?

All participants will receive an email advice by 10am if it’s raining, advising whether its cancelled or not.

There is no alternative (rain) day arranged.

Pompallier Tennis Club offer:

The tennis club will organise special membership prices if anyone is interested in joining as a member.
